Film & 40s: Film & 40s: The Return of the Living Dead

The Beast crew kicks off an October of delightful horror cinema with a zombie classic best known for both its extremely cool teens, and extremely gross practical effects.

An audio accompaniment to your movie viewing pleasure with your friends at Giant Bomb.

Episode Notes:

This podcast is an audio supplement, meant to be played simultaneously with the film The Return of the Living Dead. We are watching the film via a US Blu-ray release. Streaming and rental options can be found here.

Our commentary begins at the film's opening title card, where the movie says everything is a true story and all the people are real. It looks like this.

Fun movie. Is Bert/Burt and Ernie a Sesame Street homage?

This is one of the few horror flicks that's ever truly scared me, and it's the only one in the zombie genre that succeeds... And it's partially a comedy.

I saw this clearly way too young and, you know, 28 Days Later hadn't come out or anything so I think the concept of running zombies was something else. I distinctly recall being calm while watching it with my friend and not finding it that scary until I had to go home. Running zombies felt like cheating so I raaaaan as fast as I could. To this day I've only seen it once and I still remember scenes and lines from it.

EDIT: Oh right, Ernie was clearly a Nazi in this movie, right?

This was great, both the movie and commentary.

I'm kinda wondering what the others end up picking. Ghostbusters would be an obvious pick for Vinny. As for Dan, I'm gonna say...Aracnophobia, Army of Darkness, Event Horizon, Gremlins 2 or Killer Klowns. Somehow I feel like Abby would probably pick something more recent, like Get Out or Witch. My hope is that all the movies would be from the 80/90's, really.

@glots: I hope Alex finds that copy of The Blob... or was it called The Stuff. Ok I think those are two different movies. But which ever one Alex mentioned a few Beastcasts ago.

This was my first Film & 40s. Luckily this film is available to me on Netflix. It was great listening to there reactions in real-time. Took a bit of faffing about to get the film and podcast synced up and I made the rooky mistake of pausing the film at one point and not the podcast, but apart from my school boy errors this was great. I'll be checking the other podcasts out.

Each one of them (unless I completely misunderstood) is picking a movie and Alex chose this one, so The Blob remake is probably a no-go. That would be great though...I can almost picture all the "EWWWS!" that would be heard. The Fly would be another good candidate for grossness.

Oh it's such fun.

Perhaps upon rewatching it I'll resolve the plot hole of why that one guy is looking for the magic when he's Dwight in the middle of it.

I can't believe they didn't pick up on the Bert/Ernie thing. Laughed my drunken arse off when I realised it.

I'm a very late to the Party horror fan so this will be a great series for me to catch up I think. This was a great start, and I can't wait to see what others have picked.

Hoping for Hereditary, which I feel would be an AMAZING Film and Forties.

I made a horror movie schedule for this month and I haven't been on the site in a couple days, so I didn't know what was coming up. Well, of course I jump on today and I find out they did a Film&40's on the same movie I watched and even did it on the same day I watched it. I guess I just have to watch Return Of The Living Dead again, but I'm perfectly alright with that. Also, here's my schedule for the month:

I adore this movie! It is just so over the top and wonderful.

I do have trouble going back to this movie knowing that Brian Peck (Scuz) is a pedophile especially given how involved he has been with some of the home video re-releases.

I love the haphazard storage of potentially world ending materials that this plot relies on. The effects are great, making up for the poor plot and overacting, I'll give it a pass because its charmingly 80's. A great movie to clown on and get drunk to, love this feature.

I love this movie, and got about 20 minutes into this podcast before I decided to commit to watching the movie alongside it. This was, in fact, my first Film & 40s. Incidentally, the movie is available on Amazon Prime streaming. I had a hell of a time trying to sync up from the web player, in part because of the extremely low resolution scrubbing, and wound up playing the podcast from my phone with an earbud in one ear. Hopefully the redesign has a more full-featured player.

I think the crew did a great job on this, thanks to Alex for bringing it up.

By the way, did you notice that the owner of the medical supply and the mortician were named Bert and Ernie?

You're thinking of Dawn of the Dead. The 1970s version, not the Zack Snyder remake.

@bybeach: In my experience Film and 40s are best when you've already seen the movie, so you can focus on their commentary/reactions and not worry about missing some dialogue. Hope you enjoy it!

I find the exact opposite - I find them much more interesting when I _haven't_ seen the movie before.

The UK Special Edition DVD is a different framerate, making the audio continually go out of sync.

Upping the tempo by 4.176% seems to do the trick.
Audacity
Encoder for exporting mp3s
Download mp3>Open in Audacity>Effect>Change Tempo...>File>Export Audio...as 128kb/s mp3

There also seems to be a scene missing that's on the US blu-ray, at some point before the barrel springs a leak. So you need to resync after that.

So, I knew I recognized that guy who plays Spider, but I couldn't remember from where. He was in Friday the 13th A New Beginning (the 5th one- which interestingly he did the same year as this movie), and more importantly he was in Street Fighter The Movie as Dee Jay!

Also fun fact: he is still working in the movie biz.
