I really don't understand how anyone can stand playing these games. Of course, I have a really low tolerance for cheap comic relief, especially when it involves bodily functions.

I feel like you guys have done yourselves a HUGE disservice by trying to play MGS in a way that makes for a more viewer friendly series.

MGS is a game series that rewards slow methodical play, extensive reading of instruction manuals and in game text, and the kind of player who prepares as much as possible before taking the first step into a dangerous area.

The game is SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED to punish the kind of play that Drew brings to the game.

As an example, I would usually read about 30-60 minutes of text in the manual and game menus before even starting a new game.

I disagree completely with all of this.

It can all be true if you are PLAYING the game, but WATCHING is a completely different thing. The bolded part does not sound even remotely entertaining for example. How many parts do you think it would be if Drew spent up to an hour reading text and listening to codecs? I do agree some of Drew's tactics are a little cringeworthy but it is HIGHLY entertaining and that's the most important aspect that these guys focus on.

And Dan, PLEASE keep Drew from gunning down the militia! Act 2 can be so much fun if you are on their side. They can help you out considerably if you are. Just as a small example, there is a section where you will come across a militia commander and two troops trying to sneak across a field. If you are friendly with them, you can actually join them and if you follow the commander's signals, he will indeed get you across the area without being detected! Of course, none of this will happen if Drew keeps gunning down the militia since they will be effectively be losing the war against the PMC army in Act 2 by having Snake kill them all. :(

Dan's Mind : "I'm having a heart attack alone and the government sends in a chopper to save me"

Reality: Government sits back and laughs as you die alone

No wonder Dan got bored with 1984. Totally missed the point all together

I love that cutscene introducing the B&B Corps. They made an awesome trailer out of it with some of Drebin's dialogue over the top. I remember it being the one that made me super excited for MGS4.

@drewbert@unastrike@danryckert: Today's Tip: During the briefing sections, you can use the d-pad up and down to raise and lower MKII's camera to look at tables and stuff. Try hitting the remote with his attack when you get the chance, during one of the next briefings... maybe something fun will happen!

Why does Dan keep spoiling stuff? The fact that Johnny doesn't have the SOP nanomachines was a big reveal towards the end of the game. Why would he ruin that? Same thing with revealing that Sunny is Olga's child. Just let the game tell him.

Perhaps spoiler tagging major spoilers in the comments is an idea, even if Dan has already made mention of them. Drew reads the comments, certainly. The saving grace is Dan just just casually mentions them offhand which doesn't stick Drew with any idea of gravity. It may be in his mind now but he won't be dwelling on them as big ideas until the game brings them into focus. But then, he's probably already thinking about things too much now with everyone saying Dan spoiled anything major. I should spoiler this too. Damnit!

The speed at which you guys are moving is giving me anxiety. I still need to play Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes!

P.S. The entire Akiba storyline might be one of the most eye-rollingly terrible nerd wank fantasy aspects of MGS4.

Not really a comment on how Drew plays, but the excuses are nearly Brad-level. Otacon tells you very early that neither side is your enemy, he just shot the first guy he saw and his buddies didn't care for that.

The whole "listening and paying attention to cues" hasn't gotten much better, but he did figure out what the ring around Snake is, even before Dan; that's progress!

Dan said the comments are full of people bitching - after fumbling through 3 MGS games, I feel like Drew is actually excelling at MGS4; it might be because it's the most shooter-y of them all, but also because he's internalized some of the rules.

This Show has become one of my very favorite things now, 27-7. Sit down with Dan,(the Dan that really wears well with me) and Drew. And have Drew play another episode of MGS4.

It's both funnier than shit ,and yet just has so much of it's own thing going. Even if Nano-Machines still explain everything.

Have fun Dan and Drew. We are in biblical times.

He goes under the impression that they're things you should know about the new characters in this game, but they're things you know because you've completed this game. :( It's cool though, Dan commented on this video and said he'd chill with the spoilers.

