@heatdrive88: I remember it feeling like a revelation at the time, and thinking why the hell didn't Rare make this as 1.1. Still didn't help me beat Aztec on 00 agent though...

I'm excited for this. I never played any of the single player, just a little bit of the multiplayer at my friends house. IIRC, multiplayer was basically just a rush to get the golden gun and then kill everybody.

To add to their 'good comedies within the last several years' discussion, "What We Do In The Shadows" is amazing.

I've been wishing for YEARS that you guys would play SHOGO!! Please give it a look!!! I remember that game using the term "mother-loving" on numerous occasions and young me not getting what the hell they were talking about til the very end. I just thought it was a weird translation thing.

Anyway, I have a bone to pick with the idea that people only ever managed to clear 00 Agent with gamesharks. I was the kid at my primary school who people went to to get the 00 Agent levels cleared and the cheats unlocked, and I didn't have a gameshark. It was hard, but not impossible, and I had a lot of fun doing it.

Except Train. Train is just about impossible. Even just clearing it on 00 Agent is probably going to bring this video series to a standstill.

I contend that this game (and Perfect Dark) are only finishable on 00 Agent if you're a 7-19 year-old who has a lot of free time and only a couple of games to play. It's just sooooo much more irritatingly difficult than the normal difficult. Granted, they can just look up guides if they ever don't understand where to find an objective, but still, some of those later levels and bonus levels are going to be rough to watch Dan play through.

@jazz_katz: Totally. It's really the only way to quickly rack up headshots without the use of the "hold to free-aim" mechanic in all these Rare shooters, which honestly makes the game even easier (admittedly with a little practice) by turning OFF auto-aim (because otherwise you're just homing into an enemy's chest/center-mass).

It's also the only control scheme that lets you aim directly for headshots while still having full movement control of yourself in every analog direction (as opposed to using the default 1.1 controls) where it forces you to stop moving to use "hold to free-aim", meaning you don't have any more mobility.

Doubly so, it's far more effective to aim while "strafe-running", which is highly crucial for increasing your run speed - especially if you want to even come close to beating Facility in under 2:05.

@vinny very good observation about it feeling like a 'light-gun' game. As during development, the original vision for the game was heavily inspired by Virtua Cop and similar on-rails shooters

What are the chances that this is the suit Dan wore to his wedding?

Also, Perfect Dark was basically GoldenEye 2 in terms of improvements. And didn't have Oddjob, which is a plus. You could take Elvis's body and put a human head on it to get the same effect, but fuck you if you did.

The only thing I know about Thunderball is that the guys behind the "James Bonding" podcast say it's the worst Bond movie.

I’m only 3 minutes in, but I just wanted to say that man, Dan is really good at his job. Seriously, he’s funny, quick witted and professional and informative when it’s called for. Don’t know why, but that just struck me all of a sudden during the intro shenanigans.

It was hard, but not impossible, and I had a lot of fun doing it.

Except Train. Train is just about impossible. Even just clearing it on 00 Agent is probably going to bring this video series to a standstill.

All of this. I had all but 100%'d this game, the exceptions being that bullshit 2 minute something time for Facility, along with the target time for Caverns. Though for the latter, I had already unlocked the all weapons cheat from Aztec, so I just didn't have the motivation to go for the specific double RCP90s cheat when it was the longest one at like 9+ minutes if I recall correctly.

I don't recall the 00 Agent difficulty being exceptionally difficult, and even then I rarely played games on harder difficulties. For me the only one that I do remember being frustratingly difficult was Control(?) or whatever was the one where you had to protect Natalaya while she hacked the computer. That said, hearing you mention Train, I did immediately get flashbacks of going for the target time on that one and constantly getting to the part where you have to laser the door in the floor and being super anxious about whether I would get the door off in time or not.

Though more than anything else, I remember one morning before school where I had 20 minutes till I needed to go, so I decided to go for one of the short target times. I ended up going for the 1:20 Archives (?) clear time to get invisibility, not realizing how hard that short time would be. I ended up pulling it off before I had to leave, and more than anything else I remember having to memorize how all the doors opened. 'Cause if a door opened out, you could just continue running through it without losing a step. But if a door opened in, you had to be ready to take a backstep immediately after opening it in order to let the door open fully before moving through it. That was oh so crucial in shaving off those last few seconds to make the target time (along with knowing the exact moment you could shoot Dmitry to get the safe key from him early). Goddammit I loved this game.

I'm glad Dan brought up Everything or Nothing apropos of nothing, because he is absolutely correct: it is the best James Bond game and has aged fantastically. I played it back when it came out and loved it, I did a Let's Play of it a few years ago and still loved it; I cannot ever stop singing its praises. The only thing it's missing is a good versus multiplayer mode, but it compensates with a co-op campaign that's almost as long as the standard single-player game itself.

Oh no, actual bearable FOV, what a travesty.
And the reason knockoff Gamecube controllers feel fine is because the authentic ones already feel cheap.
And god, Abby looks miserable for a lot of this. I feel like she needs to watch a dumb, but enjoyable, Bond movie to enjoy this more.

Oh man, N64 blur...it feels like I'm watching trailers from demo discs in the late 90's again.

This seems like a promising series...and sure, bring SHOGO around for a Playdate! The only thing I remember from that right now is the clunky controls.

Great first episode, and what an intro.

I'm looking forward to this whole series because to this day, Goldeneye may be the game I've spent the most time playing. As others have said some of those target times for cheats were some absolute hot flaming garbage, but earning the one in Facility is probably one of my most satisfying gaming achievements.

Clearing the Facility in under 2:05 is still one of my proudest achievements. That was a royal pain in the ass.

My buddy and I would take turns trying to unlock various cheats and the degree to which we had some levels (the cheats that we cared about) memorized is startling because I am totally not the kind of person to bash my head against a thing until perfection is achieved. I'm pretty sure that I got the facility cheat and he got the cheat in the Archives, which were two of the hardest ones, as I remember it.

suggestion to dan: treat the combat like a bond movie. just stand (or crouch) aim and shoot. Or camp outside the door and wait for them to line up (you've been pretty good at that)

godspeed!

It turns out kids have a lot of patience and free time, but not very much money to buy new games.
