Ugh, I am not looking forward to all of the comments bitching about Metal Gear Solid 4 in the Metal Gear Scanlon 4 series.

Hey, we won't be able to say that Drew's playing it wrong, because he won't be interacting with it very much.

This game is immensely more fun if you actually learn to play it. It's not Drew's fault, because the game just doesn't seem interested in explaining all the cool stuff you can do.

For example:

- You can lean left/right/up in first person view

- You can "aim" in third person view, and mow down enmies if you're caught

- You can "freeze" the enemies (and move around them in aim 3rd person view)

- you can CQC/Grab enemies, then throw them down and freeze them

also, my favourite:

- You can CQC/Grab an enemy and execute a Cig Spray/Napkin attack to put them to sleep

copy&paste from the previous video, sorry

How much you wanna bet they don't start MGS4 until after E3, though? Which is a shame, cause I want to see a game that is actually maybe good? Also the 90 minute cutscenes. Get the popcorn.

If you want to see a game that is actually maybe good in the MGS franchise, MGS 4 is not the one to look forward to.

But...it was one of the two finalists in GOTY for whatever year that was!

MGS 4 is probably the best playing of the games up until Ground Zeroes, because it has more modern and sensible controls. So in that regard it's fine. However, it is in the unenviable position of having to both explain the MGS world post-MGS2 as well as explain fucking everything hat has been brought up in the MGS series up to that point. So of course the end result is a game that, while controlling well, is a goddamn mess in terms of everything else. If people thought MGS 2 was out there, MGS 4 elevates it by turning the bullshit up to a new level. Long, long strings of boring cutscenes that exist only to explain nothing in the most boring way possible, characters being driven through the mud, and the worst narrative in the series. And the narratives have never been great so MGS 4 really lowered that bar.

There are some okay moments in MGS 4. The first chapter is actually really cool. But holy shit it is a chore of a game.

The cure system is so dumb. It completely kills the momentum and intensity of the bossfights having to dig out bullets and rub ointment on wounds.

At least it'll be more bitching about the game, and not bitching about Drew and Dan.

@darkbeatdk Or you could just wait until after the fight to cure yourself.

I replayed MGS4 last month for the first time in 4 years and I completely disagree with you. It's an incredible game that deserves every accolade it got. The only thing I found "bad" about it was the framerate and the shooting is a little too slow.

I never knew the original camera was so awesome like that! I specifically waited for subsistence so I had no reason to switch. I cracked up waaayyy too much at that, it was also really cool.

My problem with MGS 4 is largely its narrative and how the later chapters are structured. The game opens strong and then it falls off a cliff while at the same time turning a series with flimsy narratives and weak characters into a series with a narrative as solid as wet paper with characters having conclusions that are as unearned as the story leading up to them.

There's one great moment in the game and it is only so effective because it is fanservice.

MGS 4 deals largely in fanservice, but it's service that you want to send back to the chef because it's undercooked.

Thank God Dan insisted on basic camera for that sequence, there have been plenty of fights I just intuitively could tell were more difficult in 3D (I've never played Subsistence), particularly the Fury fight. Having defined lanes from a specific perspective in that fight is so helpful.

As for the rest of the stuff I read in these comments, this chase sequence is amazing (and since I've never played MGS3 in anything other than a single sitting, it's very cathartic to experience after a fairly long, slow, methodical burn...when playing MGS3 for yourself instead of web content), it's a shame Drew only just now realized every boss in these games is video games to the UTMOST degree (and I'm not sure he realized EVERY boss behaves that way), and I really enjoyed the change of pace with the Eva segment every time I played the game.

But I also always tried to get the most out of Metal Gear, and would often call everyone in my codec every time I entered a new room let alone new area or when I acquired new gear.

So glad I saved this episode for tonight, only an hour and a half wait for the finale!

There's no reason to ever use the Cure menu during a boss fight. Curing doesn't restore health; it only reduces the red part of your health bar (which happens from the right, NOT the left). Health regeneration is so slow, even with full stamina, it's not going to help you during a boss battle. Curing is for the open world segments *in between combat*.

During the Volgin fight when Drew was curing every 5 seconds, it didn't help him one bit. It only extended his time with Volgin.

I found the MGS4 controls and general action awful and convoluted when I played it ~5 years ago. The fact that they're 'better' than the controls in previous MGS games is hardly a compelling argument.

I think the likes of 2 and 3 hold up far better today since they get a more generous allowance for being 'old'.

Man, 42:25 is the coolest. But when those horns come in at 58:07, that's when I went "I fucking love Metal Gear Solid 3, god dammit."

And of course.... hulking, fast nuke tank comes at Drew. "Maybe a grenade...."

Yeah, you nailed it. Those are the things Drew could've done with knowing.

Sigint sounded a bit unclear when he talked about Volgin.

"Watch out for Volgin's sharkattack!"

No, really! You sort of hear that! >_<'

Haven't watched Metal Gear Scanlon 3 yet, but I got to the big sequence shown in the last part of this video today and immediately came here to make sure Drew used the original camera. One of the coolest action set pieces ever.
