Voicemail Dump Truck Proper Docking with Jeff and Ben

We're here to talk about things getting shut down, discuss the best year ever in gaming, and get real with some MMO customer support duties.

If you think the GIant Bombcast spends too much time talking about Not Video Games, you're going to hate this thing.

They did make huge changes to Pokemon this time, @benpack. Relatively. They added effectiveness markers to all moves and removed the need to use HMs for traversing abilities. There was a period where pokemon didn't change much but they've been streamlining it in smart ways.

I would be curious to see if they give it a fresh take on the Switch though.

With a title like this I expect this website to open up to a whole new brand of customer.

I think it is extremely hyperbolic to say there is no community in WoW anymore. In fact, the tools for community is way more. If the options in WoW are "boring, crippled, and (in the case of some classes) limited to bad experiences" or "what the game is now" I will always and forever choose "what the game is now". Every single thing the guy said in regards to, "That's not in the game anymore" made me say, "Thank God" out loud in the car.

WoW classic will be a novelity that 95% of the community doesn't touch; it will bring no real money in and I am willing to bet a bunch of people who play on private servers right now will still find stuff to complain about and will play on private servers. I am also surprised how many people online are unaware that "wow classic" is actually pre-BC patch 1.12 WoW...I've seen several people online thinking that "wow class" is Wrath of the Lich King content :|

@gannon16: I think you could make the argument for the generation compared to others but this past year seems to have had something for nearly everyone. PUBG, NieR Automata, BOTW, Mario, and Horizon have all seemingly been great and serious GOTY contenders just at a glance.

Don't know that many people would agree with you about this year not being great.

Is half this file silence? I'm waiting for some CD-style hidden track to start and it's not happening.

But it will, right?

There was an issue some extra silent time stuck on the end, but I've updated the original file.

I have played WoW since launch, playing less between expansions, coming back for new stuff, etc. I still talk to some of the people I played with pre-BC, and even they tend to admit, the 'peak' was Lich King. The thing is, we also agree that its not something Blizzard can bring back.

The memories we have of that expansion was something that existed because of a combination of factors. The game had progressed to where Blizzard had mostly sorted class balance - that is, most classes had at least two viable ways to play, DPS and something else, sometimes just a different flavor of DPS. Dual-spec existed, making it easier to change roles. The rep grinds and absurd attunements of BC were gone. Wrath had its grinds, but they were much more reasonable, not required for raiding, and you didn't have to play Simon with crystals.

But more importantly it was community. The game didn't give us those memories, the people we played the game with did. Wrath pre-dungeon finder was the best WoW for me, because we had a tight knit group and you could reliably do dungeons within your guild without having to face the pitfalls of LFG chat.

When dungeon finder came along, suddenly it was easy to find a group. But...it killed the atmosphere. Nobody wanted to form groups when the random finder could just teleport you in. Suddenly you were with random people, some of them were jerks. Sometimes the tank would quit after the first boss because that was the one that dropped the loot he wanted. Sometimes people would wipe the group because the rogue wanted to do some obscure fight-skip glitch that nobody had mentioned beforehand. Dungeon finder, while good for loot efficiency, was absolutely the thing that turned the game from Wrath WoW, into modern WoW, where everything is a big race to maximize loot per hour, and nobody talks to anyone outside of your guild raid time.

In closing, I think WoW Classic is largely going to be a case of "why would anyone subject themselves to this?" for new players, and we old codgers are going to face the reality of moving away from our childhood home and getting jobs, and realizing that even if we go back, it will never be the way it was.

@polishhill: I need to look into other hobbies I think. I've found almost every game I've played this gen to be very monotonous and boring.

@gannon16: :(

A little game vacation might help. I'll occasionally take like 9 months off Netflix and find when I return I can cherry pick just the best stuff and never feel like I missed out. Wonder if that might help in games for you. Though with games as a service I think some genres are going to be baking in monotony for a while.

No matter what I hope you find your bliss duder.

I heard Shogo! such a fantastic game. Being able to choose your own mech, seeing the size difference between mech combat and on-foot levels. It was just really neat. It was also the first game i ever played that had a multiple endings. I was so confused why a hard time-based last level didn't show up in my 2nd playthrough, took me a while to realize the game had different endings.

That WOW conversation was fun to listen to.

The first NieR is actually quite good. I recommend people give it a try, while the combat might not be the greatest, in terms of story and weirdness with genre shifting it trumphs Automata.

@polishhill: This is how I treated football. Took like a 3 year break after all the rape and murder and the NFL being okay with child abuse as long as he run good, now I'm watching again.

Partly because the Kaep shit is so entertaining in exposing super racists backpedaling.

When talking about the X's place in the market and whether to recommend it, I feel like Jeff isn't thinking about the difference between a console and a PC sometimes, they're very different propositions. The X has all the appeal of a console (mainstream appeal, closed system, standardised hardware and software experience, plug n play and general ease of use, designed for the living room etc), with the power of a good PC but without it's equivalent good PC price tag. Spend a couple of hundred bucks more than an X to get a good PC and you still have a PC, I don't think your average gamer even considers the PC as an equivalent option. Or should!

Dude that text adventure bit! and then the little Zelda reference in that desert dungeon. The first Nier definitely has roughhh gameplay and the side stuff is pretty bad but damn if it doesn't have some awesome moments throughout that are worth the ride.

@dan_citi: I especially love the survival horro section. Sure, the game is a bit rough and having to beat the entire game again, get all weapons, just to get the true ending is annoying. But I still consider it to be better than Automata. <3
