Endurance Run: Chrono Trigger - Part 19

I'm pretty sure I saw this scene on the cover of Heavy Metal in the early 80's.

Vinny and Jeff sit down and take a crack at the latest game in the Shin Megami Tensei series. Will they make it through the entire game?

I don't like it when the game forces party members on you. I get why story wise, it just seems lame if you really liked rolling with a specific group.

I don't like that RPGs give you more characters than you can have in a party period.

You've got seven members to join your party? Balance the fights for seven members and have less battles to even it out. I wish a game would do this, just once.

Heh. Plenty of games have done this. We call them strategy JRPGs. I mean, go play Fire Emblem. It's just like that. There's permadeath in it, too, if you want some hardcore in your tactics and deep regret to go with your big party.

Ryan keeps it tight! The day we get over an hour will be a grand day indeed.

@RockmanBionics: You must really hate the Suikoden franchise then...

They are being too dismissive with dual techs. Some of them are amazing. Just depends on the enemies.

Not really a big deal though.

Guh... Patrick, you're encouraging people's dislike toward you! When Ryan says asks if you should keep going, the answer is never "nah, we've been playing for half an hour". Come on! This stuff is way too much fun to just waste half an hour a day on...

This is true. Patrick needs to stop being a little tranny bitch and start encouraging Ryan to play longer sessions.

In the end they're still playing the same amount they would have if they continued. This way there are more, shorter episodes; the other way there are less, longer episodes. The shorter episodes also make it easier for people to watch, as it is easier to take half an hour out of you day instead of an hour.

Of course, but if I had the choice, I'd watch this like I watched half of the P4 endurance run, since I joined that late; ENDURANCE RUN ALL DAY EVERY DAY. I don't care if it ends quicker that way, I'd watch two hours of this stuff every day if I could! Alas, I cannot. Also, there's some kind of relief knowing that an ER is over and you don't have to spend every day wondering how it went (or every day away from the computer wishing you could catch up). I don't know, I guess it's a preference thing, but I really prefer longer, fewer episodes. It's like, instead of watching a movie to pass the time during the evening, I can watch one episode of the ER!

You know they're not actually playing a half hour every day, right? They're playing all at once and separating it out into episodes. They call a stop to pause the recording/take a break/whatever.

That's why they don't go through the title screen every day.

Patrick...

Thy - possessive, the next word starting with a consonant.

Thine - possessive, the next word starting with a vowel.

Of course, it's not properly used in the game either...

I think it was just getting towards patrick's nap time.

@NoelVeiga: Heh, I know what strategy JRPG's are. I was refering to RPG's like Dragon Age or JRPGS like Final Fantasy or Persona. I've never played Fire Emblem, but from my experience the action in strategy JRPGs mostly take place on maps where you take turns moving and strategically positioning your characters before attacking. There's no walking around outside of battle, instead the story is what will take you from battle to battle. I'd like something more similar to those other games I mentioned just with more than than the usual 3-4 chars in the party limit.

My guess is that it's part balancing issues, part genre convention and part because it just gives variety to the gameplay to sometimes switch between different sets of party members instead of having the player use all of them at all times. I'd still like to see someone try it.

@RockmanBionics: Well, the thing is design is driven by those types of choices. If you're going to be having a huge group battles are going to take longer, and they're going to be more relevant, so rather than a smooth transition from exploration into combat you're going to have more of a strong break, and at that point why would you go and design a third whole gameplay environment with exploration and dialogue and all that stuff if you're not going to be having any of the mechanical gameplay in it?

Not that there aren't medium-to-large groups in some RPGs. What was the cap in Baldur's Gate? Six? But yeah, any larger than that and you're into tactical RPG territory. And even then, in stuff like Shining Force there was a ton of walking around and talking to characters in between the fighting.

I am worried sometimes about how they make this game harder than it needs to be. They dont really buy or swap armor and never restock items. You dont need to die so often! D:

they are a little too dependent on double techs and aren't spreading the xp incase they need fire or more water for other fights. Very entertaining though!

Hrm RPGs where you can't use all your members in battle at once...

In Fire Emblem and Shining Force games you often acquire more characters than you can deploy, which is essentially your beef with traditional RPGs like CT. The original Golden Sun had 4 characters you always use, with the exception of a character you use briefly in the first dungeon. The sequels had you acquire another set of 4 dudes and when the original 4 die the other party just jumps in there so it's kind of like they're all there. Phantasy Star 1 and (mostly) 4 fit the category. FF1 and 3 had constant characters but giving them any sort of character was all the player's job to role play. FF2 had you constantly swapping your 4th member, but the other 3 were constant. FF5 had constant party members but none in the main series did afterwards. Dragon Quest 2 and I think 3, Tales of Eternia, Lufia 1 and 2.. I'm sure there's more, though I can't think of a more modern game that fits.

Let's hope they try out Volt Bite on Nizbel II. It will keep her defense down because it is a lightning attack and it will also still deal high damage because it is also a physical attack.

Also I like when games like CT force you to use certain party members because it forces you to explore and find new ways to play the game (letting you choose all 3 members at the end of the game is a nice touch). It pushes you out of your comfort zone, which is bad, but gives you the opportunity to expand your comfort zone, which I think is worth it.

I was afraid of that. It was the case with Disgaea, but since you created most of your troops yourself with no upper limit it made sense to limit them just so you woudn't brake the game. I just didn't know if it was an outlier or not.

The original Golden Sun had 4 characters you always use, with the exception of a character you use briefly in the first dungeon. The sequels had you acquire another set of 4 dudes and when the original 4 die the other party just jumps in there so it's kind of like they're all there.

I remembered that while thinking of this subject as well. I played the original Golden Sun as well as the latest game and I really appreciated that it did that (even if the game was so easy that I didn't find any use for it until the very last boss).

Playing the Remake of FF4 the party limit was 5, though there was only one brief point in the entire story where you actually had more than 5 characters in your party so that you had to choose which one not to bring, I thought that was neat as well.

I'm mostly fine with the genre doing what it does so long as I can roll with the guys I like and still have a viable team, I'm not much for min/maxing in that regard, but I'd still like to see more games experimenting with this.

As for them using Volt Bite, I'm not counting on it but I'm sure they'll make it trough fine either way. Even if the way they do it will test some users' patience XD

Of course, that's obvious. But doesn't that just make it even easier to justify longer episodes, if they spend hours at a time playing the game in one sitting regardless of how long each part is?

I think the idea is that they want to make it go on as many days as possible, as the ER is a major draw to the site.

Bitch session time; Brono dies, Ryan goes "Oh god, what happened?" What happened was you went into a fight with 165 hp.

Oh man, that screen-shot totally game me a Joe & Mac flashback, specifically the third level. I knew those trapped doors would come back to haunt you! That Tyrano Castle is pretty cool.

"Brown brown uh... bob, bob, bob, bob dole."

Good episode guys.

In conclusion: Paintball pathetic. That is all.

I'm pretty sure that in the old King's Quest games, you could actually WALK around the world. Which is doubly strange because those games all took place in different locations, implying that each land was its own planet.
