Quick Look: Demon's Souls

I can't wait until this game gets here! Aaaarrrggghhhh
Had to watch this QL again, to see the awesomeness.

Came back to this QL after Dark Souls trailer got released, was thinking 'hey, I remember Demon's Souls, how hard was it?' This is how hard it was. No thank you. Great QL Vinny, think its the best you've done.

I almost always agree with Jeff's takes, but this is one of the exceptions.  He really rails into this games controls (even on the latest podcast from 2/8/11) and I couldn't disagree more.  I think the mechanics of stamina, and positioning are really well executed.  And the enemies have a lot of different attack animations that make it difficult to pick out what they are doing, and to protect yourself.  And if you block constantly, you'll have no stamina to attack.  One false move and you could be dead- really great game and can't wait for Dark Souls

You ALWAYS miss out. You ALWAYS end up not knowing what's going on in every single quick look. We still love you but man, you've got some patience issues.

Yes this game is hard and punishing but it`s also very rewarding once you manage to get trough it and start your new game + mania .
Also..  understanding  all the mechanics and different move-sets for weapons helps a lot .
 
I think you guys didn`t give the game a fair chance and wrote it off as too hard a bit too fast .

Here's my offer to you and to the great game Demon's souls to give it the attention and praise it deserves , for all the people on Giantbomb to see :
 
Do a Review of the game , I will give you my fav high level Character ..for you to use for this review .
This char (currently Lvl 213) has done multiple playthroughs has most of the weapons , magic , miracles and armor available useful for it's class/spec (some of the weapons/shields upgraded).
You can use this char however you please as long as you give Demon's Souls another chance , the only thing I ask of you is to NOT  destroy any of my equipment !!! :) 
You don't have to worry about losing souls or the world / character Tendency , I'll work out the kinks when I get my char back :)
 
If you need help with what spells and  equipment to use  or have questions about my gear/spell setup.. and gear I`m carrying around for specific encounters ...i`ll be happy to help you out 
 
So .. let me know :P.
 
P.s. this char is a PvE char, so... PvP would not be a good idea :)

I feel like Jeff has become Katherine in this Quick look. His demeanor seemed to just be "Sighhh"

This game is not as hard as I was expecting, it is punishing though. And you guys do know that Vinny beat it right? I don't see any of the other guys giving it a chance though especially how Vinny told them about it in the podcasts lol.

Just beat this game a few hours ago, finally, after starting it last August. This Quick Look is still fun to watch over again.

I have nothing but respect for all the people who have finished this game. I hate myself for wanting to go on now that I'm so far into it. RAGE!

I just ordered this game after recently getting a PS3. I'm kind of afraid that I'll hate it, but I just have to see what all the fuss is about.

I really, really, really want to love this game. Everything about it just seems like a pristinely well executed 3rd person combat/ exploration game, but I'm absolutely terrible at it. I can never tell if I just really suck at killing the bosses in it or I'm somehow playing it wrong, and I adamantly refuse to look up a walk-through for it to help myself so I'm at lots here.

Controls don't feel weird to me at all, but then again I came into this from a big kick off of the Monster Hunter game from the PSP.

Someday I hope to pick it up and try some more again.

Watching Vinny get bitch slapped by that specter ghost boss thing; with the high death penalty... fuck this game!

I got the Platinum in this game. it was a piece of cake.

Having finally gotten a chance to play this... I think it's quite simply the most engaging and outstanding rpg ever. One of the absolute best games, period. Inch by inch you earn your way through this game, braving these nightmarish locales, and it's so satisfying.

Just beat the game. I'm amazed by how great this game is. It's funny looking back at this quick look. It's especially interesting because I can mentally picture every single corner of this game and tell you where EVERY enemy is. You spend a lot of time being extremely cautious, but that means every moment is memorable.

Rewatching this to get amped about Dark Souls. God, it makes me feel so awful, but excited at the same time.

I just came back to this and thought it looked like a pretty sweet game I could get into, until 21 minutes when he reloaded right back at the start of the Quick Look.

Nevermind.

Hands down this was the most satisfying platinum I have ever earned. It also belongs to a very very select group of games in which I still want to play again after getting that platinum. Not every one will like it, but I think everyone should at least try it out.

I just started playing this again to decide whether I should get Dark Souls (losing my previous save to a broken console kept me away til today), and I had a lot more fun with it this time around.

Breezing through the first levels, defeating the bosses without even getting hit... this game is so damn satisfying when you begin to grasp all the systems and/or start remembering level layouts and tactics.

I guess everyone is rewatching this for Dark Souls :P

I would never have fun playing Saints Row 3 with cheats on, just blowing stuff up. That kinda stuff would bore me to death.

Weird to see how different this game is from Dark Souls. Never played this one.

These games have the best gameplay I've ever felt in a melee-oriented combat game. The people saying this game controls badly have either not played it at all, or were mad that their God of War power fantasy wasn't allowing them to breeze through the game laying waste to every enemy in their path with simple button mashing.

I'm not saying people can't like God of War, but this isn't that game. Stop expecting all games to play like you're used to, and be mega slash fests. We get a thousand clones of every AAA title because companies are scared to do anything new. Thank God we have a company like From Software to take chances.

this QL brings back good memories. The souls franchise is truly special.

Just got into Dark Souls for PC, suddenly felt the urge to revisit the quick look for both that and Demon's Souls.

I love watching old Giantbomb quick looks but this not one of my favourites despite the presence of Vinny and Jeff. Hearing Jeff say he skipped the tutorial stuff, especially in a game like Demon's Souls, makes me face palm.

Little did Vinny know that this was only the beginning.

Four years later and there's still no escape.

Well, to be fair, nobody at the time knew what to expect. It's part of what makes going back to this QL so fascinating.

Oh boy.

At the end of the Quick Look, Dave says something that sounds like "children by then?", when referring to when Vinny will finally understand all of the mechanics in Demon's Souls. I happen to love how accurate Dave was.

And nearly four years later...you got your wish!

Man, Vinny actually got a ton of his info correct in this. I think like 2 things he said were wrong, but that's really good.

It's still so weird hearing Jeff berate the game when it seems like all the systems might appeal to him if he gave it a greater chance (or maybe not... I dunno!). The stuff Jeff is complaining about, at least in this early video before the gameplay basically became a genre, is all entirely accounted for in the mechanics of the game. You're meant to learn attack patterns, you're meant to learn your own attack animations and compensate, you're meant to die and lose what you feel is something significant. All of that is fun and frustrating (Dark Souls being the only game in recent memory to make me nearly break a controller or maybe more out of sheer frustration and anger). The thing is, the harder a task is to complete, the more reward you feel when you've accomplished it, and even though I'm not one for games with steep difficulty, I've been absolutely drawn in to these games because of that.

Either way, I'm going to pick up a PS3 at some point to play the exclusives of that era, and number one on that list will be Demon's Souls given my current obsessive streak with the Souls series which, two games in without a break (and these are long games), hasn't seen my obsession waver.

Barely did they know this game would be one of the most important RPGs of our time.

I love this quick look. One of the best quick looks and games of all time. Demon's Souls changed everything.

Jeff's comments are funny. I remember feeling the same when I heard about this game, that it was brutally hard. The thing is though when you learn the systems it's a lot more fair than other games. You just need to be patient.

Playing Bloodborne brought me back to this QL. It's crazy hearing their reactions to what has become taken for granted in "Souls" games. I remember trying to play this game so many times and giving up in frustration. Loving Bloodborne though.

all these years I wonder, if only Vinny made it to the bottom of the stair way and open the gate. That would probably leave a better impression for the rest of the crews.