I think the part of Metal Gear Scanlon that bugs me the most is how Dan/Drew are about the game telling you stuff. Three of the four games came out in the era where games didn't tell you stuff and you were expected to read the manual that came with the game. 2008 was about when manuals disappeared all together but MGS4 actually still has a sizable manual to explain the game mechanics. The crazy mechanics of MGS have always been documented. Stop being weird about that being spoilers.

I know MG Scanlon has been about going in blind storywise but I wish that didn't extend to the gameplay too. People used to read manuals when games had them.

+1,000,000.

I've been saying this since the very beginning of MGS3, but I'm pretty much ready to give up at this point. They are just bound and determined to not know how to make Snake properly do things.

@supgaiz said:

I don't think Dan really understands the concept of a spoiler.

"Drew knows what he wants to do but know what button to press? Better not spoil him on the controls for the game!"

"Plot details that haven't been revealed yet? Better let Drew know about this stuff!"

Yep.

Drew hasn't really used stealth once this entire series but it seems to have worked... sooo great!!! Shows that mgs really doesn't have to be a stealth game if you dont want it to be.

Want to play mgs4 again, they should release the legacy collection for pc, i'd pay full 60 for that.

This x1000. I get a lot of entertainment out of Drew's fumbling with the game, and Dan's amusement, but when both dudes are baffled by shit that any player would know going in, it's less entertaining than it is frustrating. I know that Drew wants the experience of a first time player, but in 2008--although things have certainly changed since--a first time player would have read the manual (probably during the 20 minute install).

That being said, this is still my favorite feature on the site, and the reason I stay premium, so keep up the good work, duders! There's much craziness to come

Drew's psyche gauge is reminding me how well the game simulates being an old man in combat: after a bit of stressful combat its time to relax with some cup noodles and a nano machine compress, maybe have a smoke. Or if you want to be cheap about it, lay down and have a nap while listening to your iPod.

Shame the game doesn't wave the system in front of your face until act 2.

I'm not sure why Drew was so opposed to watching the mission briefing, considering it to be "outside information." Remember MGS1's mission briefing was the exact same way, tucked away in the main menu. You're supposed to watch them.

I'm always confused when I see people start up a game and they don't immediately start poking around the menus. Maybe my background in PC gaming instilled that habit (always go straight to the settings, etc).

Goddamnit Dan, stop saying stuff about the story that are clearly not meant to be known yet.

If I remember correctly, Johnny not having nanomachines is a twist in the very end game

Also Drew is not supose to know who sunny is yet

Thankfully there is so much going on Drew might not notice the fat spoilers

I have opinions on how Drew plays this game!

Like for instance, there is a complete lack of logic involved. "They were shooting at me" he says when there was no alert phase.

I mean, I resigned to the fact that this is just the way this series will be somewhere in the middle of the MGS3 play-through, but when it gets real bad, I think it can be healthy to internet-scream into the void for a little bit. Kind of like screaming into a pillow. We all know Drew isn't reading this. Nor should he, as people are quite comfortable with posting spoilers.

MGS4 was the second game in the series that I played through so I was not an "expert", but I definitely remember not having anywhere near as much trouble with the controls. No clumsy shoving a person over and over again, expecting a different result until another one drops on my head. No wasting ration after ration by making myself as easy a target as possible. I don't remember having to exert myself in some inconvenient way in order to learn how to play the game competently. Also thinking helps.

But we all know the only way forward for Drew is

I think a lot of the gameplay 'opinions' revolve around Drew not knowing the possible gameplay options available to him or how to execute them control-wise.

A lot of MGS3 was Drew wanting to be stealthy but fumbling with the controls e.g. he lacked the knowledge of how to execute hold-ups or utilise camo effectively. I have no qualms with Drew running and gunning this game if that is what he WANTS to do. I want him to play how he WANTS to. What I don't want is him resorting to mowing everyone down because he does not know controls or how to execute gameplay mechanics. Regardless I love the series and will keep watching.
