Unfinished: Baldur's Gate 3 (10/13/2020)

We might be off the mark on some of the details but when it comes to taking a shot up a Worg butt our aim is unerring.

Sometimes we look at a game before it's done. When that's the case? Well... it must be Unfinished.

@madmatt213: yeah that makes sense I guess, I mean them not mentioning it since it’s not really a platform, you’re absolutely right about that.

It’s been years since I’ve played anything on pc and right now I’m just blown away. Man games look good :D and 60fps on ultra is just amazing! Fortunately I’ve got a very good internet connection and it’s been working flawless and since I’m not financially equipped to get a pc it’s the next best thing.

Tried stadia and it didn’t work well on my old machine here since that’s chrome and chrome and an iMac 2008, well... not the best thing. :D

(Sorry for rambling on btw but I’m just now realizing what I’ve been missing this whole time without a decent pc)

Thank you for taking the time to show off such a dense game. Bought it on release and think it's incredible. You guys did a great job showing it off.

Whew boy, this is super buggy but it's to be expected with Early Access. I do like the details on the characters, though.

My big gripe about the Divinity games has already been echoed here in that combat can feel like a chore and a part of that is due to the limited combat encounter stuff. Let me grind, it's an RPG. I don't want to see every fight as a puzzle to manipulate with environmental advantages.

This is a shame because I really liked the old BG and NWN games. These, however, just aren't for me.

Sixty bucks for a buggy mess you need to help them fix is some anime H-game level of ballsy. That said, I'll take any new Baldur's Gate content, but man... What a bummer. Let's hope Dark Alliance will just be a straight shot, at least.

Between watching this and reading Vinny's post in the site goings on thread, I have to say I appreciate Quick Looks that go into menu stuff in a game that will include a lot of menu-surfing. I get that you want to keep the video flowing, but I think that showing that depth (or tedium, depending on one's view) is valuable! The type of person who is really into CRPGs will see that the game has what they want; the type of person who isn't really into CRPGs will be able to determine if they like that or not. Either way, you're demonstrating that the player will spend a lot of time in menus.

Vinny, you did a great job on balancing all of the stuff to show in a CRPG.

Also, my favorite Quick Look structure involves showing the beginning of a game and then jumping ahead several hours to show what the game looks like a little bit later.

Put me down for wanting watch a Vinny/Rorie/Brad/Abby Playdate of this.

I do like Rorie, but..... but..... but.... Why does he play these games, if they are games that appear to irritate him so much. Rorie would like every game to have a game style and game set that appealed to the way he likes to game, but not every game is going to be tailor made to every individual.

I understand getting frustrated by things that are just badly implemented, but getting upset over stuff in a game that is something that is intrinsically what the game is about, well, it's just ridiculous. Rorie also uses a tone to condemn what he doesn't like in a game, that evokes disgust.

So, just because a game is not tailor made for you, plus you are not good at the game or have not taken the time to learn how to play the game, is no reason to convey complete disgust for what you find difficult in a game. This is not the fault of the game, it is just a set of mechanics and game play that does not fit with your own game style and the game is most likely a game that you probably don't have the competence to play.

Though, every one is entitled to their opinion :))

@grayfox1210: I also forgot Dark Sun, which is actually a pretty cool setting -- fantasy wasteland ravaged by magic, so everyone became psyhics instead because that's way different than magic and certainly can't go awry.

Thanks GB for the info! Really looking forward to this game when it’s fully out. The DnD thing hasn’t really been my cup of tea but you’ve convinced me to look at this again next year.

@vinny: As someone who is familiar with 3.5, but not 5E, I personally didn't mind the tour through character creation. I feel like CRPGs are a bit hard to show off, since a chunk the audience probably wants to avoid spoilers so don't want to see story, while conversely another chunk doesn't care much about combat and wants story only, then theres the gooey middle who don't know enough about CRPGs to know what they want.

Thanks for posting this. I think I will wait until a lot of the bugs are fixed and it's down to them releasing content. If they end up releasing content Episodically I am into that, but dealing with bugs and remaking characters and having to replay content not so much.

thanks for this unfinished , i never played the original games and i've only dabbled with some divinity games, this being early acess ( which i didn't realize was a thing till a month before it launched) really does look a bit too rough for me. i like the studios' work and i supported D:OS2 early but i still haven't played it and funds are tight so it looking this rough atm it'll have to wait ...which is fine cause my backlog is big and a ton comes out next month.

and as to ppl saying they wouldn't go to GB on an opinion for this type of game i think maybe they forget what type of guy vinny is ( and rorie course) and that they actually have a couple D&D tabletop videos on this site, its not out of their realm of interests :/

This looks like a really neat game but I'm gonna be that guy and say it is kinda weird seeing the Baldur's Gate name on it. Nothing about the gameplay, tone or look of this game seem very Baldur's Gate to me. I recognise Baldur's Gate 2 (and NWN) has similar successors in Pathfinder Kingmaker and Pillars of Eternity but it is weird that out of those three games the one least like Baldur's Gate is Baldur's Gate III. If I was being a reductive dickhead I could say this seems like Divinity and Dungeons and Dragons. It's weird because I actually like what this game looks like, but the title of BG seems like a bad fit.

