Hey @ybbaaabby, just to address your concern, I've heard the game doesn't actually let you romance anyone until later in the game after there's a multiple-year time jump. So the characters are no longer your students, they're peers in the army of whatever nation you chose.

Wow, the character art and models are gorgeous, but the backgrounds are hideous. The background textures look awful close up and the lighting seems really harsh. I saw some bad screenshots floating around, but I thought those were just one-off instances of weirdness. The contrast between the beautiful characters and grimy textures makes the whole thing look garish.

Maybe it's less noticeable in portable mode?

Golden Deer tho. They're scrappy and Claude is a charming leader.

It hasn't been that long since a FE came out. Shadows of Valentia came out on 3DS in Spring 2017.

Anywho, I'm really enjoying the game thus far.

This game has absolutely captivated me unlike any game all this year. Yesterday I was playing and all of a sudden it was 12 hours later. Only 22 hours in overall but its been great

In order to unlock those hidden potentials you need to instruct them in it during the classes. Usage wont help it. In fact they'll learn at a pretty slow rate from usage and study in it until you get all three stars filled from instructing them.

Laughed at Abby being weirded out by being able to romance teachers. She hasn't seen many anime games.

The game I hear keeps teacher/student stuff platonic until an apparently appropriate time. Mileage may vary. I hope Dan keeps updated on the beastcast because there is a lot of game left after this; he's maybe 10% there?

Just so everyone is clear, Dan is actually wrong about same-sex romances: there are zero gay romance options for male Byleth in Fire Emblem Three Houses.

EDIT: Turns out I'M wrong but it seemed from what I read there was a bait and switch gay romance but that's thankfully not true.

Are you sure? I've seen a few outlets say that M!Byleth can romance Linhardt. Still pretty weak, though.

@robpigott: I don't know how to do spoiler tags on mobile but that is not correct. Dan is right about same sex marriages, the number is just super, super low.

I also chose the Black Eagles and can confirm that Hubert is an asshole. He seems to aspire to be Edelgard's asshole, so she doesn't have to be an asshole to anyone.

I have played this game for about ten hours and I think it's also really, really good.

Also, to clarify you do NOT gain stars from using the weapon in combat. You gain them by teaching them that skill during the lesson sections. I believe it's 3 lessons per star.

I'd consider her pretty badass. She's terrified of everything, but still manages to murder countless people. I could only aspire to be as badass as her.

Just gonna echo it here before it becomes the brunt of the conversation here, the romances in the game don’t happen till after the time skip, where you and your students are more peers in an army

@mrfluke: I mean.. it's marginally less weird I guess. But nothing about your relationship with them or how they view you really changes so I dunno.

Fire Emblems had a slightly creepy undertone for a while now that it's best not to think about too much, but this one is less so overall I think.

Black Eagles suck so much dude, I can't believe so many people choose them. Hubert sucks, Bernadetta sucks, Caspar sucks and to top it all off they have the girl with the stupid looking hat. They are actually the worst house of all.

The game does have romance, but you cannot actually romance people when they are students.

I havent finished the game yet, but from what ive heard where the romance stuff goes is that it is just a bunch of sweet conversations, nothing overtly sexual. which to me if thats what it really amounts to, its totally whatever for me

but ill agree with you there that this one is the least weird of them all., the previous game (i think it was the first 3ds one) had like face rubbing (which look, that's for the Japan audience and their culture) and mating which created an extra solider.

But also news came out that this game was for the most part developed by Koei-tecmo, so that may explain it as well.

Never played a fire emblems game but have always wanted to but this doesn't seem like the best one since it's basically a harry potter visual novel. What's the best ones? Fates? Awakening?

@steveurkel: Awakening is pretty damn good to enter the series with, but honestly Three Houses blows it out of the water. The tighter cast and generally better writing, along with the ability to turn back time in case of fatal mistakes, makes it probably the best game in the series.

Plus there's no lewd facerubbing. Instead there's elegant teatime!
