I did some creepy sleuthing by comparing the set from this weeks UPF to how it looks in this video.. and it is identical apart from the Call Zobek sign being obfuscated by the silver decoration behind Brads head.. and the Hentai hat is slightly crooked.

Inconclusive.. but it's safe to say this was pre-recorded.

@brad is right! I always thought it was digital video disc so i looked it up.

It's always fun to listen to the crew talk about video game history. I've been rewatching Metal Gear Scanlon's & I'm currently in the final episode of 2. Man, I wish one day I could have my MGS2 - moment.

I still remember the first time I saw that MGS2 trailer off of Gamespot.com - it was definitely a video recording off that big screen in front of Konami's booth, and of course it was in an awesome Realplayer format.

Then of course when they finally got a sourced version of the trailer, I watched it an endless amount of times.

I agree with Jeff, in that, I think 2 is my favourite. Solid: One & Two are just such bangers.

One thing I always liked about Kojima and his directing (among many things) is that he will have this very serious story front and center, but then he's not too precious with it to show the main character in a bunch of goofball situations. I don't think anyone else is ever willing to have like Master Chief slip on a banana peel or something like that.

I know it probably isn't, but on first glance I thought this was Geoff Keighley and I want it to be so badly.

I remember renting ZOE from a blockbuster just so I could play the MGS2 demo. So yeah, I'm pretty sure that's how it went down. Like Brad said, it was a big fucking deal.

Now we're all mouth agape because Norman Reedus is pissing on some mushrooms.

@humanity: If Kojima directed a Halo game the master chief would have a ten minute long conversation with cortana about how the covenant's hyper militant society mirrors old earth's flawed governments and how it will only end poorly for them. Then the following scene he will be chased through the decks of a covenant warship wearing only his helmet due to a suit malfunction while cortana is making quips about how "enhance" Spartans are compared to baseline humans.

It practically writes itself.

Seeing the MGS2 trailer again reminded me of what I think my biggest issue with MGS5 was

I loved MGS2 and I was one of the folk who didn't really care about playing as Raiden (mother fucker has a sword). But the changeover just left a nasty taste in my mouth because you don't get to escape the tanker. And later you see Snake fucking off to do whatever he wants and just KNOW it is cooler than anything you're doing.

At the time I am not sure if I truly understood that. But MGS5 did the exact same shit. The most egregious of which was the end of Ground Zeroes/The Demo (which has a lot in common with The Tanker when you think about it...). You just rescued Chico and Paz and are back at Mother Base. But now it is under attack. And you get to watch as cutscene snake is unloading on every enemy that comes near him and holding the line. And it is just frustrating because there is absolutely nothing about that sequence that can't be done in-game and Snake isn't even doing anything particularly special. It is just a "random" occasion for Kojima to feel like he is directing a movie.

That was a great Game Tapes. Funny and informative.

Keighley would have been working on Electric Playground, and Victor Lucas was there without a camera. It's not out of the realm of possibility.

1) another great "Game that was packed in with demo of hotly anticipated game" - Dragon Quest VIII came with the demo for Final Fantasy XII.

2) As someone who has been studying Japanese for over half a decade and considers his skills to be decent, that one American guy's Japanese was fine. He stumbled and stuttered a bit on the second sentence (he seemed out of breath and distracted), but the Japanese was totally comprehensible. The later Japanese folks interviewed also had subtitles, so Jeff's assumption is off the mark. Maybe seeing that dude's attempt caused Jeff to have flashbacks to that one bozo at E3 who tried to ask Shigeru Miyamoto a question in Japanese. Also, for those who wanted a translation of what the dude said: "The MGS2 video was just as amazing as I had expected. There's no other game in the world like MGS2."

Both statements still true today I think. I would have thought MGSV would have become Jeff's favorite MGS though.
