I've been looking forward to this game for...how many years has it been in development? A long time, anyway. PSVR + HOTAS will hopefully be a good time.

Also, the not-great game Dan was thinking of was Assault Horizon. Shattered Skies was good.

The sixth one is back compat so I'm going back through it now. It's been a long time since I've played it, but it's still great. I've only played four, five and six, and loved them all. I don't remember four though. I was eleven when that game came out and I don't think I played much of it actually. Seven is looking a lot like the previous ones, but that's not a complaint. I wasn't that excited for it to be honest, but now that I'm going through six again, it might be a game I'm getting.

I much prefer the cockpit view as it's the most immersive, but yeah it's probably the hardest since you just don't get as much view of your surroundings. Wonderful music in these games. In playing six, it reminds me of how tense and actually kind of stressful the game can get in some spots. I'm a lot better at the game than I was (mainly because I'm actually utilizing everything at my disposal), but the feeling of failure still always looms which can be kind of draining.

I haven't played Ace Combat Since Skies of Deception on PSP and I am so ready for this new one. I... I almost wish we had an Ace Combat on Switch... that'd be good. Oh no, I'm the "switch person" now... NOOOO.

I think this game looks amazing. Is it a good place to start if I’ve never played an Ace Combat game? Also, is it worth it if I’m mainly interested in singleplayer?

I was interested in this until I found out the VR part is exclusive on PS. No way I'm supporting that nonsense.

Considering how much Dan seems to hate cutscenes and story in these types of games, it only gets more staggering over time that he loves Metal Gear Solid so much. I feel like ace combat lore should be all kinds of his shit.

Hearing Dan talking about how much he enjoys the Ace Combat series makes me want a series where Vinny gets Dan to play flight combat games like TIE Fighter. I think Dan would really like TIE Fighter.

Ace Combat is missing the "creepy perv-pilot hides in women-pilots' locker room in order to whack off to seeing them in their undies" aspect that Dan loves about Metal Gear. :b

It's bugging me how missiles just awkwardly change direction when close to the target. It looks pretty silly.

The only Ace Combat game I've ever played is 4, if I remember correctly. I had it on PS2, and I remember it being a lot of fun. I just might play this one at some point.

I've never played one of those but ages ago I watched my older brother play one to completion - not sure which one it was but this was around 2000–2001 and it was on a PS1. What I remember is going to his room and watching him play these fairly standard air sim missions, and then one day I came in and he was flying some experimental looking ship through rainbow colored tunnels or something and having to make sharp 90 degree tunnel turns - it looked like the game went right off the rails into some sci-fi land.

Is that all of the Ace Combat games or did he stumble upon some weird outlier?

@humanity: Nah, experimental planes, laser weapons and giant railguns are standard fare for the series. Every game also has a trench run mission.

Good to see Vinny keeping on brand with his "checking the audio" during VR content. I was getting flashbacks to the infamous Project B.E.A.S.T. episode when they tried to rescue a Kerbal and didn't figure in angular momentum for the intercept, you can't just fire missiles at a target moving at such divergent vectors and expect them to hit.

If I want a simulation I fly DCS F-18C, when I want to have some arcade action, I play Ace Combat. It's like comparing Call of Duty to Arma. They are both good for different reasons.

Dan missing 90% of his missiles trying to shoot at stuff that was going at the complete wrong angle compared to him went from annoying to hilarious. Though I suppose a big chunk of these dogfight games once you get a lock you pretty much have won, so seeing a "lock" miss is different.

Never played one of these before, but the PSVR thing alone is making me think about trying it out. Though probably after a price drop.

Yeah, this was extremely painful to watch and even though I try not to backseat judge gameplay, that pushed me to the limit.

Also skipping cutscenes because you don't care about them is fine for your own time, but in trying to show what the game is to an audience, seems kind of against the goal of the thing.

The VR missions are remakes of Ace Combat 4 missions? Can they please just port Ace Combat 4 already? Goddamn.

I just bought the game from the PSN Store...it a good value in that the 'launch edition "($59.95) come with Ace Combat 5 : Unsung War. Seriously, you are getting TWO PS4 or XBox One games for that $60 bucks. If you have PSVR you get that mission as well. I'm not sure teh phycals game has that, so this might be for digital download buyers.

If you get the Deluxe Edition there is even more DLC like content like skins, tags, and 'iconic AC' adversary aircraft to fly. They have a "Season Pass" system in the deluxe, but I didn't keep up with the news to know what was 'seasonal' or what content to expect - Missions? Aircraft? Swimsuits?
