Giant Bombcast 469: Meme Money, Meme Problems

Like many people I'm bummed out by Drew leaving, being a flight sim fan & more recently an Elite Dangerous commander. Where will I go now to get my weekly 30 secs of coverage for the games I love...?

Also a tip from DOWNUNDA- Barramundi is Australia's top fresh water 'sports fish'. It also should be pronounced 'Ba (as in Bat) - rah (as in the egyptian sun god) - mun ( as in run) - dee (like that guy from the ramones or whatever.)

Thanks for the podcast. Drew will be missed considering what an OG staffer he is. I don't blame him for wanting to fly planes instead. I honestly didn't know about this Drew gif phenomenon until hearing this podcast. To me it's like, it's just another Giant Bomb gif. I can think of at least 5 Jeff gifs that I think are funnier but that's just me. Plus I think gifs are funnier than the people who randomly post them, as if they want to do away with human language in favor of an inside joke. I can't help but think this Drew thing mainly caught on because Drew is what you would traditionally consider a "handsome" dude and I mean that in most hetero- of ways. It's probably a lot easier to market than Jeff's gorgeous face, sorry Jeff.

Jeff's gotten me fairly stoked to play Horizon. It's funny when I was listening to him talking about blowing pieces off of enemies to expose slots I was hoping the next thing he was going to say would be: "Then you expose these HDMI ports and blow them the fuck up." to which I would've reacted "Fuck yeah! Fuck HDMI!" If it turns out that HDMI is the main bad guy then that will be my game of the year by default.

I guess the fame... the money... and the women corrupted Drew. It was only inevitable after becoming a meme that he would think he's too good to stick around with the rest of these hack frauds.

I just caught up with this podcast, man, genuine tears of sadness welled in my eyes. I'm a 44 year old grown man goddamit. I have been privileged to be able to share in all the minutes I have enjoyed from the whole team since I first started following in the early days and I have genuinely loved hearing what Drew has been up to, the games he has been playing, his perspective on things, his sense of humour, man the list just keeps going. Honestly surprised by the tears heh, you will be sorely missed dude. All the best with your bright future and can't wait to hear you on the show again and hear about your adventures. Fly safe friend.

As someone who considered getting my PPL, I am going to miss Drew's flying updates. Also he was more in my age range, so I had more in common with him in my gaming "history" than the other dudes, so he was more relateable at times. But that's okay. Good luck man--hope we continue to hear a lot from you on your new project.

Also wanted to chime in to say that I'm sorry to see Drew go. His relative lack of video games knowledge and outsider's perspective always gave the site a refreshing sense of balance, and if anything he was always there to remind us of how awesome the world outside of gaming can be. I'd like to think he helped encourage the rest of the site to branch out into covering other non-gaming topics. And that's great!

Still that guy was made to do more than sit in front of a camera and play video games, and that's cool. The Giant Bomb crew act as guides for navigating the vast fictional (and non-fictional) worlds. So no matter where Drew goes, he'll always have a captive audience.

@nagafen: Funny, I'm in near exactly the same mentality, just without the Dan love, though I'll give a nod that he brought some fun content to the site after a bit of a low season.

I have some favorite moments on GB, but the site I came to love seems to be slipping away and with it, my interest in gaming.

I have the same worries about GiantBomb given how many people have come and gone or moved around this last year but I have confidence these guys will pull something off and keep doing what they do. Plus I'm excited to see who joins now!

Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire (GBA) allowed you to walk into the sprite of beds, to make it look like you were under the covers. When I was going to turn the game off, I always tried to save in a bed so when I would resume later, it would look like I was waking up.

Already commented this on the video version, but Drew leaving is probably the least surprising crew move. He always seemed to have the strongest talents and passions outside of video games compared to the other guys. Still sad as hell about it, though. I've only been on this site for a few years, but Drew quickly became one of my favorite crew members.

Drew has achieved his life long dream of playing through all the Metal Gear games and now with nothing else to conquer in life, he must leave us. Thank you for the great series, you will definitely be missed.

I'd say almost any 16-bit or 16-bit-like game does this trick. Chrono Trigger, FFVI, Stardew Valley, Harvest Moon and Breath of Fire all immediately leap to mind.
