the proportions on Mr. Satan's face are one of those things that start to freak you out if you focus on it for too long

To confirm for Dan, those Vegeta flashbacks are indeed redone in the Buu arc style, if you go back to the beginning you'll see the style is far more in line with orignal DB.

And just as I was writing this they're saying how Vegeta just started a family in an effort to surpass Goku which is really not what they're going for there...

We are close to the end

Vegeta's monologue while Goku is fighting Buu is probably the best part of the entire Buu saga.

Man, Toriyama was pull on pulling this story out of his ass at this point. No mention of the fact that a revived Gohan could utterly destroy Buu without the need for a Spirit Bomb. Going back to the Buu saga again has been rough.

It's a character/thing from original Dragon Ball is the answer 95% of the time for any unexplained random thing for anything made after the original series.

Great episode to cover some great episodes, it's bittersweet to see ASG about to finally close out the Z series, but I hope they enjoyed it, and I hope they enjoyed it enough to continue exploring Dragon Ball or do other series, y'know, considering now that they're anime experts and all.

Super has its ups and downs; some bad filler, couple of boring arcs, mishandling of certain characters and some pretty mediocre art (at first), but I think it's definitely worth it overall. Plus a lot of it ties into DBFZ, which you gotta check back in on at some point I think.

The whole Namek dragon ball's rule change where they can revive more than one person is indeed very convenient, but considering that their whole planet and people got massacred at some point, IT MAKES SOME SENSE that they would revise the rules.

I feel like, once you guys are fully caught up on the state of Dragonball, you guys should go back and finish Fighterz since that was the game that inspired this whole greatness. 21 is a fun character, and there's loads of fanservice now that you all will get the reference on.

If they're going to go into Super, I feel they should go with the movies and then pick up the anime after that. As far as I know, it should be a mostly smooth transition? I tried watching the first 20ish or so episodes and couldn't stand how ugly and poorly paced everything was. It's just an inferior version of the Super movies in almost every way imaginable.

As far as what to watch next, There is always Dragonball evolution if you want to see the absolutely worst version of Dragonball ever. (Just be sure to follow it with it's honest trailer as a pallet cleanser) Also, Japan did a thing where most of the long running anime titles would release 1 hour movies once a year, so you can check them out if you want. Their all very non canon, but they've got a bigger animation budget so you can get better animated fights.

And more importantly there's the two movies Battle of Gods and Resurection F. DEFINITELY check these two movies out.

Someone is selling apparel with the Hatchetman logo with the hatchet replaced with a Dragonball. The internet is truly glorious.

Jeff is right, the montage has a lot of cameos by characters from the original Dragon Ball series. It was a lovely callback in the build-up to what was (at the time) supposed to be the end of the whole series.

If they do watch the original Dragon Ball, I bet they'll pop when they see some of those characters again and see why they were lovable.

This has been such a fun podcast to watch. I'm glad you both stuck through all the way to make this the best and only anime podcast ever.

Some more funny power level thoughts from Dan & Jeff:

Forgetting that Super Saiyan 1 Vegito was stronger than Super Buu (+ Ultimate Gohan, Piccolo, Kid Trunks & Goten), but Super Saiyan 3 Goku couldn't beat Kid Buu.

The great thing about the Genki Dama scene is when Gou addresses Earth and we get to see how his old friends from DragonBall are doing. It like a cherry on top after all this stuff. This is why i stress the need to watch the first show. Its fantastic and way less focused on power levels and Ki Blasts and more focused on fighting skills and jabs and kicks.

Didn't Goku fight dragon incarnations of the dragon balls in GT? They aren't all-powerful in that form, if I recall correctly.

I'd love to hear them go back to watch the original Dragonball, I watched it about halfway through Z, it was more fun than Z, and makes a lot of Z's cameos make sense.

Guess they cut the scenes of Dabura in heaven.

