I will never get why some people use the third-person camera. It's a fishtailing magnet.

Best Burnout!

It sucked that they removed the full refilling of the boost meter on a burnout from every version ever since. That was one of the best and most intense features of the first two games. NEVER LET GO OF THAT BOOST BUTTON!

My first Burnout was Burnout 3. I still think that is the best version.

This game looks really awesome. I never played it. My first Burnout game was 3. I love that game. I think the car models look really nice for when this game came out.

It was this PGR 2 and rallisport challenge 2 that were my top racing games from that generation. However I lost the most of my time to PGR 2. Still one of my favorite drifting models in any game.

2003 was not "early Xbox". The Xbox came out in 2001, and the 360 came out in 2005. By the generational standards of the day, it was in fact right smack in the middle of prime time for the Xbox. But it doesn't matter anyway, because according to GiantBomb.com, Burnout 2 came out on September 30, 2002. :|

Crash mode was the one thing that I really missed from Paradise. Setting up the perfect crash for the most damage was so much fun.

The Xbox made its debut in November of 2001, and Burnout 2 came out in April of 2003. I don't think it's far fetched to refer to that as the Xbox's early days.

I also think that line of thinking has been a bit obfuscated by just how long this generation of consoles has been in the forefront.

The September 30, 2002 date refers to the PS2 release.

The Drew/Ryan combo would've worked better if Drew was piloting and Ryan commenting. There are several reasons for this.

Fun look back, though.

I don't know what Encyclopedia Bombastica is anymore! It used to be a man alone in his bedroom talking into a camera about the video game he is playing. I kinda wanna play Burnout 2 now though.

As soon as they brought up Burnout mixes, I instantly thought of ripping The Chateau and Mona Lisa Overdrive to my Xbox just for that. And then I couldn't help but pump my fist in the air when Drew literally repeated my own thoughts.

When the takedowns in Burnout 3 would coincide with the "bullet time" horn cues in those pieces, they were some of the best music/visual memories of gaming I've ever had.

Ah yes, Burnout 2... one of my favorite PS2 racing titles. B3 obviously being superior but 1 & 2 were both great games. Still have them all on my game shelf, pristine condition.

...and 3 had to have the rubberband AI as you wouldn't be able to get as many takedowns, duh.

Crazy Taxi is where the risk/reward thing that Burnout does came from. It's also where the traffic checking came from, so Burnout owes a lot to that series.

I played a lot of this game back when I was 14 or so. My favorite track was "Big Surf" because it was pretty easy, looked nice, and was long. My favorite car was the roadster.

I remember once getting a (IIRC) a 36x Burnout Chain on Big Surf, basically doing a perfect race of that track over 3 or 4 laps. Never losing boost the entire time. I was so in tuned with that one track...

@bbk: Meh, it is what it is. I enjoy the Bombastica videos more than Quick Looks so if Ryan and Drew make a Quick Look and label it as Bombastica I'm going to call them out on it. If all staffers' Bombastica episodes follow the Quick Look format like this one then I'll back-off and not bring it up again.

Ryan and Drew are HERETICS. Burnout 2's soundtrack is one of the best things about it, the way it goes into overdrive when you boost, it's amazing. Burnout 3's licensed soundtrack was AWFUL. Not to mention the stupid fucking DJ bullshit. It was the worst.

2 is still the best in the series as far as I'm concerned. Compared to 3, it has

- better music

- better loadtimes

- better crash mode

- more intense boost system

- less rubberband AI (3 had the worst in gaming until Motorstorm came along.

- better sense of speed

- splitscreen multiplayer (online was not as much of a thing back then to outweigh the need for splitscreen)

The only thing 3 has over 2 is the addition of Road Rage mode, which I will admit is the best mode in any racing game ever.

- you forgot aftertouch. I loved racking up points by pegging as many opponents as I could in slow-mo with a single tire.

tbh I'd prefer if they did Throwback QLs instead of Bombasticas (meaning videos of old games with better production quality and not some shitty webcam video). Name it what ever you want but I want quality stuff.

F-Zero did the risk/reward thing as well with the boost being tied to your vehicle's health points, so optimally you'd be boosting until one or two more hits would destroy you, find a regen strip and repeat. Unlike Burnout though, if you crash in F-Zero the race is over.

I remember a bunch of times seeing Burnout 1 and 2 in Best Buy for only $10 and I would always pick it up and think hard (the cheap guy I am) about buying it then I would get to that Acclaim logo on the back and I would always put it down...

Wasn't till EA put out Burnout 3 till I knew what a mistake I had made, at the time it was too late Best Buy didn't have anymore of them and I had to pay $20 at gamestop just to get a copy of Burnout 2. Never owned the 1st one could of owned them both if I knew how excellent these games were.

For part 2 I found the crash mode to feel more realistic then in the 3rd game, especially with the helicopter fly through at the end surveying the damage..