@hayt: yeah I was really hoping the BG name would bring a darker aesthetic. It still looks colorful and highly saturated like Divinity.

Yeah no, there are certain games I would value Giant Bomb's opinion on, this is not one of them. I need people more up on their knowledge for games like this. If other people enjoy this video that's great, but I won't be clicking play.

Wish I wouldn't have clicked on reading this remarkably pointless comment. What is the point of clicking through to this page just to leave this comment? What 'knowledge' are they supposedly not up on?

"Hello! I just showed up at this party to tell you I won't be staying. And the people running it are bad party hosts. Goodbye!"

This game looks great though. Can't wait for this to come to console. Hopefully, that will happen sometime before the next general election. I imagine running a Quick Look like this is a bit daunting, what with all the systems involved. Plus the fact that, evidently from this comment section, everyone wants a QL to be a slightly different, more/less specialized thing. Downloading, and can't wait to watch.

Brad saying who plays bard is kind of hilarious. There has been a bard in every party I've ever been in and most that I've seen.

I am a massive, newish fan of the genre -- beat dozens of classic CRPGs in the last few years -- but not even having an option to play with the real-time/turn-based hybrid combat from the first two games means I physically won't be able to play the game, unfortunately, unless they choose to implement it as a choice at some point. I get super tired due to health issues if I need to click a lot.

Fingers crossed, it looks neat!

This is just my 5E-player brain going too hard, probably, but I'm wondering if that part when Vinny thought he had an extra Bonus Action but couldn't do what he wanted with it was because it wasn't a true Bonus Action, but the Level 2 Rogue Ability known as "Cunning Action."

No Caption Provided

It's not super-important, and it's just my "I wanna help with rules!" tendencies I have as a DM running rampant, but I just want to help Vinny avoid any potential future frustration or confusion.

I also could be wrong and full of shit, I haven't played BG3 yet sadly.

Edit: Looks like Larian's implementation of the Thief subclass's "Fast Hands" is what grants the second bonus action. On the table, in standard 5E rules, this just (along with Cunning Action) simply expands the options of what a Rogue can do with their Bonus Action. An interesting adaptation for the game! Cannot wait to play this.

@hayt: I'm pretty excited to try this game once it is finished, as I really loved OS2, but I agree 100%. It just looks like a Larian game with the Baldur's Gate name...which is fine, but it still feels weird that playing a game set in a completely different universe and ruleset like Pillars can feel more like BG than this looks. Maybe the end product will be different though...I'll be playing it either way.

Echoing everyone's thoughts of this looking like Original Sin 1 and 2. Not sure what I expected from Baldur's Gate 3, but it certainly wasn't Divinity Original Sin.

As someone who knows nothing about the Baldur's Gate series and very limited understanding of D&D, this quick look was super helpful. Seems interesting enough that I may try it when it finally releases.

One thing though, at the start Rorie and Vinny seemed to say that most people would find the character creation to be satisfactory (albeit missing classes because of early-access) but honestly, the inability to create a whole-ley unique character face-shape is a huge turn-off. I understand having pre-built faces helps a tonne for animation (especially with multiple races to consider) but being able to at least choose eyes, nose, jaw, cheekbones, independently really adds a lot for me (even if there are only a few preset options for each).

I also find it funny Brad mentioned how most players had been making generic human characters when my immediate thought when Vinny loaded up a save was "wow the three pre-built party members seem super generic". I know they have unique things to them (like one being a vampire) but honestly, all three of them looked like generic Dragon Age NPCs.

I've been enjoying the EA so far, though I hope they change how some of the elemental stuff works. 5th edition isn't built to have all the elemental surface stuff and damage over time that Divinity is big on, so I hope they tone that down. This gets pretty close to what I've always wanted though, which is a D&D game that actually plays like D&D, which has turn-based combat.

As for it not feeling like a Baldur's Gate game, I see at as being different in the same way 5th edition is different than 2nd edition. I'm more attached to this being a modern D&D game than a new Baldur's Gate, though, and this captures the feel of D&D pretty well for me. Maybe I just play with a particularly savage DM, but I've enjoyed the combat difficulty so far. It forces you to actually use your consumables, which I like because I always tend to hoard them otherwise.

I’m very into what this game is showing, but boy it really puts the “early” in early access. I think I’ll wait for the 1.0 release, or maybe for buzz to pick up that it’s in a much more playable state. I have enough active TTRPG campaigns that I think I can hold off for now.

Also, Bards are good now! 5e in general made a lot of changes that I heavily agree with. Very interested to see where 6e goes considering a lot of the rival game systems that have popped up. A number of Dungeon World things found their way into the expansion books in this edition.

I know Brad said that everyone is happy Larian is making this and not someone else but I personally would have been down if Obsidian did a Baldurs game which obviously isn’t an option now. I just played Original sin 1 and liked it but I preferred pillars.

What? I really don't think anyone gives a shit about whether or not you have deemed this video worthy of you watching it or not. Why be so pompous? Not everyone is a fucking scholar of all things D&D.

Damnit, this sort of thing frustrates me so much... Vinny says he's trying to burn the windmill, when there's a torch/lance on the 2nd floor he just lit... if I had any hair on my head, I'd have pulled it out. :-)
