I haven't really watched KAI for a while and misssed these batch of episodes, but I remember back in the day, during the original series, they clearly explain that when Trunks gets buffed, he reaches a higher stage than Vegeta buff, but sacrifices speed for power, a thing that Vegeta caught on during his training in the hyperbolic time chamber. I'm guessing they don't explain it that well in KAI.

Kinda crazy but at the end of these batch

Vegeta has Super Super SaiyanJin (SSSJ)

Trunk has Hyper Super SaiyanJin (HSSJ)

These two forms where only shown "playable" on DBZ Tenkaichi 3, the game that had over 80 characters.

Edit: After listening all of this, I guess they still need to watch the fight between Trunks and Cell to get to the part where Trunks figures out his weakness and learns why Vegeta wasn't going "hyper" SSJ

Also, the puns that are hidden in each character's name is great and should be looked at when you guys finish the series.

Nah they do explain that in the next batch of episodes, and they further hammer it home with Goku and Gohan, Jeff and Dan just left this batch at the start of Trunks' fight with Cell.

I doubt Dan and Jeff will watch JoJo but one thing it has going in it's favor is that Victoria & Danika were literally the ones that got it on Crunchyroll in the first place.

G GUNDAM

it's also the right kind of stupid for both Jeff and Dan to enjoy

This is actually the one that I would push for. It has enough mix of Gundam (which Jeff has shown interest in the past) and wrestling that I think they would get a kick out of. As soon as the crunchyroll tweet goes out I'll definitely suggest that

@miceman64: Wow, really? I feel the exact opposite on all counts, at least for this scene specifically. The music in Kai sounds generic and is always mixed too quiet for my taste, especially for big moments like this, and the re-dub feels a little unnecessarily wordy. To each their own, though.

@chen_96: As a big fan of OP I'm with you on that. Its tough to watch that show from the very beginning, but it's a very important part of the story itself, so it's a must watch if you are interested. The only thing that ,as an One Piece, I can point out is the Recent movies that portrait past adventures, like Drum Kingdom or the Alabasta movie, but they still havent gone before that and thats frustrating cause the animation sticks out.

@_brojangles_: Not Trunks. He always strives to end things early.

@chen_96: I can't wait for Jeff and Dan to recieve 1000 suggestions for anime they obviously wouldn't have any interest in watching. Jeff has voiced an appreciation for 80's era anime aesthetics so he'd probably be down with any of the trashy, action-orientated OVA from that time like M.D. Geist or Cyber City Oedo 808, but you can forget about anything released in the past decade.

Yeah, honestly I think a lot of the 80/90s stuff would fit their taste better if only because I don't think either of them has the patience for anything slower paced than Dragonball Kai, and it has to have enough 'cool guys doing cool stuff' in it.

Berserk, the Ninja Scroll movie, Cowboy Bebop stuff like that.

One Punch Man is the only modern thing that comes to mind off the top of my head, as they'd appreciate that way more having seen DBZ.

Cell doesn't need to suck anyone else off because once he absorbs 17 and 18, he's already "perfect." In his world view since he's already perfect, no need to "suck off" any more.

I'm pretty bummed at how little was made of Gohan's first transformation here. Both back in my day and on my rewatch that scene really stood out to me as incredibly significant - Gohan literally tells Goku to try to kill him so that either he will transform and be useful, or if he can't transform then he'll die but that's OK because he was never going to be useful in a fight anyways. And Goku wordlessly agrees to this - he is fine with killing Gohan if he can't manage to turn SSJ at 10 years old (or however old he is there)... terrible father.

Dunno, it's important as setup for later, but it really didn't strike me as really all that significant the first time I saw it either, because it's Gohan only catching up to where everyone else already was a while ago.

I still love it when they don´t know stuff and can speculate where the story´s going. definitely the best part of this podcast for me.

I´m with Jeff on Trunks hair looking worse, and even though I like the look of the saiyan spandex armor, the characters just bulking up to ridiculous proportions in them makes for a combo that are my least favorite designs in the show.

Back to Trunks hair though. It was extra lame because his hair usually has a pretty unique look in Super Saiyan, just like Goku´s. I remember there being a time when I looked forward to what a character´s hair would look like as a Super Saiyan, only to slowly accept that having it change form was pretty rare. It seems like almost every new Saiyan design start them off with spiky hair that stands up now, so the only thing that even changes is the color. Well, that or the character in question has Goku´s identical hairstyle for one reason or another.

Totally get that, I was saying for the Final Flash scene specifically. Obviously overall Kai is a better dub and is much more watchable, but I think there are moments from the original that are much stronger and more impactful with the English music and original dub that keep it from being the fully definitive version of the show to me.

But hey, again, I fully admit most of my enjoyment of this show is nostalgia based, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I would love to hear Jeff and Dan discuss Gurren Lagann. Seems like it would be right up their alley and its short length would be a nice change of pace after Dragon Ball. It's got all the awesome fight scenes they would want along with good character growth and development.

