"It's an open world game" and "you can play how you want" but dammit Drew your playing the game wrong.I would rather watch Drew spend 1hr slowly take over a base silently than have to watch him throw 1 more grenade.Drew just plays like Dan now.

Drew should really try holding right trigger while aiming grenades so he can throw them farther it also gives it a higher arc.

Edit: I'm so glad that drew found the "A Phantom Pain" tape, that and "Behind the Drapery" were my helicopter music for most of the game until I got "Quiet's Theme" and "Sins of the Father.

It's funny that the one mechanic Jason argues with Dan about (fulton percentage changing) is also the one mechanic Dan is completely right about.

I knew about the loadout system quite early in the game. Just looked over to the right and saw the buttons next to the loadout title. That said, I never used them. I always ran shotgun/rocket launcher/WU S. Pistol for the entire game because hey, you never know when you need a rocket launcher. I'd rather have one with me when it turns out I need one instead of deploying with a sniper rifle, going "oh shit I need a rocket launcher" and then having to pay more GMP to call one down.

One song the game needed was the safety dance. That would have been pretty funny to have on the helicopter.

For someone who really likes tactical, methodic games like America's Army, Arma, and his realistic flight sims, it's kind of crazy how Drew is content to just turn this game into Call of Duty and kill everyone.

(I think it's fine for him to play how he wants, that's the beauty of the depth of the mechanics in MGSV, just saying it's interesting that HE is not even bothering to explore tactics)

I was thinking the same exact thing and I think it just comes down to the fact Drew can focus entirely on those games since he generally plays those on his free time where as with this he has to focus on the game, talk to Dan, and try to be entertaining to an audience. Maybe he would still play exactly the same if he could focus 100% on the game, I dunno, but I always just assumed it was hard to juggle all those things.

I will say though that the image of this super secret ultimate badass soldier sitting on top of a white stallion scoping out a military base 20 feet from the front gate is nothing if not entertaining. It may not be the smartest way to play, but goddamn I love watching it lol

Playing trough the game again, why could they not include side mission "stop the convoy 1-10"

basically convoy is going from point A to B, stop it.

the one story mission where you stop a convoy is the best in the game, you can play it 100 different ways.

you can use the mines in total of about 3 missions in the entire game, yet they have a research path for it.

also, drew, listen to the mission description for once before you choose a mission, it says "Y play briefing tape", at the bottom of the mission selection screen.

drew has not listened it once, and dan has not commented on it, ever.

also, you can analyze people after they are down, so frustrating watching drew analyzing everybody before shooting.

@drewbert, be advised a black sneaking suit sticks out like a sore thumb during the day. Wearing camo that allows you to blend into the terrain is advised.

There may not be an MGS3 style camo indicator, but it's an active mechanic in the game.

When I was pretty young, I did get sick for a day (only) the day after the flu shot. I just got another 3 days ago and I felt a touch off the next day, but nothing like being ill. Yes the arm gets sore, best to exercise it some after the shot, this disperses the fluid.

Prefer the shot anytime than the flu.

Until I saw the comments in this thread, I had no idea the briefing tapes weren't just the same as the spiel you get while in the helicopter heading to the mission. Played through the entire game without listening to 1 of them.

I didn't either because the first two times I listened to them it was the same exact thing they told me in the Helicopter. So I just never used them again

@drewbert Whenever a guard spots you and you go into reflex mode, you have to kill the guard that spotted you ( indications: he looks straight at you, the marker flashes). When there are two guards and you kill the guard that spotted you, the reflex mode will start over for the second guard. If you can't get rid of the guard before reflex mode ends, the entire base goes into full alert mode right after it.

(I think it's fine for him to play how he wants, that's the beauty of the depth of the mechanics in MGSV, just saying it's interesting that HE is not even bothering to explore tactics)

It's because he's formed incorrect assumptions about the mechanics of past, current, and future Metal Gear games, thinking they have arbitrary rules when really there's pretty clear-cut boundaries. I got the TPP strategy guide 'cuz why not, and there's actually hard limits on who can see you when. I'm not saying you're supposed to intuit you cannot be seen for 70 meters, and you can move without being spotted closer than 70 meters but only towards the target and not laterally, but at this point Drew has given up on ever accepting Metal Gear has ever been a fair experience, which is a shame.

