Bombin' the A.M. With Scoops & the Wolf!

Bombin' the A.M. With Scoops and the Wolf: 11/07/2014

There might be too many cooks in this show, but we do our best to talk about Advanced Warfare, Ubisoft's (now reversed) decision to remove games from Steam, and more.

Grab a cup of coffee, and catch up on the day's headlines with Giant Bomb guys that aren't in San Francisco.

Too Many Cooks has been on my mind incessantly since it first appeared. There are just an absurd amount of layers to that thing. It's Frog Fractions in television form, if you'll excuse the overused comparison (and even if you won't).

Ragging on Ubisoft in regards to their relationship with the PC community is kind of old news based on literally years old major problems.

When I launch Fallout: New Vegas (been playing that this weekend) from Steam, I launch Steam, I find the game in my list of freaking 200 games that I can't sort in any useful way, I get a window that pops up, and I have to click a button to launch the game.

When I launch Assassin's Creed: Freedom Cry (played that last week) from Steam, I launch Steam, I find the game in my list of freaking 200 games that I can't sort in any useful way, I get a window that pops up, and I click a button to launch the game.

When I launch AC: Freedom Cry from Uplay, I click the Uplay icon, I navigate to the game, and I click the button to start the game.

It's the same damn experience. (Same with Origin now too). The problems in the old days were about the number of installs/uninstalls/issues with games crashing if your internet became disconnected because of the rigidity of the early DRM attempts from Ubi. Now it launches Uplay and it authenticates that you own the game, and that stuff is all gone. It's the same as Steam, it manages the licenses that you have, and that's your DRM. If the authentication server is down, it doesn't work, same as Steam, Origin, or whatever digital authentication system you've got. My understanding is that any recent launch-period issues have been on that end (not a big surprise).

I'm not sure what other things Steam provides (I guess a friend's list? I stopped playing online multiplayer games early in the Xbox360 era because it was clear it wasn't a community for me anymore, it was for 12-year-old nazi skinheads who hated gay people and women instead).

I've also been buying most all my games through the humble store now if they're available, and I just bought Unity through the HS this morning, so it's almost certainly just some business dispute between GiantUbisoftContentFactory and GiantValveTakesAllYourMoneyCo.

I used the exact same description when convincing somebody to watch it. It's meticulously-crafted madness at its best for my money.

@uniform: As someone born in 1976, I thought the whole thing was an amazing (if somewhat askew) recreation of all that shit I grew up with. And hell yeah, I remember Falcon Crest, even if I wasn't any sort of avid viewer.

Glad I'm not the only one who's confused. I got all excited that perhaps Patrick came in as a guest spot with Alex. Oh well.
