I'm ashamed of being really pedantic so I'm gonna hide it behind a spoiler.

When you are above 70km, you haven't escaped the planet's gravity- that gravity is what keeps you in orbit, and it extends out a long way. (For example for Earth, at the altitude of the ISS at about 400km, the gravity is about 90% of what it is on Earth's surface- weightlessness is due to the freefall, not because of lack of gravity.)

When you get below 70km, what's happening is that you're hitting the atmosphere, and the drag from the air (thin as it may be) is slowing you down. Since velocity is what keeps you in orbit, this will (eventually) drag you down.

I'm so happy y'all are playing KSP again, though- its honestly my favorite game of all time, and that's a hard spot to fill.

@vinny: The original Cassini–Huygens mission was only scheduled for 2004-2008.

e: Not gonna lie, seeing the Luda Lander and the Kerbal crew back in action is kinda awesome.

Oh hell yeah. What a nice surprise to wake up to on a lazy saturday. Beast crew with some Kerbal. Can't wait....I miss Austin too but Waypoint is cool so its all good. Still Project BEAST 2, if it ever happens, wouldn't be the same without him. I'd still be all for it though.

Great to see Project BEAST have a mini resurgence.

Vinny looks so happy playing, Abby was fascinated by the whole thing and Alex was happy Vinny was playing it again.

What a nice change of pace from all the competitive videos we've had recently from GBE.

It does make me miss Austin a bit though...

Project BEAST, reformed for one last mission.

Their goal: To destroy a celestial body, by smashing into it with a rocket.

Mission status? 100% Success.

Kerbin counts as a celestial body, right?

@randalian: i think you are right. On the one hand, I try to be optimistic about people's capacity to learn and improve, but on the other hand either Dan or the opportunities presented to him by the kansas educational system did not a complete education make. On the gripping hand, I like a nice calm appreciation of the wonders of our (simulated) solar system without an endless barrage of "how does gravity?".

i'm only halfway through right now but I feel like someone in the chat should have told them not all the planets orbits are on the same plane and you need a different angle not just to burn outwards

Alex talking about balloon lifeforms on gas giants immediately made me think of the artwork from the National Geographic book 'Our Universe'. It seemed like one of the go-to space books for his/my generation.

@avyshue: Ideally they could get Dan into a Project BEAST where they teach Dan about space physics, but they would need Dan to get into his best New Dan self. I don't really see this happening though.

I am so glad we returned to KSP on GBE, and mention of one of my favourite things GB ever did getting Scott Manleyto come into the offices. That episode still has what I consider Drew's best reaction when Scott explains orbital dynamics, despite the memes trying to tell us otherwise.

Yay! I just finished re-watching the last Kerbal adventure from Vinny Alex and Austin (who i miss having around here). I can't wait to dig into a new one with a new crew :)

I feel like it's been long enough for them to have forgotten everything they learned last time. I'm not worried though, in Kerbal failure if half the fun.

Edit mid watch: Oooo I love the this but it kills me just a little bit hearing Vinny and Alex teach Abby all the helpful half right kerbal wisdom they've mis-remembered :)
Also Abby just intuitively understanding apoapsis completely then being "corrected"

This is so great to see. Project BEAST was my introduction to Giant Bomb and probably why I subscribed. VinnyVania helped... But Kerbal led me to that so it gets the credit.

Nice to see it pop back up again! :D

KSP helped me learn so much about orbital mechanics. It sparked an interest that made me seek out the information from many sources (special thanks to Scott Manley). No game has really ever done that before, at least not to that extent. Also, KSP is both the most chill and at the same time most nerve racking game I've ever played. Space is my jam.

Really makes me remember Austin's: "Vinny! What did you DO!!!!!!?!?!?!?" when Vinny accidentally went like 1000x speed and crashed them into earth on a return trip. Both Alex and Austin were stunned.
