With focus and Rorie’s Gamefaqs Dan is able to overcome another level

There was a debate in the chat, stemming from Ryckert sanitizer habits, over whether overuse of sanitizer promoted the spread of disease. It does, though not primarily through promoting resistance:

a) A lot of sanitizers out there don't have the alcohol content necessary to do their job. As Abby mentioned, 60% or more is considered OK. Some stuff sold to the general public doesn't have that.

b) The big problem: people tend to substitute it inappropriately for hand-washing, relying on it to get rid of stuff it's not designed to eliminate. Important quote from the NYT piece: "Alcohol doesn't cut through grime well, so dirt, blood, feces or other body fluids or soil must be wiped or washed away first, if the alcohol in the sanitizer is to be effective. In such cases, hand washing with soap and water is advised."

There was a recent study indicating that some types of bacteria, at least, can become more tolerant of even the 60%+ alcohol stuff (though they still die, despite surviving for longer). Regardless of your opinion on the science regarding resistance, though, overrelying on hand sanitizers does promote disease in other ways. Don't skimp on washing your hands with soap and water.

@indigozeal: I was aware of some of this stuff but this makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the health update! Another positive development is the FDA finally concluding in 2017 that most anti-bacterial agents in sanitizers and soaps (such as Triclosan in Purell) weren't shown to be generally effective enough for inclusion in sanitizers and anti-septic products and again recommend hand-washing.

Beyond efficacy, the (kinda minor) issue with anti-bacterial ingredients used in the past and present is that they're common skin irritants when used frequently (but in a pinch they're fine).

Interestingly, after the 24 that got phased out, there are 6 ingredients that were requested for deferral by producers so currently they are still included in anti-septic solutions for medical and consumer use. Basically it's alcohols, iodine solutions, benzalkonium chloride, and chloroxylenol. I imagine this is why the focus has shifted to alcohol sanitizers (and soaps that include some of the other deferred ingredients). The FDA's evaluations will continue so my guess is that the latter ingredients might well be eliminated eventually like the others.

Seems like in general anti-bacterial additives in soaps aren't doing much more and except maybe irritating your skin a little more easily so phasing that out of common use is probably a good thing.

*Ahem*Achieving the super hard time for Facility granted the invincibility cheat, not the all weapons one. The all weapons cheat was from the bonus Egyptian level, which had a much easier target time to beat, as long you had the floor tile puzzle memorized (I totally looked it up online back then).

I watched Gotti because of this stream, and while it did have its moments, overall its just sort of bland and unaffecting, not hilarious trash.

There's something about the phrase "making whooppee" that makes it sound SO MUCH filthier than "straight-up fuckin'!" It makes me cringe every time I hear it.

i'm aghast that a group of 4 people didn't know the concept that soap cleans and sanitizer disinfects, antibacterial soap does both. "cleaning" your hands with sanitizer doesnt actually get the dirt and oils off! it's not a cleaner!
