Opening with stutter step. Looking forward to another great episode :)

Edit: The guys staring at Majima are addressed later. I'll leave it at that.

IIRC, the character switch is every two chapters until the end game.

There is fast travel (via the taxis), but it isn't really needed until later as Kamurocho/Sotenbori are fairly compact. It's a Modified Model Gun.

I'm so excited for more! I don't think I've been enjoying a series so much as this one in a while. I think I've seen most of the episodes 4 or 5 times now (and there's several great jokes I've only picked up on during repeat viewings, too). Yakuza got me hooked.

Quick Hot Tips! Try out the throw (Circle -> Circle) with Majima, it's pretty fantastic. Also you can grab people on the ground and fling them using Circle, which is a nice way to deal with enemies if you don't have much heat built up. Going great so far, though! I can't wait for you guys to get the final fighting style, too.

I never thought I would want to play this game, but I figured I would enjoy watching you guys play it. That said, the more I see of the game the more I think it is actually pretty great (the story, the world, the combat, the friendships stuff), and I think I need to play it too. I'm very close to pulling the trigger on Amazon here.

Most handguns in England are modified replica's too. They get called rebores a lot round here. I'd assume most countries where that stuff is illegal are the same. Apparently you have a pretty high chance of blowing your own fingers off with them, cos they're pretty badly made.

I guess they really couldn't figure out how to translate the bit with the little girl in a way that would work well. I assume she was using "oji-san" for Majima, which carries a connotation of certain age, while "sir" really doesn't, in my mind. I wonder if the dialogue in Japanese had "onii-san" as an option for what Majima wanted to be called. Uncle/Brother would've worked better in English, I think.

BTW, the "Tax Sato-san" option is great. Paraphrasing, it's "Sato's a common last name, right? Tax the hell out of them and you;ll get plenty of money coming in".

The taxis at the edges of the map serve as "fast travel". They're not super useful, but do come in handy every now and then if you need to get from one end of the area to another.

The thing about guns in Yakuza is that they only kill in cutscenes. Using them in fights is perfectly cool. Everybody does it. Don't worry about it.

Hold down R1 outside combat to walk slowly. It will make enemies agro less, but of course, also makes you walk slowly.

The cheaper food/healing items won't really cut it in the long run, especially as you upgrade your health. When fighting Mr. Shakedown for example, you probably want to be able to fully recharge your health several times. They sell the good stuff at the drug store, and always a good idea to keep a few handy.

The Circle button is a guard break move when you're using the bat.

(Oh, and I still haven't given up on you guys buying a mandarin orange. They had them in the convenience store when you bought Tauriner for lip-balm guy.)

Regarding the sales tax, you're (of course) missing on some background - the Japanese sales tax was indeed introduced at 3% around the time the game is set. It was raised to 5% in the late '90s, and it stayed that way until 2014, about a year before Yakuza 0 came out in Japan (and when the game was likely in development), when the Abe government raised it to 8% with plans to farther raise it to 10% by the following year. That plan's been postponed because of the economy and public outcry, though, and it should finally happen this year. This is where the 5 and 8 numbers come from in the answers.

One ill effect from the 2014 8% rise is that while before you could count on price labels to always show prices including tax, now it depends on the store - about half show it post-tax and half pre-tax, and you always have to look up the small print to find out which is it.

quick rundown of the healing items for the gbeast boys, you can find them at the drug store in either city (they're explicitly called "____ drug store" too so it should be easy enough to hunt them down) and they heal faaaaar more than mountain dew or food items!

Toughness - refills Only health

Staminan - refills health And heat

Tauriner - refills Only heat

there's a few different versions of each one, and by the end of each yakuza game Staminan Royale is probably the one you're gonna want to fill your inventory with just because of the double effect.

Some context for the Sales Tax substory, it's referencing the current state of taxes in Japan. In particular, the '3% to 5% to 8%' is a thing that happened, with 8% being the current rate in Japan as of a few years ago. I think this change happened fairly close to the game's Japanese release, which is why a few disgruntled writers probably made it into a sidequest. As a student in Japan right now, was actually a pretty funny thing to see pop up. I just like the idea that Majima's shrewd Yakuza business sense determined the future of Japan's taxes.

@alex@vinny Remember that you can't fail the substories, per se - only get worse rewards. The last time this came up you decided that you'd pick the "correct" options, unless there was a really funny one. You really should've picked the Hustle - it's great.

I managed to finish the game since the last episode, and man, I'm excited for you guys to get further in the game. Side stuff is always entertaining, but the story sure has some kick-ass moments too! Also, later on the money starts rolling in absurdly fast, so you can unlock a lot more of your skill trees.

FWIW, I personally found Kiryu's Beast style and Majima's third style (the one you guys don't have yet) to be the most useful later in the game.

This is probably my only big complaint about the game's story, lol. Too many people get shot multiple times and then are back in the next scene like nothing happened.

Just for you guys who are using Yakuza as the answer to knife vs bat. Knife totally wins, for reasons which i won't say yet.

On that note, hey you should do the knife heat move, it's really good. Knife triangle attacks are just good in general, insane amounts of damage.

Also, in terms of combat, you want to stomp on people with triangle when they're on the ground if you don't have heat as often as possible, it's a good way to do damage and charge up heat.

@danryckert@vinny@alex A quick run down of the abilities wheel. Those locks that say "Master" when you hover over them are the skills that are taught by the trainers for that particular style. In order to get them to teach you those skills, you need to buy the abilities that lead up to those skills. So for Slugger style, Boost Health (L) will allow Fei Hu to teach you that first Master skill. Also, all of the unlockable skills for Slugger style are just unique Heat Actions for the equipable weapons that you can pull out by pressing down on the d-pad. And just a reminder for who your trainers are for what style at this juncture of the game:

Bacchus - Brawler Trainer

Kamoji - Rush Trainer

Miss Tatsu - Beast Trainer (you have to take a cab to the pier in order to train with her)

Fei Hu - Slugger Trainer

Dan, look for 1970's 'library music', music made not for release but to be used in films and tv-shows. Plenty of stuff on Youtube, you should find something to walk down the streets to!

You should get a bunch of healing items (staminan xx or thoughness emperor) from the drugstore before trying to take on Mr Shakedown.

You also have so much money in this game that you should pretty much never buy food instead of medicine. You can fill your inventory with the best healing items and make back the money in a single fight against street thugs.

If I'm not mistaken, pocket tissues are popular among Japanese businesses as a method of advertisement because they're extremely cheap to produce, they're useful, and ideally, your ad will get seen every time that person goes to pull a tissue out of the pack. Oh hey, there's actually a whole Wikipedia article about it.
