@janman: Minecraft water is biased towards height drops, so it will turn towards the nearest drop-off and not spread, which is why it keeps turning and going directly into your side-troughs instead of flowing across the top of the farm land. You also only need 1 block of water within 4 blocks of your farmland, so you don't need those big troughs on either side.

anyone else keep thing about system of a down whenever they say "terra cotta"

I don't think torches work quite how Abby wants them to work. Lighting an area up will reduce spawns, but you can't light it up to a point where monsters won't go there. The number of torches is a definite overkill and won't stop enemies from coming inside the house.

I did use a modpack in the past that had torches which would actively repel enemies, though. But we'll have to wait until the GB endeavours get so ambitious that they delve into modding for that one.
