Bombin' the A.M. With Scoops and the Wolf: 06/06/2014

The Wolf is having Internet problems, but that's not gonna stop me from pontificating about E3 for nearly an hour.

Grab a cup of coffee, and catch up on the day's headlines with Giant Bomb guys that aren't in San Francisco.

That's an awesome picture. Instantly has me wanting Patrick to do more Solo morning shows just so we get Han Solo pictures every single time.

Witcher, great combat? I don't know, man. The combat in Witcher 2 was something I learnt to tolerate/work around and use effectively, but never enjoyed. Admittedly, I didn't try the combat rebalance patch they put out last year.

Kudos to Patrick for having the courage to actually say something critical about Transistor's story-telling. Seems like everyone else on the Bombcast is sucking that game off for obvious reasons. I eventually understood (most) of the story but I felt completely disconnected from it. Audiologs? Blah!

The story felt like it was obtuse just for the sake of being obtuse. Not clever. I beat it once and stopped playing.

I'll be really bummed if we don't hear something about Phantom Dust. If we don't hear anything hopefully the GB crew can ask Phil about it Tuesday night!

I can only speak of the Xbox 360 version, which I do believe had the rebalance patch already in, but I quite enjoyed the combat. It took some learning, and if I got my ass kicked it was because I either didn't prepare well enough or screwed up during the fight. I wound up really liking it the more I got into it.

The first game's combat, which I have played on my laptop, was pretty much something I merely tolerated to get to the next quest or story beat, though.

@patrickklepek

Your comments on Mario Maker where fun to listen to, mainly because myself and a team created that very game you pitched year ago during the Dare to be Digital competition :D

Loading Video...

Escape from Dr Nomerac's Lair was a game where 3 players played on the TV screen in vs platforming while a 4th used a tablet to place hazards and traps in the level live :D while the final version only had set point to place traps we had a version where you could build the level while the other where playing and a version where you could place traps anywhere :D

Thought you'd like to know that your ideas are good since the game was a blast to play :D

Edit: lol the video is of a super early alpha build (lol half of the textures are missing :P)

I wonder if Patrick got the relationships between Grant and Asher or Sybill and Red in Transistor or not. Seems like something he would be in to since it explores that narrative and doesn't make a big deal at all about it.

@themasterds: You have not heard of steam, have you? I own a PS4 and honestly after playing all the big releases and the launch titles I can't find a decent new game to buy for it. On steam there is a plethora of games of every genre and they all look and play amazing, if you have a decent rig and an X360 controller. I only wish i could justify the 1000 bucks every couple of years. I preffer my PC but the new consoles are powerful enough to provide a great gaming experience. I own over 200 games on steam and I don't regret buying them, piracy is ruining PC gaming.

@dimil0c0: Buy an Xbox One and a Wii U. There are plenty of games you are missing you just need to cast a wider net. It could also be a factor of where you play games first. Yeah, if you always go PC on multiplatform games of course you're going to have more games to play there.

E3 question for you Patrick: What happened to Microsoft's cloud computing? Do you think they will have any game at all that can visually demonstrate the cloud computing in action? They played this up last year but haven't heard much about it since.

Somehow I'm not at all surprised that Patrick would feel the need to use the word "pontificating" in a video game video/podcast description.

@darkest4: "Patrick Klepicks 'Ostensibly' Is pontificated over a magnanimous amount of time, brewed lightly for the preferred profundity required for enjoyable consumption."

I joke but I love the way he talks, to be honest. I find his mannerisms relaxing, and his choice of vocabulary is something I don't hear everyday.

@iamnotbatman: True, but the issue is generally what many guest devs have said on this site. Most recently comes to mind was Rami Ismail who brought up the idea of fragmentation. It's very hard to account for and have the resources to test all cases.

I think Patrick cuts Transistor way too much slack. But I guess game bloggers have to always be using this apologetic tone. He says the game had a great "flow", but that's exactly the part I felt was disjointed and awkward.

@patrickklepek: Beyond the backdoor challenge rooms, they give you further reason to experiment with all the functions in Transistor by requiring you to use every single one as the main ability, an upgrade, and passive skill to unlock and fill out all the 3-part character bios and backstories tied to every function. It's mostly just flavor text, but there is some interesting stuff in there and gives extra incentive to try some combinations the players may not otherwise. It's all optional of course, but I know I wouldn't have found some great skill combos without that mechanic.

Or maybe people just have different opinions than you. He, in a nice way, said he didn't think the story was very good. That's not really "cutting it slack." Just because someone doesn't have the same criticisms as you that doesn't mean they are going easy on it.
