According to my former teacher, Japanese were in fact raised to be shameful of their actions in the war in the post-war period. It's just that this has lessened as time has passed, to the point where it's just something that's never talked about nowadays. Although China and Korea do their best to constantly remind Japan of their shameful actions. The people who made 1942 were probably raised during this period of post-war contrition.

This isn't really a direct answer to Brad's question about post-war Japan, but as part of SCAP Japanese movies were censored for a while such that America & post-war relations had to be portrayed in a positive light. Ozu's Late Spring actually does a good job of subverting this pro-American mandate by inserting sarcastic (or incongruous) ads for Coke across Japanese landscapes, and by having a character who's gotten ill from being overworked in an American camp (though you need to infer that's how she got sick, it isn't overt). I don't know a ton about that period of Japanese film, but it's easy to extrapolate the effects of that strict, pro-American cultural influence and how that might inform how the Japanese have come to view the war.

I wasn't around when these games were hot shit but it seems to me that there weren't that many different genres of games then, it's either platformers or shoot 'em ups

We're talking arcade games here, these were games made to be played in an arcade, they were designed with high scores and making people put in more credits in mind, the closest comparison to today would probably be facebook games, which also have some similar mechanics in place, though few seem to have figured out it could be a pretty good thing if the games are also kinda fun to play. There were plenty of genres back then too - by 1983-84, the RPG genre was well established on home computers, with classics such as Wizardry, The Bard's Tale and Ultima. There were text adventure games/visual novels, and the first proto-typical first person shooters had started to pop up, such as Maze War and numerous clones of that, though they were mostly played on university mainframes or networked office machines, and the same was true of the precursors to MMORPG's - MUDs, or Multi-User Dungeons. There were also plenty of racing games on both home computers and in the arcades.

While there are technically more genres around today, popular games are just like back then limited to around 2 or 3 very formulaic genres - today it's modern military first person shooters, third person cover based shooters and MOBAs, back then it was platformers, vertical or horizontally scrolling shoot 'em ups and Pac-Man like maze games.

Sorry Drew! It was fun, but mega short. If I recall I had it a seven, but they knocked it down a bit, because yeah, super short.

Still, I enjoyed it. That was the same summer of Bionic Commando Rearmed, Castle Crashers and Geometry Wars 2, so it was a good lead in.

If I recall the earliest podcast he was on, he said he was responsible for mocking up a lot of the little achievement graphics/images you see in the menus.

The one reason why I preferred the C64 version of 1942 was that the devs totally ripped off the music from 633 Squadron for use in the game.

"Striker 1945" thanks guy. I been looking for that game for the longest. With all these 1945 talks and I clearly remembering the 1945 game I played is nothing like it at all. I was starting to believe that I just remember the game wrong.

Man, really enjoyed the discussion about the games and the ROM talk in general. Good stuff gents. I was glued to the entire thing. Not a bad sendoff for the collection.
