Sure, they are missing out on that audience but they aren't going to force themselves to like JRPG's just for that reason. If someone doesn't like that specific type of game then just don't cover it because it just pisses off fans when they don't end up liking it.

I want genuine reactions from these guys, not them faking putting a smile on their faces while they pretend to like a JRPG just so it gets coverage.

This was, I believe, one of the main reasons Patrick got Jeff and Ryan to host 8-4s podcast because they knew that they wouldn't be able to produce enough thoughts on those types of games.

Alexa Ray over a Gamespot genuinely really likes the genre so I foresee them having her on lots of JRPG quicklooks from now on. and maybe the new hire at NY will actually like the genre. It's my number one favorite genre myself, but even I know there is a lot of bullshit in it and it's very hard to get into, I don't blame these guys at all for not liking them.

I agree with your comment in regards to not forcing them to play Jrpgs. I don't want that either and they usually end up upsetting that particular fanbase because of their disdain for them(aside from the Persona series). The 8-4 podcast is a good addition, but I'm sure if we were to do a numbers game, that podcast probably gets less views/hits per week compared to quick looks and bombcasts. That's why I believe the best course of action would be to hopefully have someone come and join the staff who not only aligns with their sense of humor but also someone who also actually enjoys Jrpgs and their quirks. I'm looking forward to the staff they bring in and the future of the site. I genuinely want to see this place improve in all ways instead of just one course.

I played Skies of Arcadia for the first time just a couple of years ago. It holds up surprisingly well, although the speed of the combat was quite slow, both for regular combat and the airship battles. As long as one don't mind that though I would recommend it still :)

@robin_smith: Unless the disc has a 60hz mode (I know at least a bunch of full PAL games of the time did, but I doubt the demo discs had the option) and the GB guys have a copy of Freeloader they won't be able to play it. Figured i'd save you the effort.

I'm betting Drew would have liked the ship battles in Skies of Arcadia. Not sure about how he'd like the rest of the game but they should have at least let him try that part when he showed interest in it.

These Demo Derbys are making me realise that games seem way more janky to me when there's no background music.

Two seconds before Dan said "Am I crazy or does this look really good?", I thought the exact same thing.

Kiss was pretty ok. Lot of garbage but the good stuff was good stuff.

This video made me a believer in Toy Commander.

I like Dan and all, but man...him being so cold to Skies of Arcadia was kinda irritating. Oh well, opinions and all that.

He's a grown man and doesn't like kid stuff etc etc

But yeah bums me out too, Skies of Arcadia was a great game shame Sega never did anything with it.

Flying around and drowning in random encounters though..

The Gamecube re-release had a significantly lowered random encounter rate, if I remember correctly. Also all the (free) DLC years before DLC was even a thing.

A lot of my digital media courses in college were taught by ex-Portal Runner developers, since the studio was right nearby. Advent Rising guys, too.

I had a demo disc that had Skies of Arcadia on it that was super long. It was at least an hour and was just the first chunk of the game. Too bad no one in this video really seemed into playing it. I guess for the sake of this series, something like that would take up too much time.

Sega really should abuse their past franchises more. Skies of Arcadia HD and Shenmue 1 & 2 HD would probably do pretty well for them after the likes of JSR HD and the PC port of Valkyria Chronicles.

I call for a UPF of the whole gang playing multiplayer Toy Commander!

Also, Jeff's mystifying memory of every game is essential in these DDs.

I like having Jeff on these now.

Totally! Jeff is a video game historian more or less so him being there for these demos of games makes for very interesting comments and facts.

But man, Dynamite Cop is something else. I had to pick up a copy off of eBay after seeing it.

I disagreed with them skipping through Skies of Arcadia because "it's boring" — come on, it's a fantastic game! Yeah RPGs don't do well on demos, but still, there were lots of scenarios for the demo for them to try.

Dan doesn't have the patience for a JRPG but praises a game like MGS 4. I think the problem is Dan doesn't like reading, but he'll watch a forty minute cutscene of absolute bullshit because he doesn't have to read it.

He did say once he doesn't like foreign films because he has to read subtitles... you may be on to something

Oh look, Dan's trolling again. THPS on N64 was fine. The songs were borked but it played just as well (blisters aside) and looked better. I'll take the fuzziness over the constantly swimming textures and super blocky characters any day.

@game_and_art: They don't hate games from the "eastern region." They're just not big into JRPGs. Dan's favorite series is MGS and that's Japanese as hell. They love Japanese fighting games, action games, arcade games, etc. they just don't care for JRPGs. To whittle the entire output of Japanese development in gaming down to just JRPGs is pretty insulting.

EDIT: Oh look, Dan's trolling again ...again. It sucks when you don't like the controls but the idea that southpaw inverted controls are terrible is asinine.

The N64 version of THPS1 still had "Superman" by Goldfinger on it, so it was still pretty great.
