That level six room DOES have something in it, if my memory serves. You gotta like hug a wall and go behind something....

I might be making that up, though.

What?! How did Dan not know the torture keeps going if you don't find a way out?

Dan really should have told Drew that if you press the elevator button twice, it comes up immediately. (Although Drew did it without knowing).

Any ways, this was my favourite episode in the series so far. Best QTE sequence in any game.

@grillbar: Johnny Sasaki is one of Metal Gear Solid's running gags after all.

(I'm sure there is a diarrhoea pun to be made there.)

Don't worry Drew, your plaid shirts are way classier than any shirt Dan has ever worn (even though Thin Lizzy is awesome).

The thing I really love about this portion of the game is that you come out of it both physically and psychologically tortured. They put you through an ordeal that mimics the main character.

The great thing about the VR Missions is that they're great training for all the stealth techniques. Once you learn those, it's really easy to run around this base.

@pete0r: I'm not going to say that MGS has good gameplay because a lot of it just isn't fun at all. On the same token I beat MGS first time through knowing jack shit about it in under 4 hours. I'm not sure if Drew realizes that you can just run out of rooms after you sound an alarm to deactivate it. All those rooms he spends like 15+ minutes in I just ran straight through because as soon as you reach a door the whole thing resets. Plus one shot from the SOCOM will take out any guard. Taking out an entire room of guards without being spotted takes a couple seconds. I probably spent a total of 10 minutes sitting in a box during my entire playthrough.

The boss battles he is doing about average on (well except the tank battle that he nailed in 5 minutes) but my experience (and I think most people's experience) with this game is that it is basically just a boss rush. The whole stealth portions in between you just run through.

EDIT: Thought I should mention I played this game for the first time like two years ago so this is coming from someone who knew about as much about Metal Gear going into the game as Drew did and who had the same limited amount of experience with PS1 games in general.

Starting to feel a little bad for Drew, he's clearly not enjoying the game as much. I played it as a teenager but stopped at the Metal Gear REX boss fight because yeah, figuring some of the stuff that you have to do can just be so obtuse and frustrating at times. Admittedly I went on and beat MGS2 all the way through but still... it's a great game for it's time but having someone go back whose never played it can be a little alienating.

This is the most interesting content I've seen so far on this site. Your rapport is a lot of fun, and it's a game I have a lot of fondness for. This alone makes premium worth it.

Having absolutely no context for that screen shot - it looks like snake is having a fight with a very large office photo copier / printer.

Drew is a bigger man than me, I still have a tough time with the torture scene.

edit* Oh man 3 torture sequences, i doubt that Drew is a mere man...i think he is a machine. He has to be, its the only plausible way he could tap so fast.+

@screwdan: On top of that, seeing him just instantly forget information he learned no more than an hour prior is its own kind of frustrating. I'm partially watching this series because I never played MGS and want to learn about it. Ostensibly that is Drew's goal too, but he seems to pick up nothing from conversations or cutscenes. This means he keeps forgetting about or not understanding things when he would if he was simply paying a modicum of attention to what's happening.

@hassun: i'm really, REALLY looking forward to Drew's reaction to some of the endgame twists. It has occured to me that I have no idea what kind of reactionary response Drew has to that kind of thing. I've never seen him play a twist-heavy story. Hopefully, he's the shouting type. :)

Drew got screwed on that first ketchup try. The guard totally wasn't looking at him when he did it.

I actually really wanted that bomb in his items to go off to see Drew's reaction. Damn Deepthroat party pooper.

Another great episode! I'm wondering if Drew is really enjoying this run, he says he is but sometimes his face tells a different story. Also i'm curious to know if Dan has played Metal gear: Ghost babel, i hear that game is good for being non canon, what i'm saying of course Dan has played that game he is a hardcore Metal gear after all!

I played this game for the first time about 2 years ago and I felt the same way as Drew. I wanted to keep playing through the game because I really liked the story stuff but didn't like actually playing it. I think I gave up at the final boss fight. I have the HD collection though and MGS 4 which I'm looking forward to getting into after this video feature is done and hopefully the controls don't turn me off as much as the first game did.

It's crazy how much this video series has ranged from actually fun to straight up unenjoyable and frustrating to watch. This episode was very much the latter.

Yeah when this started it was my favorite content on the site. I love Drew, but man is it frustrating watching him play MGS.

I think that's what makes it fun to watch. How he finds new ways to die in every situation.

Does anyone else get the same feeling watching this as they do watching someone play a puzzle game? The most stressful parts are when Drew doesn't get what the game is asking.

My favorite part about this is that Metal Gear's story is crazy enough that the sneezy, butt-grabbing guard eventually marries Meryl.

Everyone only remembers the missile thing from Twin Snakes, but god damn I love the little things.

No Caption Provided

Absolutely! The finer details and little nuances really make the difference between the original and Twin Snakes. I'm a big fan of both games for their own reasons and get kind of down when people trash on Twin Snakes. It's a revision with 2 console generations of separation, so of course it is going to be different in some ways. People who hate it just to hate it, probably haven't given it a fair shake, or even played it at all.

Been thinking about going back and playing the Metal Gear series before Phantom Pain gets here; maybe I'll give Twin Snakes a shot...

That's what I did. I beat the PS version when it came out and this series made me want to play it again. I figured that since I had already beaten the original, I may as well play the GC version as I still have it hooked up. I liked it. I can't say it was all roses but it does look much nicer and I'm a lockers > boxes guy.

There's a lot of stuff I don't like about MGS 4 but from a control standpoint it's a huge improvement over every other entry in the series.

Edit: Not taking Ground Zeroes into account because I don't even know what the fuck this Kiefer Sutherland nonsense is.