Personally I can't stand most of the Faulconer score, but if you want to watch Kai with it's newer script, voices and acting but the old American OST some guy went through and made a fancut for the entire series using the Faulconer stuff. I can't vouch for the quality personally but people seem to like it.

Wew, they asked for anime recommendations so I can finally get it out of my system without feeling like a dick about it. Here I go:

Honestly just from listening to these podcasts it seems like Dan and Jeff are mostly into the humor and action/superpower fights part of anime. DBZ is what's called a "shounen", anime for young/teenage boys, which mostly specializes on that stuff.

Most of the common "my first anime" recommendations are probably gonna be echoed across a decent number of these posts but it feels like a lot of those take themselves a bit more seriously than DBZ, I wonder if that's a dealbreaker for them.

Still, they're frequently suggested because they're usually pretty decent or at least popular. I'm just gonna give my personal opinion on a few. Oh, and I watch everything subbed so I have no idea how good the dubs of any of these are.

Let's start off with the "Big 3", these are basically what replaced DBZ for the following generation. If you ever find yourself at a point in your life where you want to talk to random people about anime then you are already lost, so you might as well order the bluray collections of these three because it probably covers the biggest part of mainstream anime knowledge:

Naruto (shounen):

That show which got them ninjas in it and changed how 6th graders run forever. The original Naruto is a surprisingly decent anime about an orphan who just wants people to like him. Ok there's also superpowers and a power ladder to climb and winning impossible fights through friendship and pluck and all the other trappings of this genre. The fight scenes are usually pretty alright both in terms of animation quality, as well as general fight strategy beyond just "press X to power up".

There's also a "second" Naruto anime called Naturo: Shippuden. It's sort of the DBZ to Naruto's Dragonball. While the original still featured some pretty big battles, this is where we get into the whole business of rendering random percentages of the planets surface permanently uninhabitable. You could jump directly to Shippuden like you did with DBZ but I think you'd be a good deal more confused since there is way less of a clean break in Naruto.

Oh did I mention that both combined come in at like 700 episodes? Yeah, even if you guys skip the filler that seems unreasonable.

One Piece (shounen):

Consistently decent.

That isn't meant to sound bad at all. I like One Piece, I still read the manga every week and I don't think I've ever been disappointed by an arc. While I've occasionally been very cross with Naruto, the worst One Piece has ever gotten from me was probably a "Huh, that was alright". Conversely the best wasn't more than a "Ok, that was pretty good" but I don't think it needs to be much more. To me, One Piece is the fast food of anime. I'm hungry but I don't want anything difficult or special, let's just drive down to Monkey D's real quick.

It's about pirates on a planet with strange geography searching for the treasure of the biggest baddest pirate ever, hidden at the end of the strange ocean spanning the planets equator. Of course there's super powers and friendship and you get the idea, shounen is as shounen does. It probably skews a little more to the comedy side than Naruto but it still gets pretty serious at the end of its arcs. Like I said I mostly read the manga, no idea how good the animation is now.

Also it has like 850 episodes already.

Also it's only like 70% done.

Yeah, NEXT.

Bleach(shounen):

I've only ever watched like 40 episodes of this. Seemed ok? Bit edgy? Heard some not so great things through osmosis about where it ended up. I'm only bringing it up because it's one of the "Big 3" but I don't think this ever did anything that the other two didn't? I do know that this is yet another one of those anime with an episode count in the hundreds though.

Maybe some suggestions with a more reasonable watch time would be better.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann(mecha):

God I love this stupid fucking show. Do you like the part in the anime where the guy screams and gets stronger and there's cool fighting? Yes? Would you still be into it if there were giant mechs(read: metal gears)? Great, watch this. It's the biggest spiral of power-ups, the russian nesting doll of crazy transformations. Just let go of your higher brain functions and enjoy the ride.

My Hero Academia (shounen):

The anime community's current shounen sweetheart and rightly so. It just does everything well. Good characters, interesting powers, a clear defined goal for the series to work towards, it even manages to avoid some of the more annoying shounen "tropes". It is still very much a shounen though, sometimes so much so that you might find it a little cheesy if you're not into it. I love it and I'm not sorry.

It's about a world where 80% of the population has some kind of superpower, so naturally society legitimizes superheroes to combat high powered littering and light speed jaywalking. They even have superhero schools. Crazy. So obviously it's about this boy who wants to be the very best and yada yada yada and somehow I've managed to make that sound really bland and uninteresting but it's really quite good. The animation is top shelf too. It's light years beyond DBZ and one fight in particular probably stands out as one of the best fight scenes in all shounen. It's still fairly short with like 50 episodes out right now but that's only because the manga it's based on is still fairly new. Provided it holds on to popularity that show will go on for a loooooong time.

Maybe I'll get to the rest some other time and put that into a blog/forum topic because wow, this has already gotten beyond what anyone can reasonably be expected to read and I should have stopped a while ago. There is still so much left, the anime never stops.

This is what happens when you give me permission to expose my shame to you.
