I somehow played Chex Quest long before Doom as a child and loved it. Still love it.

I have fond memories of playing doom.wad in Chex Quest for shits and giggles.

I still dream of someone somehow making a full, AAA Chex Quest using the engine and gameplay features from DOOM '16. Hell, just sneak a Flemoid easter egg into Eternal. As far as I'm concerned, Chex Quest is DOOM canon.

Edit: Man... now I want to go and replay some of the famous/infamous shooter conversions of the day. Simpsons Doom, anyone?

I can honestly say I have fonder memories of Chex Quest than any Doom game.

I actually fired up Chex Quest a couple of months ago after not having played it since I was super young. The ending is pretty anti-climactic - I remember it being more of a thing. But nope, you just walk up to a face wall and shoot it. I thought the game was longer than it actually is as well. The song for the first level still gets stuck in my head periodically.

Well shit, I had no idea there were not one, but two sequels to Chex Quest.

I still have that AOL CD with Chex Quest.

Wow...I got this on a PC Gamer demo disc about 8-9 years ago. I don't remember playing this as a kid, though.

My computer as a kid didn't have speakers. I sat for hours silently playing Chex Quest. Good times.

Chex Quest is indeed superior to Doom. Not only did it come in a box with cereal, I like the art and music more. Ben mentioned how easy it was, and that is true but there are difficulty levels to select from at the start of the game if you want more of a challenge. Nothing quite like having to spork one of those flems in metal suits because you're out of ammo.

If the crew's looking for another (bigger budget) game from the same era to try, I recommend Outlaws, made by Lucasarts.

Damn, that green house area with the glass ceiling. All this time I just thought this ran on the vanilla Doom engine, but that kind of stuff was something they added with the engine upgrades for Hexen.

Also, the "Secret Revealed" message Ben complained about isn't actually from the game itself, but something ZDoom or whichever source port he was playing this through has added (probably along with the jumping and crouching, which wasn't possible in the original Doom, but was added with Hexen. Didn't look like these levels were actually designed with that in mind).

Yo, Ben. If for some reason you ever end up coming back for Chex Quest 2, here are some hot tips:

1. This is literally just a Doom Total Conversion. I think most if not all of the weapons are identical to how they worked in Doom. You spend a lot of time switching back to what is essentially the pistol, even as you were carrying around things like chaingun or plasma rifle (and even pulling out the low-ammo pistol even when you had tons of ammo for other guns). Granted, you weren't exactly struggling to beat this first episode, but still! Something to consider.

2. Given this is running on a more modern port of Doom, you can totally toggle the ability to be able to look up and down. It should be in the mouse settings, labeled something like "Always use Mouselook."
