This game is incredibly creepy.

EDIT: Oh, no, it's just the way Dan is playing it like a sociopath. Cool.

What every customer of Dan says whilst watching him design their home
What every customer of Dan says whilst watching him design their home

There is something strangely depressing about watching these animated little characters attempt to be happy in this hellhole of a game/ environment.

This actually has all the stuff I liked about Animal Crossing without all the chores that I eventually get tired of doing. I built 4 houses in New Leaf just so I could decorate each one. While I do wish the game did a better job at scoring, I think the game is probably very lenient for younger players. For older players, it's probably not about the game challenging you, but about you decorating something that pleases you.

This looks like Animal Crossing without any of the rewards of playing it :/
A shame, I spent well over a hundred hours on New Leaf.

Man, Animal Crossing NL was already limited in things you could do and this seems even more barren.

This should have been an expansion to New Leaf to give you something to do when you're done with all your other tasks.

This game is for people who like designing homes. It's called Happy Home Desginer. If you enjoy making homes and do your best at it, you're going to have a good time, if you half ass every house of course you're not gonna think there's much to this game.

Just like the core animal crossing series, you have to make your own fun for the most part.

While I agree that I wish there could have been a little more to do, and designing a connected town would have been fantastic (I'm disappointed that it's not in this) I'm still going to enjoy this game immensely. Because designing homes is something I've always loved doing in animal crossing.

Of course Dan's town would turn out to be a weird hell dimension. This is basically the Silent Hill game that never got made.

This costs $40.

When Nintendo looks back and asks why the Wii U failed, one of the things they can point out is that they charge too damn much for games that would be $10 on Steam or XBL/PSN, and both this and Captain Toad are fine examples of this.

This is not a Wii U game and Captain Toad was not a full price game ($30 I think?). The Wii U's failure has nothing to do with software prices.

I guess they were just going for a pure sandbox creation tool, or weren't willing to spend the money on making it more than that, but it's really weird that there isn't even an attempt to add in challenge or resource management. They could have added in some judging capacity beyond having X required items, requirement to learn and guess what your client wanted or what would fit their style, ability to spend to unlock new items, budgeting in building new homes, or really anything to add actual challenge.

It's really weird that veering off the requested decoration style does nothing. What exactly IS this game? What is the hook?

Probably the latter. I doubt Dan has watched it. If it's something you would have expected him to watch as a film major, then he probably hasn't.

He mentioned Glengarry Glen Ross on the Bombcast this week. That reference was 100% intentional.

I somehow found this quicklook hilarious. Dan's crazy hospital where you have to shimmy to get into the other rooms and random hamsters that don't do anything had me cracking up.

This game might not look great, but I had fun watching Dan design things (or talk about how dumb babies are).

This seems like the kind of game that would benefit from a player with lots of creativity and imagination, similar to Super Mario Maker. I've seen screenshots of homes made and they look amazing, but sharing would be the biggest feature for me. Like I'd have fun making a home, but I'd get more out of it by sharing it online or showing friends. New Leaf, on the other hand, kept me driven by hunting for fish and furniture I wanted.

The game seems charming as hell, though. Plus, I hope some of these features make it into the next main Animal Crossing game (like decorating your lawn). Ah well.
