Love Actraiser! Weird genre mashups like this are common now but this was very novel at the time. Enix did Evo too which was another side scroller rpg blend.

Edit: I wrote that before watching the first five minutes. Whoops.

I remember being introduced to ActRaiser as a recurring game for Nick Arcade.

This game holds UP.

Wow I had heard of ActRaiser before but I had never played it or looked up gameplay of this game. After seeing this, I want to check it out now. It looks like a fun game. I wonder if this is available on the Wii U Virtual Console. Great video Brad!

Yea, this was an amazing game back in the day. That zoom in and music at the start of every stage is still amazing! Really loved the town building BS too!

@bdcool213: It's decent gameplay that combines two genres in a way few (if any other) games do. In fact, I can't think of any other games ATM that combined city-building and action scenes.

Thinking back to the SNES era, it's amazing how many weird/unusual games came out for it near its launch. It's like developers had all these game ideas they couldn't do with the NES/MegaDrive's limitations, and once they got enough horsepower to make them properly the dam burst. We sadly haven't seen anything like that lately; Shadow of Mordor & No Man's Sky are the 2 PS4/Xbone games I can think of that really tried something new & unusual.

So, so many fond memories of this game. The sequel was such a disappointment.

Here's an idea that could never go wrong: who wants to collaborate with me on a spiritual successor? We could make a Kickstarter!

ActRaiser is a super rad game. Nice to see it get some love. ActRaiser 2 is...kind of disappointing, in comparison.

ActRaiser is one of my favorites. This game was so good. They need a sequel. The music is fantastic as well.

Brad might have sold me on this pretty hard. Man, if it was easier to find this game, (outside the VC) I'd be all over that shit. I own an SNES and everything. Might be time for some online hunting.

I played a lot of the japanese version of this so the dialogue options were lost on me but still had a ton of fun with the different style of gameplay that it had to offer.

@poobumbutt: Shouldn't be too hard to find. Just be aware that it uses battery backup and not a password. May have to replace it, not really a game you play through in one sitting.

You damn right Soul Blazer is a different game and it is SO GOOD. Also Actraiser is the best, super happy to see it make the Bombastica. SNES Brad is best Brad.

Also, the soundtrack was by Yuzo Koshiro, who also did the music for Streets of Rage 1 & 2, Super Adventure Island, and lots of other good stuff.

Had no idea. That totally makes sense! Love the hell out of this game.

And that last boss is tough. Took me years to finally kill him.

I so love that brad pointed out the sound of him swinging his sword sounds like him yelling because that's what I always thought it sounded like too! Even when I try to convince myself it's the sword I can't unhear it! He's just a dude with a super raspy voice yelling "Hah!"

I don't know how I've never played ActRaiser. Been hearing about it for so long, but I skipped it as a kid and just never made an effort afterwards.

Nice hat, Brad.

I have a lot of love and a ton of nostalgia for most of Quintet's SNES catalog. ActRaiser, Soul Blazer, and Illusion of Gaia primarily. Such a great developer, shame they're no longer with us.

Was - and is - a fantastic game.

First few music tracks are top-shelf SNES.

[Edit]: He totally says "Ha!" as he swings.

I just remembered one of the things I did to max out my levels in this game. Once I got enough MP to use my earthquake magic, I'd go back and use it on all the towns I'd already cleared. Earthquake destroys all houses that are below the max level, you see, and getting rid of all the lower level buildings means when the villagers rebuild, they'll build the max level homes. Max level homes hold more people, and thus you can fit more people in your town. You could also use lightning to destroy the lower level homes, but that would take a lot longer, plus it destroyed max level buildings as well.

And that is how I learned how to be a cruel god.

Nice entry for the Encyclopedia! This is the game that made me think twice about the Super Nintendo after being a Genesis fan for the 2 years prior. I played Actraiser recently on the Virtual Console and couldn't stop playing it until it was over. Still a fun game after all these years. I will say though that the side-scrolling action was very mediocre, even at the time this came out. It's really the music and strategy game element that makes this one great.