We've seen every member of GB make bone-headed mistakes on camera, and I believe that there is some element of being monitored or observed. I think I'm hot fucking shit at Metal Gear, but I don't know if that would change if I was streaming, feedback or no.

I knew about the Load out options but I never used it because 1. The deployment cost never mattered much to me and 2. I used the same load out for pretty much every mission in the game except like two where I needed a machine gun. Tranq pistol, Silenced AR with magnifier and a Silenced Tranq Sniper FTW

Top Secret is one of my all time favorite movies btw =)

Didn't Dan say in this episode that episode 2 had only just gone up on the site?

This might be why Drew's not figured out overarm grenade tossing (heck, I never knew about it and I finished the game with close on 100 hours), camo and actual sneaking yet. ;)

Dan brought up "Assassin's Creeding" people off of towers after people told him it's a thing post Episode 2, so yeah, they're recording ahead and yeah, Dan is taking advice. Everybody get ready for some overarm throwin'.

@babychoochoo: @ch3burashka:

All good points, but do you get the sense he's burned out on MGS at this point? I certainly don't blame him, having played the first 4 within a year, but combine that with the fact that he's admitted to not liking open world games, and being under Dan's questionable tutelage, I can understand the apathy for not trying...or the impatient mannerisms we get every time the enormity of the game is made clear to him.

To sort of go meta here, it's almost like Drew is not taking agency in his experience, just living by Dan's words. Drew "Venom Snake" Scanlon and Dan "Kazuhira" Ryckert.

I don't think you can get burned out on a bad game, and therein lies the problem - despite the fact that this is, by all accounts, one of the best open-world games ever, Drew does not believe or trust to it to be so. The other things you mentioned (his dislike of open-world in general, Dan, etc) are all factors, but I feel like he's holding a grudge that began with MGS1.

No idea how I found loadouts so quickly, considering the amount of people that missed it. I think it was because I enjoy having a "cheap as balls" set of equipment with just base camo and some tranq guns for side ops (maximize $$$!)

Fast travel still eludes me, 70 hours in. I know the base idea of how to get it going, but just choose to deploy my fully upgraded helicopter to go between missions, because hell, I can cap GMP several times over now. Swag it up.

@ragingflower: Same here. I guess I saw 'loadout 1' and figured there must be more, which was lucky considering I'm 100hrs in and didn't know about overarming grenades and fast travel.

And making the chopper play your choons... Which I've now rectified big style and am now bombing along to Blue Monday (custom soundtrack).

Yeah, this. Would love to see him get the throw he wants in there. Also his reaction when he finds out about this. To clarify, I'm not trying to be condescending or anything. I just think he would appreicate this.

Does anyone know if there is a way to make grenades explode more quickly after throwing them? Especially the sleep grenades. They seem to take so long to go off after throwing them that the enemy has plenty of time to get out of the area.

Maybe the fuse gets less as you upgrade because I have the Grade 6 ones and troops rarely get away from them, unless there's already an alert. They mostly duck and cover and by the time they realize it's not a frag, it's ZZZ time. You can also buy a grenade launcher that does sleeping gas too. Those go off on impact.

Also, not that I'm complaining but I feel like this is going to be the longest Metal Gear Scanlon to date if the mess around with Side Ops too much. Again, not complaining. By all means, 100% it Drew! :D

Drew really should be showering more.

Showering increases your maximum health, increases your fulton recovery success rate, and increases the duration of your reflex mode.

Also, Drew NEEDS to listen to those story tapes, even if it's not on video. There's crucial story details in those, as well as a lot of really good world-building.

@danryckert As someone who has been shot, I can say that there is very little pain when it happens. Adrenalin pretty much takes care of that. However a few hours later and beyond are not fun. This may be different if being hit in the arm or somewhere fleshy, but I was struck in the head.

@drewbert@danryckert I was taught the same thing when starting to learn Japanese, but if you listen to Japanese people talking for a while, you'll notice it's not flat at all. I understand that people in Tokyo speak more flatly than folks in west Japan, where I've spent most of my time, so I may simply have a different experience from most people who have been to Japan.

@doog: And if I'm remembering right from what I talked to the pharmacist at my work about, that sickness that you feel after getting the shot is just your body's immune system spinning up. It's basically "sparring" with the dead strains, but you're not actually sick from the flu.

He should really not be so picky about who he fultons at the beginning of the game. Just put bodies in spots.
