Giant Bombcast 474: "Fun!"

The critics agree: this week's podcast features a "stellar cast" including Supergiant's Greg Kasavin, some fast and furious game-industry chat, and plenty of action news with Destiny, Call of Duty and StarCraft!

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

Oh I see Hollow Knight is on the tag list so wonder who played it? Currently playing it myself and really enjoying it. Can someone tell me the time when it is discussed please?

EDIT: Never mind, found it! It was at the 1 hour 12 minute mark

Not that it would necessarily fix this, but its why I've been hesitant to accept the video format. It's already affected things like doing things visually rather than explaining like on radio, and it takes a person off the Bombcast to run the cameras.

My guess being Jason would at least start conversation about it.

@huser: I'm not sure what you mean by this, because Jason and Drew have always been involved in the conversations while running the cameras. Plenty of Jason's God Eater Minutes happened with him at the controls, and he will frequently chime in to chat about stuff. I do agree on them sometimes making gestures, though, which they've done a couple of times recently in ways that don't come across on audio.

Eh, the Zelda franchise is the same story over and over. You fight Ganon to rescue Princess Zelda over and over and over again. I think the only game in the main franchise to break that mold was Majora's Mask, which took place after Ocarina of Time ( a game in which you... fight Ganon to rescue Princess Zelda).

As far as spoilers go, I think this is the gaming equivalent of Rorie telling us that grass is green and the sky is blue. :-P

Edit addition: come to think of it, the main quest you get at the very start of the game is "defeat Ganon." Breath of the Wild is really upfront about things.

@rorie Not that you need the extra motivation, but I've got a 1080ti in my system right now... it's sooooo good. DOOM at 1440p/Ultra/144fps feels filthy and delicious.

Keep an eye out here if you want to pick one up at retail prices (or just wait until the versions with aftermarket cooling solutions become available.)

Glad to hear that Killer 7 made an impression on Greg. Not the greatest minute-to-minute gameplay, but just the overall structure and variety of those missions/story vignettes, and the story, visual style, and tone of the whole game is really something else.

Pixar has actually only released two films in the same calendar year once: Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur in 2015. Neither of these films were sequels. This year will mark the second time it happens: Cars 3 and Coco with one of them being a sequel.

@elvenstein: I think they were more so talking about Pixar releasing films slower than one film a year for the first bit of their career, but now Disney has pushed them to pretty much always release a June film every single year now. Prior to that, there was often a two year gap between each film.

Then again, hard to say whether that has affected the quality. I mean, WALL-E and Up came out almost exactly a year apart, and those are two of the absolute best Pixar films.

I'm definitely biased because I love the kotor games, but I think they absolutely hold up. The combat is fine, but a little clunky. The experience is amazing though. Nothing comes closer to making you feel like the star of your own star wars movie than kotor 1.

Kotor 2 does some really interesting things with the star wars mythos, but it might not be as easy to get into considering how unfinished it is even with restored content mods.

@huser: Ah, I didn't think about the fact that they lose a person to produce the video, you're very right. I don't think watching them talk is worth that loss, the podcast isn't particularly animated so nothing's really lost.

@darthozzan: They are more specifically saying the necessity of orders was not pre-existing knowledge within the game's community, but rather something that developed over a long, long period of time. As opposed to SC2 for which things like that started out as known quantities.

Put it another way, SC was distilled down to a science over the course of a decade. SC2 starts off already half way through the process.

@bisonhero: IIRC, to hear one ex-Pixar animator explain it (one of the guys on Extra Credits), Pixar has like 3 different teams constantly at different stages of different products, and people move between the teams as the film enters different stages.

Might be why they're able to handle that kind of schedule since their movies are still getting way more than 1 years time from pre-production to release.

@turambar: Yeah, out of the gate, SC2 was more of a competitive game because of the tryhard ELO-style matchmaking where you actually had to know the proper strategy or you were going to get crushed.

SC, by virtue of its random room-based game browser, plus the custom map settings games, was much more of a fuck around, play it how you want to play it game. 1998-2005 didn't have anything like YouTube or Twitch, so the percentage of players who had any idea what tournament caliber SC was supposed to look like was dramatically lower than the number of people who had that information for SC2. I knew very few people who bothered to look up proper build order and strategy for SC, but that's all anybody did for SC2.
