Quick Look: Battlefield 4

All in the game, right? What I mean is the content, it is all inside Battlefield 4.

I don't like to contradict Jeff but this game is ugly.

Yeah the PS4 version is pretty close to the PC in terms of performance and graphics. Digital Foundry did a comparison between them:

Wow the singleplayer looks just outright bad.

Which was the case for Battlefield 3 as well, but jeez.

I rarely buy a shooter 99% for the multiplayer, but Battlefield every few years is my exception.

Every now and then I fall apart.

Having beat the singleplayer I wouldn't say it's bad, just by-the-books.

It doesn't do anything spectacular, but it isn't outright bad like the Battlefield 3 campaign was.

@chazzlabs: No one plays this for the singleplayer. And people in the military tend to swear a lot, read Generation Kill (or watch the HBO series) for an example.

Apparently it isn't an optional download like it was with BF 3. It's installed when you install the game to the HDD so I guess the game really does look that shitty on consoles.

That constant simple-minded bickering from your team mates sure makes you feel like you're in the company of top men. Jeez.

Of course nagging from team mates is a constant in all multiplayer games; and now also in the campaign.

Then again maybe I'm nagging right now. On the internet even.

You saying that isn't representative just because you dislike Rolling Stone (is it because it's liberal, or because it's mainly a music magazine, or a bit of both) makes me feel like I'm in the comment section of Yahoo News or somethin. You need to try better than that.

You can criticise that book for maybe being too harsh on the leaders, but from what I've read, all the marines heavily featured in the book has praised its portrayal of how their part of the invasion of Iraq went.

Oh it was a really cool, clever reference. Really a shame you didn't get it.

I'm about halfway through the campaign, and I'm definitely less angry with this one. Some nice set piece moments but the campaign is just boring. I don't think they should get rid of the campaign as it's a nice way to show off that face tech, but mostly I just want to see the dudes from Bad Company return. Make the campaign be fun again.

Good to see Michael K. Williams, aka Omar, aka Chalky getting more work. Love that dude.

The book was written by a Rolling Stone reporter who was embedded with a battalion for two months. The T.V. programme is by David Stone who wrote The Wire, Homicide and the Corner. He is a guy who knows what he is talking about and cares about accuracy. David Simon spent a year on the streets and a year with the police when writing his books about Baltimore. To me that sounds like a partnership which is going to produce something pretty trustworthy.

I am waiting to see how the new consoles and those versions of the game pan out first, since my PC can't run it and current console versions don't even look serviceable anymore.

The BF4 part tripped me up

Watching the Quick Look, 30 minutes in and they haven't shot a single guy. What's up with that? Am I missing something here?

Right yeah. If I wanted to make a drama that managed to be realistic and entertaining those guys would be pretty high on my list.

Battlefield have now officially passed over into COD:MW/MOH:WF territory. BF3 almost went there, now it's all the way. Already asked for a refund on Origin. First BF game I won't own.

I miss Battlefield 2142.

Man, the campaign looks ROUGH. Don't get me wrong, the game's gorgeous, but it just looks terrible to experience.

For anyone interest, In the server browser when you apply for a search, hold down the "End Page" Key for 5 seconds and it will generate a lot more search results. Then simply press "Home" and to back to the top and sort by player base. You'll have a much higher server count.

This Quicklook did go all pear shape though which is a shame because I've really been enjoying this game. Interesting to see if from a perspective that isn't as biased as mine but they missed out on covering a lot. Surprised Jeff didn't really go into the multiple color blindness modes at all for example.

45 minutes into the quicklook, I can count the number of actual enemies I've seen Jeff shoot at on one hand. The lighting is garbage. Also, when he was going to the Valkyrie by boat, the water effects were all terrible.

Yep, the characters and story seem mildly interesting but everything else in the campaign looks super rough.

Seeing something as amazing yet disappointing as this... it makes me want to solve the AI conundrum. The game looks breathtaking, but the offline gameplay is just so broken. Spend a little bit more CPU calculations on making the characters believable. That also includes the animations, I suppose. When a game looks as breathtaking as this does, the characters animating in an unnatural way compared to their motivations and voice acting will really take you out of the experience.

I guess complaining that a game with a bloated budget should spend more money is a poor idea, but maybe allocate more of that money to those areas for a more well-rounded experience.
