The Giant Bomb crew don’t seem to realize they’re in a bubble as far as PC gaming goes. Sony’s going to have a hard time selling the PS4 Pro because it’s simply not much faster than a PS4 to really make a difference, but no one’s debating that or a new video card, especially at Dan’s $100 trade-in difference. I don’t know anyone who has a PC in their living room or even a SteamLink to broadcast that stuff over. Yeah, sure, people may “know” that the PS4 is faster and be buying it in droves, but they’re not the people that are shelling out $1000 for a gaming PC because they don’t like Microsoft or Sony’s marketing so they can DEFINITELY have the best technical presence at all. They’re not buying VR headsets, they don’t care about new video cards, they definitely don’t care about 4K yet.

Enthusiasts, like myself, have excellent PCs and appreciate having Microsoft bringing games like Forza Horizon 3 and Gears to Windows so we can have it run faster/in higher resolutions, but fewer people are buying computers than ever before. Like, there’s been reports about it everywhere since netbooks and iPads came out years ago. People are buying tablets and phones instead. For a lot of people, gaming is mobile, a console, or nothing. PCs are also not any easier to buy now than they were a decade ago, either. You could walk into a Best Buy in 2000 and get a decent eMachine (granted: bloatware) and play games on it. My parents did that with Packard Bells in the late 90s.

The Bomb crew can understand the PC advantage as people who are constantly bombarded with the best-of-the-best hardware and cutting-edge presentations from the developers themselves, but PC gaming is not on the verge of some “incredible win” as Jeff likes to keep pitching. It will always be the elite enthusiast option and a step above what most gamers are willing to afford/put up with.

@npfeifer: That's a rather North-American perspective (which is fair enough, of course). Far be it from me to pretend I'm speaking for all Europeans, but...

I don't know anyone who owns an XBone and I know exactly one person who has a PS4. All my friends play games on their PC's or laptops. PC gaming has always been more or less the default here. I imagine the same goes for Korea, and the opposite is true for NA and Japan.

There's a lot more to say but very little time... maybe later. I will say though that PC sales have probably also dropped (I don't have the data) because system requirements and hardware advancements have slowed down quite a lot in recent years and only now seem to be significantly increasing again. My Pc is like 6 years old and has only just started struggling with the newest games. My personal theory is that requirements have been held back by the crazy long generation of consoles that was XB360/PS3.

Anyway...

I also heard that people aren't really buying tablets anymore. Probably because of similar reasons.

@npfeifer: Isn't it more PC vs Console AND 4k TV they were talking about? The TV cost puts the console into elite enthusiast range too.

I think the point was IF you have that sort of budget and you really want your games to look as good as possible, it still doesn't make much sense to go console even though that's the scenario Sony themselves are outlining.

Ps4 pro seems great, but the Ps4 original user base is so large already. I can't see it selling well.

Where is the ReCore video that they streamed? I saw something on Twitter about it during work but it still hasn't been posted.

Interesting talk about ReCore. Hopefully there's a way to lessen the endgame grind by doing everything possible in each area before moving on. Though backtracking is probably inevitable with these Metroidvania style games.

@corvidus: No, they weren't talking about that the price of 4K TVs. That said, people are just going to accidentally get 4K sets in the same way they got 3D TVs: the tech just happened to be built in when they needed a replacement.

@efesell They're constantly talking about how much better their PC gaming experience is, but their PCs definitely aren't that old. They talk about 1080s when they have have 9xx cards and those are still relatively new.

But what you are saying is totally based on your bubble. I have a lot of friends who are casual gamers who in the past year and a half have decided to build gaming PC's. Yes, purchases of PCs are dropping in general, but there are still people out there interested in the tech and having a machine that works fast for the work they do with the added benefit of playing 2 or 3 games a year. I don't think EVERYONE does that, but I think a lot of people do. It's all based on perspective.

The biggest difference between consoles and PCs are more fundamental. Consoles are a single decision purchase impulse. While a PC is 5+

When it comes to selling it, it hardly is about which one is more powerful. So, when discussing something like a PS4 pro, you are still talking about selling a product again to people who already have it. It sounds wasteful, but it's more effective than you would think.

I know that Jeff is right about this being silly, but he is thinking it from a perspective of common sense. And common sense does not apply that much when it comes to buying things :P.

Edit: That being said, maybe it's time to get a better gaming PC...haha.

The bombcast is probably the worst marketing San Fransisco has. The city should probably buy ad-time so the guys have to rave about the city every week :)

I'm surprised no one brings up Bit.Trip Runner when talking about Super Mario Run. That game has already shown how a level based runner works.
