I see what you did there! And I agree with it.

I'm actually pretty anxious to see how this game turns out.

Brad when they say
"  with X-com we're really trying to preserve the spirit of the original games....."
You say"  by turning a series of quasi-futuristic squad based tactical shooters into a FPS set in the 50s where you shoot blobs of black goo?"

Some pretty impressive ears on this guy.

He definitely seems to be aware of each of the specific complaints people have with this game. Even so, I'm still not sold.

This was probably the first time I've seen a PR guy even admit the presence of a negative attitude to their own game. Really refreshing.

"You guys have taken a pretty storied and revered franchise that was one kind of game and turned it into a very different kind of game. Brave move on your part, given the devotion of the X-COM fanbase."

I'm reminded of Fallout.

so there is still the R&D and faction relation elements and such? so maybe this won't be a total wash. if only it wasn't set in the 50s with a light clean art style (the opposite of the original) and dumb looking UFOs and aliens this would be my most wanted game ever (ok maybe if the combat was like the original or at least as an option but a FPS wouldn't be to bad as long as it is squad based and tactical like rainbow six: vegas or something).

Unfortunately the media pretty much ignored or derided the Fallout fans, voicing no concerns at all.
But they seem quite concerned about how true to the originals are games like Deus Ex or Xcom.
Funny that huh....

OK, this game looks interesting, but it is clearly not proper X-Com game. If I buy this game, I am saying loudly "I am OK with you not making turn based X-Com! Keep making FPS games! Forget the strategy games!"

They just should had released this as a new title with homages to X-Com. Then X-Com fans would have liked it whole lot more.

Ok, it's not the old x-coms. Looking at it without that filter though, this seems like one of the most interesting games I've seen in years. Emergent mission that you have to pick and choose, the stay-until-you-can't-then-run mechanic, managing resources, etc etc. All in a shooter by people who know how to make shooters? I'm sold. I want this, and will buy it. (I really do wish it weren't called XCOM, though.)

I'm glad Brad addresses how bold the move to change X-Com's format is.  It just doesn't come off as a game that should be called "X-Com" to me.

What he said sounded a lot more like the original X-Com games than their advertising and trailers showed. Hopefully we'll get a demo of some of those base features. Honestly, I was saying this game isn't X-Com like everyone else, but if it has those strategic aspects of research, winning approval, and transient dynamic missions, then it has everything I would want. Sure the alien design seems weak, but remember that the designs in the first games were pretty cliche or weird. The more important thing is having a wide array of different aliens with different aspects and strengths. This interview turned me into a hopeful.

This is 2010.  There is nothing "brave" or "bold" about taking a popular non-shooter franchise and turning it into a shooter.  Deciding not to do that would be an infinitely braver decision, no?

Personally, I'm optimistic about it.  The strategy/base stuff sounds interesting, but I think keeping some kind of squad control element in tact is really crucial.  When people in this situation talk about 'pillars' of a franchise -as the Deus Ex guy did, and the Bioware guys often do- squad control is absolutely a pillar of X-Com.

What the guy is saying about the game and the trailer sound like two different things. In other words I like what he has to say, but I don't like what I'm seeing (in comparison to the other X-Com games)

Only after this interview the game clicked, I think it will deserve to be called XCOM. At least in the same way Fallout 3 did.

I've never played any of the other XCOM games, so I'm not all up-in-arms about this new direction. However, I also can't say that I'm blown away by what I've seen. It has a cool art style, and some neat ideas, that's for sure, but for some reason it just doesn't click with me.

But who knows, Red Dead didn't click with me when I first saw it, and now I love it. Maybe the same will happen with this game.
