It's simple people.

The reason Brad is being a hypocrite about Mass Effect 2 is because during the Game of the Year debate, Brad is going all out for Star Craft 2. He knows a lot of people think It's Mass Effect 2 and he doesn't  want it to win. He would sooner see Red Dead Redemptiion or some other game win before Mass Effect 2. To Brad, Mass Effect 2 is the enemy of Star Craft 2.

Of course they already recorded it, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Will Brad get his way in the end?

Brad's crazy. OF COURSE if you go screw around after that point in ME people will die. What did he expect? Leaving aside the fact that it's telegraphed pretty strongly, Everybody getting captured, and you bot going to save them right away, should result in their deaths. How stupid would it be if time just froze, and you could just run around for ever, then come back and save them as if nothing had happened?

The game shows you what happens when people are captured. They disappear. If your priority wasn't to save the crew, that's fine, it's a choice you can make. But the only logical outcome to that choice is that your crew won't make it.

@thebigJ_A I haven't finished the game, but I read your comment before listening and thought of it during the discussion. Do they really make it that clear? Because he is adamant about not knowing what would happen.
... I know I shouldn't judge his gaming style by Quick Looks (and especially the ER,) but he has a natural habit of disregarding, ignoring, forgetting, and skipping past VERY important information. If he does that on his own time, that's a problem.

" Quote from Brad's own Five Star review of Mass Effect 2:

The story gains momentum and intrigue from this fundamental shakeup, and you get a more colorful cast of characters to work with thanks to the relative lawlessness you're operating in. There's a breakneck pacing to working on the fringes of the galaxy, and of galactic society, that really grabbed me and pulled me right along for the ride.

 http://www.giantbomb.com/mass-effect-2/61-21590/reviews/

To then turn around and say this game doesn't belong on the list of best story of the year...  And then in this podcast you say it's story is disjointed!  You have ZERO credibility and I have lost all respect for you.

ME2 has the best story of 2010, hands down.

I am done with these GOTY podcasts.  Too much emotion and personal agendas, not enough honesty and integrity.

Goddamit Brad needs to learn to talk around plot points, he just totally ruined the end of Alan Wake for me. Its not even the first time its happened, he did the same thing with the Prince of Persia reboot a while back. Just because something has being out for a couple of months doesn't mean everyone has finished it :S

Apart from that, its this GOTY stuff is rather awesome like always.

Dude, when they're deliberating game of the year stuff, you should expect them to cover spoilers, because they're probably going to use explicit plot points to argue for or against games, as opposed to the normal podcasts when they're discussing a game and they can sort of wink and nudge around it.

In the normal podcasts however, I'd say yeah, he's done that a couple times. He's been quite good about not spoiling plot elements tol, though (Silent Hill), so it's a mixed bag.

So the part where collectors track Normandy down and board it while Shepard is gone, and you have to play as Joker and sneak through it to save it, that's less interesting than crossing the border to mexico and unlocking more missions.

The discussion about story is silly. There is no such thing as good story or bad story. Story is just story. Its the plot (the storytelling) that matters. Some stories feel better than others because you prefer the content or what happens. Simply put Story is neutral, any story can be made amazingly fun to take in if told well. Look at films like No Country for Old Men or Pulp Fiction. The stories of these films are very simple and not a great deal happens but they are told fantastically.

While Mass Effect 2 has a lot of great storytelling, when you say "Best story" you are talking about A STORY. Mass Effect 2's missions are COMPLETELY disconnected beyond the recruiting thing. And when you are talking about a trillogy, Mass Effect 2's story completely fucks over people who actually enjoyed the story in the first game. Mass Effect 2 is just a massive retcon, and THE story is fucking weak. There are like 3 main missions. When the recruiting missions are treated as much like optional missions as they are, I don't think it's fair to bunch them up in "The Story of Mass Effect", because it's too seperated. If they tied everything together, made the characters in question interact more (other than "I hate her!" and having to choose between two characters). Now, if we are talking about best storytelling, Mass Effect 2 should totally be up there. But the actual story in ME2 is not only REALLY sparse, but it's also kind of a fuck you to the previous events in the franchise. The Shepard from Mass Effect NEVER would have worked with the Illusive man. You work so hard in the first game to work towards a certain thing, and then that is totally ignored and the next game is all about getting a team together. I love the seperate stories in Mass Effect 2, but all of that shit is too seperate to be considered part of a singlular story.

@MordeaniisChaos: Man I feel sorry for you.  You're stuck in very narrow thinking of what game story telling should be.  ME2 is not trying to be an interactive movie like RDR.  It's closer to a season of a Sci-fi series like Babylon Five.

Shepard getting resurrected is the season opener where they set up the over arcing storyline of the Collectors. Then you have the Grunt episode, then the Jack episode, etc.  Then a guest star from the previous season shows up (Liara) for an episode.  And the big season finale is the attack on the Collectors.

Try to break out of your narrow view of what game story telling should be and think of the big picture.  I think you'll find games are more fun then.

What the fuck are you even talking about, the end of Mass Effect 2 was great. As Vinny said, the fact that it was shaped like a human had reasoning behind it in the story and was the whole purpose for the game. Yeah, they could have made it look less like a terminator, but who gives a fuck. That is probably the most retarded complaint about a great game that I have ever herd.

Also, the Starcraft story is fucking stupid and terrible. The campaign is great but the story itself is kind of stupid.

Also also, I really dont know how they would even conceive NOT putting Mass Effect 2 in the top three.

I haven't read or listened to anything further than this but I get the strong sense that Brad's constant anti-Mass Effect 2, non-stop bitching campaign is part of a dumbass attempt to attack it so Starcraft 2 is considered GoTY.

Brad's Top 3 of the year for best story:

Starcraft 2
Super Meat Boy
Minerva's Den

Brad doesn't understand how to seperate story and other components of games from the entirety of the game itself, hence his silly, backward arguments these entire podcasts.

So hearing you guys talk about the new Layton and finding out that nobody actually finished it...  Well, of course there is a twist, and nothing is truly as it seems.  I won't spoil it here, I'm sure you can seek it out if you want to know, but I highly recommend giving it a try.

Brad's anti Mass Effect bent is baffling to me. There was no warning that your crew members could die? They tell you explicitly that you should go after your crew as soon as possible. Clearly he wasn't paying attention.
And Starcraft II had a good story? Seriously? Nah.

I don't understand Brad's argument that the appearance of the final boss ruins the Mass Effect story. Regardless of how the enemy looks the story is still the same. You can play through the game as a man or a woman and the story is still the same. Although the appearance of the boss of the boss may subtract from the game it changes nothing about the story.

Man, I forgot how hard Vinny was fanboying over Mass Effect. He kinda overreached on some of his arguments. Funny to listen to this after hearing the mass effect shenanigans during the 2016 goty deliberations.
