@super_machine: the moon (and the Mun) is tidally locked to the Earth (Kerban). It doesn't matter how much you time warp, they will always be on the dark side or light side, whichever they land on.

@boss_zsiga: That's not how orbits work. The mun is tidally locked to Kerbin, not the sun. Both sides get sun, but only one is visible from Kerbin.

Well during a solar eclipse the moon is right between you and the sun. The backside (from your viewpoint) of the moon is bathing in sunlight at that point but you can only see the "darkside", the opposite is true during a full moon.

Oh man, they really tortured themselves in this one. Kerbin return requires one full slowing orbit max, sometimes none.

I'm envisioning a lot of thick-rimmed glasses and cigarette ashes on the floor of the BEAST ground control, and that's just Austin continually being frustrated at Vinny's maneuvers.

That's why they call him Austin "The Aerobreaker" Walker.

On that note, is this the best way to go about aerobreaking or is it something where you can drain off speed much faster? I'm sure they could have dipped more earlier, but I understand their worries entirely.

@rethla: Although it would take a very long time, eventually the "dark side" would be lit by the sun. The tidal lock means that from the perspective of the earth, we are always looking at the same side of the moon. As the earth and moon orbit the sun, eventually all sides of the moon will be exposed to the sun or it's reflection off of the earth. http://www.yalescientific.org/2015/05/mythbusters-is-there-really-a-dark-side-of-the-moon/ This article explains it more articulately than I can.

@robowitch: Most people hit between 20k to 40k on Kerbin. Just dont aim directly at the planet and you'll be fine.

Edit: If you're coming in from an extra planetary orbit you have to be way more careful like what they were doing here.

Awesome job to the Giant Beast crew for doing what looks impossible to my simple brain. That fucking next episode teaser though..holy shit. This song always plays at the end of my DDP Yoga workouts but it feels weirdly apropos for what you guys have accomplished over the course of several weeks of trying. DDP always knew you guys could do it.