If not Dragon Ball, I think Jeff and Dan would appreciate Death Note. Very different, but quite a thriller

We need all systems yu yu next! If they go directly to super they will burn out! Yu Yu hakusho would be right up their alley given the similarities while keeping things fresh and is not that long of a serires too with only 112 episodes, also vegeta was their favorite character so they are gonna love chris sabat performance as Kuwabara. I mean the dark tournament / wrestlemania jokes write themselves!

As for where you guys should go from here (presumably after a break, of course), I think you guys should dive into the original DB. I'd recommend watching it in Japanese since the English dub isn't quite to the high standards of Kai and everything after it. It's not quite as bad as the Trunks special dub (or the pre-Kai DBZ dub in general), but it's still plenty awkward acting-wise and has a lot of weird and outright bad localization choices. Still, that's just my recommendation. Even if you watch the dub I think you guys will enjoy the show.

As for GT, it's not nearly as bad as people say, but it isn't really relevant anymore. It's more like a fun curiosity at this point. I recommend watching in Japanese, though, even moreso than the OG DB. The GT dub is atrocious.

After the original DB, I'd recommend Super (including the recent Broly movie). The Super dub is about as good as Kai's (with nitpicks, but I digress) and it should be wrapped up by the time you finish OG DB. Something you may have heard/will probably hear from other fans but bears repeating, though, is that if you watch the DBZ movies Battle of Gods and Resurrection F you can literally skip to Episode 28 of Super. Super retells those movies in the first 27 episodes, and it doesn't retell them particularly well. Due to poor pre-planning, that stretch has below-average animation and the episodes are absolutely bloated to hell. I highly recommend that you just watch the film versions (which also have great dubs!) and skip ahead. Anyway, I'm glad that you guys are having a good time and I hope to hear more ASG covering other DB stuff in the future!

So with regard to how powerful the dragons are, a dragon can only be as powerful as the person who created them. You already know from previous events that a dragon dies (and the balls made inert) if its creator dies, but the dragons can also be killed directly if they are attacked by someone strong enough.

I hope you do Super next to continue the Dragonball (then Brolly movie). Though that penultimate anime episode podcast would be funny.

I want them to do Super - even though it'll be rough at times - but this is a superb follow-up series suggestion. "Would Ryuk At This"? "Seeing the Light?"

By his own admission Toriyama was writing by the seat of his pants back in the Android/Cell saga, here I think it's more that in combination with burning out. By the very end you could definitely tell he had had enough of the series.

Hell no brother, in Japan the first episode of GT aired the week after Z finshed. Z ended Jan 31 1996 and GT aired right on Feb 7 the following week.

Toei had it in the works knowing that Z was finishing and changed the ending Toriyama had for the Manga so as to lead right into GT without any brakes on the anime train.

Yeah, Death Note would actually be decent for a "non-action" show. It's still Shonen Jump but different enough from the DBZ/One Piece/Naruto faire which kind of all have the same type of main character. The English dub is also quite solid for that too.

basically; Watch DB, maybe watch the Super movies that just retell events of a bunch of episodes in a better way, don't watch GT.

I highly recommend Gurren Lagann. It's one of my favorite animes of all time and I believe it is on Netflix, and there's a blu-ray set out there too. It's very concise (26 episodes, 27 counting a recap episode half way thru the show, it's neat but kind of skippable), has fantastic animation, a colorful cast of characters, fantastic fights, and all of the ridiculous hijinks that seem to really amuse Jeff and Dan, and the ways the characters up the ante over the course of the series is always a joy to watch...I won't say anymore.
I would definitely recommend the Japanese voice track for GL, but the English one is passable. Also there's a random filler episode out there (Episode 5.5 I think it is) that I don't think is on Netflix that you don't need to worry about.

I vote for going to original Dragon Ball (and listening to it dubbed) to allow time for Super to finish their dubbing.

I'm assuming neither Dan nor Jeff want to read subs if they don't have to.

And don't watch the two movies in replace of the Super episodes. The seasons are only thirteen/fourteen episodes instead of a single movie. It's not *that* much longer when each podcast is five episodes at a time. And after going through Kai with them, I feel like they'd enjoy the Super episodes and the daily life stuff.
