Metal Gear Scanlon: 3: Part 12

I've never played these games, and I don't think I ever will but I am now a huge fan of metal gear due to this series.

By far the best chase sequence in any Metal Gear game (unless you're hunting for kerotans).

And I've said it before but I'll say it again, Volgin is the best villain in MGS.

It's pretty hilarious how overpowered the shagohod is. It survived a huge C3 on liquid fuel explosion, getting blown up on a bridge, and multiple RPG hits.

Drew's skill at fighting Volgin, easily my least favorite boss in that game, was, ahem...shocking.

Oh, I know. But you gotta get hype for that shit, man!

Also, @danryckert totally missed a fun secret about EVA's survival viewer. If you press R1 or whatever it is to go to her x-ray view and then hit some button to open her history, you'll get a nice surprise.

Drew that was amazing! Very well handled for such a crazy episode.

To anyone who is only experiencing Metal Gear Solid with this series you should really try picking this up in the HD collection even though you're seeing the story, there's so much that you're not experiencing by not being in the seat Drew is in now. It's great.

Aw, now I have to buy a PS3 and get MGS4, then beat it before they start playing it.

@danryckert @drewbert please tell me you guys will livestream the finale like you've done in the past for these! MGS3 is probably my favorite in the series. Also, I really want to see you guys talk in detail about this one as well as its relation to the other Metal Gear games you've played throughout this series in a retrospective sense.
Also... I hope you'll forgive me for yelling at my computer scream to shoot the treads. <-note : this little bit is only a spoiler for those about to watch this episode, not a spoiler for Drew / Dan :)

Ha, you could really see Dan struggling while Drew fired rocket after rocket at everywhere on the tank except the treads. Probably only one more episode :(

So, this has to be the best turret sequence in the history of videogames, doesn't it? I cannot think of a better one. Only one that even comes close is the underwater bit in Gears of War 3, but that was just because of how goddamned amazing it looked.

Y'know, when I originally played it (spoilers for the rest of the game) by the time EVA got hurt falling off the bike I figured she was done for. This being a prequel made me especially confident that there was no way that she was gonna survive this game. I was pretty pleased that I turned out to be wrong.

I hope Dan knows about and tells Drew that there is an easter egg when Snake salutes The Boss at the cemetery. There's a secret first-person perspective shot during that cutscene. I'm pretty sure the game doesn't prompt you to hit the R1 button during that bit.

This was a fantastic episode! It seems like Wednesday will be our finale to Metal Gear Scanlon 3, and it leads me to wonder about Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops and how that will fit in with Drew's Metal Gear experience. This was the PSP game that came out in-between MGS3 and MGS4, and seems to be the most forgotten game of the series. It was in Portable Ops that the, "New recruits over different Wi-Fi access points," became a thing and in most Bomb-crew Metal Gear-ruminations it is incorrectly associated with Peace Walker.

Giant Bomb has demonstrated an ability to capture PSP games in the past, but I know it would kind of be a big ask for Drew to play through Portable Ops before moving on to MGS4. Therefore I am led to ask the, "Metal Gear Fanlons," of the Giant Bomb communtiy for this; a super-cut of the Ashley Wood cut-scenes of Portable Ops and pertinent in-game events from Portable Ops, that might serve as an epilogue to Metal Gear Scanlon 3. This may already exist on youtube, but I doubt that it would stand up to the quality of what the Giant Bomb community could produce. This sort of thing is beyond my own capabilities, but I hope there is a Metal Gear Fanlon out there who is up to the task.

The better one would be what they do with it in Metal Gear Solid 4.

@pixelsoldier: I doubt they'll do anything with Portable Ops. It isn't a Kojima game, isn't fondly remembered by many people, and its stance in the canon is pretty ambiguous since Kojima has stated only certain elements are canon (not mentioning which specifically) and Peace Walker kind of dismisses it as crap in the opening cutscene. I don't think you get much more out of MGS4's story having experienced PoOps than you do having not, at best Dan should just read the wikipedia plot summary and regurgitate it to Drew like he kind of did with the MSX games. Calling to the Night is a pretty fantastic song though.

Also as a side note I really hate Gray Fox's portrayal in PoOps. I'm hoping he appears in Phantom Pain and they just retcon everything about "Null".

Didn't realize people actually liked that turret sequence. I guess it is directed very well inside the base, but man does it go on for way too long. Also, it's a turret sequence, and even with MGS being one of my favorites series, turret sequences just are no fun for me.

This was a great episode, not only because it features one of the best chase sequences in all of gaming (second to MGS4) but because Drew executed everything pretty well.

I'm at the edge of my seat for the finale. Drew will have to press H one last time.

Man, I just ran around waving a hanky in Volgin's face and it wasn't nearly as hard at this; guess probably because I didn't have any guns out.

Oh wow. It takes you all the way back to the first phase of the fight if you die. This fucking game lol.

Is it just me or the does the game audio for the past handful of episodes feel balanced to the left a bit more? So pumped for the last episode! Not really looking forward to MGS4 that much though. Worst game of the series, though still a lot of fun.

Drew's no gonna like the next sequence. Don't know if he can even Rambo it. Although you can just b-line it with Eva if you know where to go.

Great episode though. Nothing seemed to much of a problem for Drew. Glad Dan clarified the don't-equip-guns thing for the first Volgin fight. I usually just take him on with CQC. Same with The Boss.

I sorta hope they do PW next instead to continue the Big Boss story.

And Portable Ops is so irrelevant to be honest, the only important thing that happens happens at the very end. And even that stuff is communicated through tapes etc in PW.

@TechnoSyndrome Not to mention that Null's boss battles were pretty underwhelming. Not that you would want them to be overwhelming with on the PSP system which makes third person shooters really difficult having no second analogue stick.

@time_muffin I actually think it's more impactful to not do the R1 thing for that scene, so actually see how Big Boss is feeling in that moment. I wouldn't put it past Drew to be confused at first by what is happening if he presses R1 then.

I know that action scene is meant to be cool, but I really wish MGS never turned out to be like that. I know MGS1 was ridiculous in many ways, but for the time it felt as grounded in reality as a game could be. It felt like Die Hard and the newer games are like Die Hard 3, they are totally over the top.
