Jar Time w/ Jeff

Jar Time w/ Jeff: 09/12/2016

There's only one jar, and it's sitting on my desk in San Francisco. Hopefully someone was drinking something out of that jar while this video was being recorded 40 miles away.

You ask the questions, Jeff Gerstmann supplies the answers.

I posted a thread on the PC forum years ago talking about how the PC is king and will dominate over the consoles in the future, pointing out how the modern consoles are really under-powered PCs. Some replied agreeing with me, but most disagreed. To those people, I hate to say I told you so... but I told you so.

@av_gamer: Seems a weird thing to post on here.

Also, Jeff and the rest of the GB team consistently downplay the sales numbers of consoles. I truly love this feature but I don't come to GB for industry trends as much as the personalities. Jeff said that the XB1 is doing okay in Europe. Which is simply untrue.

Consoles and their games still sell and without their existence, PC games would suffer. Which seemingly is never brought up in these discussions. There would simply be way less games. And I'm not sure why anyone in the industry would want that to happen.

Not sure we'll get too far away from some of the stuff we saw on the Wii in VR because the Wii did its best to do the things that you kinda need VR to do. On the Wii you pointed a gun. In VR, games like Onward, you reload exactly the way you reload IRL. On the M249 you open the top, drag the belt in, slap the top lid back and pull that thingy on the right side to load the first round. That adds a lot to me. I saw a dude drop a mag on the ground in panic the other day whilst under fire. Stuff like that is truly amazing IMHO.

If you want to get into VR right now, get into VR for the same reason you would have bought an Atari 2600 when it came out: You want to be in on the ground floor and see this shit evolve. That is truly exciting to me. I was here when the NES came out and made my Atari look like a turd. I was there when the 16bit era kicked off, when the 3D era kicked off and so on. Every time there was somewhat of a shift there was a period of OK games that got steadily better over the next 3 years. Meanwhile, PC and Consoles today have had little to no evolution for the past 10 years or so. Just near future shooters. I'm so tired of those games. Clicking on peoples faces with a mouse just doesn't do shit for me anymore. Not after I tried VR for a couple of months. I will never be able to play a simulator on a screen ever again. Racing, Flight or whatever. Just no interest in playing them on a screen.

As I see it, the games that might capture people's imagination are games like Media Molecule's Dreams, which is essentially a game engine for people to make their own games in. LBP in full 3D. I'm into VR for those reasons, creativity and following the evolution of a completely new platform. I have no doubt that it will thrive, if not now then at the point where you wear glasses with AR. Sooner or later, people will realize that they're spending an insane amount of money on phones.. Phones that do the same thing your old phone did just fine.. Suddenly we're spending 500+ bucks on something that gives you NOTHING every year or every two years. Update iPhone 6S to 7 or buy a PSVR? I always spend my money on experiences, so the choice was easy for me.

There was a two month stretch last winter where I spent my podcast listening time in Elite Dangerous, and there's nothing quite like losing yourself in the role of a space trucker while listening to the Bombcast/Beastcast. Feels real nice!

Except, of course, that this hasn't happened.

Consoles still own AAA. Just ask CD Project Red, who couldn't make the Witcher 3 without going multiplat by their own admission.

The one counter point I have to your "Japanese companies discussion" is persona 5. I expect this to be a huge worldwide release and to do quite well in the home comapny and I doubt it will have removed many of the Japanese sensibilities - now how many of them will make it through "translation which has become localization" I don't know. I hope most myself.

So can you give your mail here so we can contact you? To the guy thinking about going to school one would hope going to the school would MAKE you good. If not - maybe choose a different school.

I also really really find hilarious the guy who I considered the biggest console/Nintendo fanboy not only talking nice about sega (I mean do you have a Sonic poster hidden somewhere in a frame) and basically telling people to get computers..

While it seems like the PC is the platform of choice for gamers, it's dramatically lost its non-gamer userbase. Anyone who isn't a gamer has either already moved to phones and tablets or they will be in the next 5-10 years. Desktop PCs will continued to be used by professionals in offices and such. People using desktop PCs personally is probably already nearly 100% gamers.

It's the platform of choice for gamers that like playing on a PC. I, and many others, still prefer a console to a PC for gaming.

I still keep my trinitron hooked up with my ps2 in a corner of my room. Once a year or so I'll go through and play the Dark Cloud games and rogue galaxy. Ps2 games still look better on a crt screen, and the emulation of those games on the psn versions is awful.

I have to disagree with Jeff on the decline of the console over the next 10 years. Unless PCs, over the next 10 years, become cheaper and you can get one for under $400 consoles will continue to sell. Yes PCs look and run better if you have an $800+ gaming rig. A$399 PC will look like crap compared to a PS4 or XBox 1.

Personally, I think this is the worst time for video games. Whenever I see things posted by people on whatever gaming site or Youtube comments section, it's almost 100% negative. From someone mocking another because they play games on an Xbox instead of a PS4, or on a console instead of on a PC. Or even other trivial things like if someone prefers inverted controls, playing games with a control pad instead of a mouse and keyboard. It's endless.

People stating opinion as fact is another thing that I think are ruining the image of the game player. Jeff says Shenmue is a terrible game. Fine, that's his opinion, but to say the people who do like the game are wrong is just absurd.

It's things like this that make me question why I play games. At the end of the day, it's entertainment. Nothing more, nothing less.

Yeah, I think consoles will actually get even more in vogue in teh next ten years. There is a lot of information PC gamers "just know" after being a PC gamer for awhile, but what such gamers take for granted is that knowledge.

A plug & play system will likely always be of interest to the many gamers. There will be no point where PC gaming comes over the hump and takes over. Just as 108 years after the Model T 99% of people still don't fix their own cars, there are people who don't care to diagnose a gaming PC is having or why.

"...it is basic tech...why can't you fix your own car, dude?!"

For a lot of PC gamers they don't understand they do have a blind spot of why consoles are popular because PS seems so easy. There likely will always been a vast majority of games who want to plug a system in a wall, plug it into the latest display and download or put in a disc.

The slow down of Moore's Law won't help PC at all in this fight:
The other issues is the pace of PC innovation is slowing...ist slowing a lot. Intel has gone from "Tick-Tock" innovation that it was able to maintain for decades to a "Tick-tick-tock" pace. Soon that pace of innovation will be "Tick-Tick-Tock-Tock", where years will go by under one type of processor. It is hard for a $400 PC to blow the doors off a $400 console when innovation is slowing down so much. Or rather when innovation comes at a steeper price. In a few years you might ONLY blow the door off a $400 console with a $600 PC, at which point does that even count? It has been cheap to blow teh door off a console, soon it might not be that cheap.
