Quick Look: Dark Souls II

Wait, Brad restarted Dark Souls and only made it to Blighttown after already being up to the Capra Demon on the charity stream? Strange.

And so it has begun

I know you guys are not cool because if you were you would have been excited to run into the character Pate because he is voiced by Peter Serafinowicz who is one of the funniest people alive on this earth.

Yeah, I am actually right with you. Reading the comments on any of ERs is an exercise in frustration. So many people thinking they're so much smarter just because they looked up a fusion guide or have played Chrono Trigger dozens of times.

I, like anyone, get a bit frustrated with the GB guys when they blatantly miss key gameplay mechanics or clues because they simply weren't reading or paying attention, but for the most part I feel like the majority of videos portray very typical gaming experiences by normal players.

Thanks for the Quick Look! It was quite fun and gave me a decent impression of the game.

The one big negative I seemed to see in the QL was that it appears they turned off part of their lighting system. Like, they made a big deal in the run up to the game's release about its lighting, but a lot of these areas look quite different without the stark shadow effects.

Looks like they may have knocked down the lighting for the sake of performance. Which, you know, is nice in a way, because it's putting gameplay before visuals. But one of the big visual differences they trumpeted leading up to the game was its amazing lighting, and it is disappointing that they seem to have tossed it out so late into development.

I'm now very curious how the DSII PC version will look. I may wait until that's out to jump in. Quite excited to play it eventually. :)

Not even going to watch this. Why spoil myself. Then again waiting until end of April wont be easy considering I'm sure all the talk about it on the podcast. Damn.

This game is brand new the other games weren't, I asked Vinny on his Tumblr after Load our Last Souls ended and he said:

I don’t know about streaming a bunch of DS2 like this at first, but a launch day marathon might be fun.

Don't count on them doing another Breaking Brad/Load our Last Souls so soon after launch.

I'm seeing a difference in those rolls. The animation looks the same, but one seems a bit slower (to me).

@indieslaw: The general rule of thumb for Dark Souls is 'if it works for them, it can work for you too' so I'm going to say yes! :P I remember in one of the first trailers you see the player running past enemies and as one takes a swing at him it looks like it just does a glancing blow off his armour. SO MUCH TO FIND OUT!

I cant wait for this to be released on Steam. Got my preorder in, now im just watching the clock. April is ways off. :(

Man, I was really hoping Vinny would be driving this not Brad.... bleeeh.. I'm not a fan of his play style.

Sometimes thats exactly what you want, and sometimes it's not enough. I went from really excited in Dark Souls to feeling that it is a bit samey by the end. Still, it's a very unique experience and I'm looking forward to experiencing it again.

I really want to watch this quick look, and the continued adventures of Brad and Vinny, but I won't before I have the game and I'm at least past the first quarter of it. :( This wait is almost as torturous as the wait for the actual game.

Looks great. Think I'm gonna grit my teeth and hold out for the PC version though... I waited about 10 months for Dark Souls on PC, I can handle a month and a half, I think. I do have a PS3, but I hear the framerate in that is far less than desirable, at least for me. I'd like my first experience with the game to be the best. Definitely on the hype train though.

Dark Souls 2 protip:

Don't lock onto enemies as much as you did in previous Souls games, in DS2 it slows down your movement massively, so much that it is out worse for you to lock on in most situations, especially in multiple-target encounters. Stop locking on, start using your sticks more to aim your attacks and enjoy your great combat speed, and your ability to backstab with ease. You will no longer have to circle slowly around your enemies to backstab them, you instead run and turn.

(This is especially important when lacking a shield or dual-wielding, success in PvP comes from not locking on.)

That area by the shore was fucking cool. Might be the prettiest souls area I've ever seen.

I played the video and tuned out a bit, then I looked at the screen at around the 10 minute mark and I was SHOCKED how garbage the textures look.
