@valeo:

After having put about 60 hours into Dead Cells, and.. *checks Steam* two into Rogue Legacy, I heartily concur.

I would double-sub for a Breaking Brad Dead Cells.

@humanity: Yeah rogue legacy was fun when it came out but I have a real hard time going back to it after Hollow Knight since the platforming was better in just about every way.

@homelessbird: I tried reinstalling it a few months ago and felt the same. I remember sinking dozens of hours into it when it came out, but on return, it feels so stiff and grindy. The way some projectiles come through walls and others don't and how bullet hell-y the later rooms get is such a turn-off. It gets better once you get movement runes and better stats, but grinding to make a game fun isn't how I want to spend my time now.

I was actually recently talking about Rogue Legacy with a friend, reminiscing about how great this game is. In the ridiculous mass of rogue-like games that seemingly never stop coming out, this is truly one of the best of 'em.

@bisonhero:Great list of Roguelites! Would have made the exact same one myself (although I would say Hand of Fate 2 at this point). Ones I would maybe recommend to a more hardcore fan of the genre: Wizard of Legend, Vagante, and La Mulana 2. Each deeply flawed in specific ways, but a lot of fun to be had there.

@the_nubster: yeah, it's been a long five years for this stuff! It's amazing how much innovation people have brought to this space in so little time that something I enjoyed so much at the time feels so dated now

This game is really great, but watching this makes me realize how lacking this game is in the music department compared to newer games of this type. Especially having played a load of Dead Cells recently.

I own but have never played Rogue Legacy. Should I?

I never got very far, and even I'd say yes. It's a LOT of fun, even if you're just sort of tooling around with weird "builds."

@bisonhero: I tend to agree with your Rogue Legacy assessment. However, Dead Cells is not the closest thing to Rogue Legacy - Sundered is! That I'm aware of, anyway.

This is now a public service announcement: if you're nostalgic for Rogue Legacy but less into it now than you were, you should consider trying Sundered. It's similar, better in all ways, and has a bit less grind and a bit more satisfying of a conclusion. There's even a quick look of it on this very website!

Dumping on Rogue Legacy aside, I hope they continue this Breaking Brad until they just can't stand the grinding anymore.

Literally came to see if there was a game i'd never heard of called "Alexander and Friends." I'm glad it's actually Rogue Legacy though.

Not sure I can even partially agree with the people here who think the game has not aged well - all rogue-ish games have certain thing about them that you can complain about similarly to what some people mention here, even the newer ones. So - some of the challenge chests require specific equipment or abilities to be applied to your character? That is not a flaw - if you care about getting them, then plan appropriately. If not, just ignore them. Nothing wrong with that - they dont have to be something you can attempt on ANY run no matter how you built that run's player-character. Also, the art style has not aged well? It was purposefully dated from the get-go, it is no more modern or whatever you can call a newer game using an art style inspired by the past then or now. I could go on with some of the very weird criticisms I am seeing. Basically, what really happened was that you played the shit of it then, and so from YOUR pov, it is an "old" game that you see that way. That is fine, and happens with all games, even ones where many games play the same and look roughly the same in the currently timeframe.

Also, it sort of surprises me that only one person in this comment thread in the first person besides myself to think (or at least mention) the similarities between this game and Dead Cells. If I did not know better, I would think Dead Cells was the follow up from the same developer. Waiting until Tuesday to play that game on my Xbox even though it's already installed is just so very frustrating. Guess I shall play some Rogue Legacy to pass the free gaming-time. :-P

EDIT - Also, to the person who mentioned Sundered - I dont even know how you can say that game is a closer comparison to RL than DC.

@captain_insano: Probably, but honestly in the time since this game came out there are plenty of newer games that do the roguelite/like thing a lot better in my opinion.

The key to this game is that it's actually a grind fest. Crank out some levels and any challenge becomes much easier. The character gimmick is cute, but the primary loop is continually getting stronger and going through NG+ after NG+.

@brad Hot tip, especially for Pon De Fireball boss: Attack>BackDash. You'll stay facing the same direction as your swing, while backdashing during the swing.

Makes for quick egress right after he charges, or when he's about to charge.

That was a fun BB. Rogue Legacy is a joy in its simplicity and variability in characters.

I am now about 2 hours into Rogue Legacy. I think I like it but I also think it's kinda frustrating. Presumably this might get less so in some ways as my skills develop but also more so as I get 'closer'
