Quick Look: Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen

I played ten or fifteen hours on the original release, but had a bug or something with the (only) save where I lost several hours progress and my enthusiasm. Picked up the re-release on PS3, but never got round to playing it. I am tempted to give a third try, Austin and a couple of other people's enthusiasm for the game is strong and contagious.

Yay this will make the wait for it to unlock on Steam shorter.

I really want to see a live stream of Austin killing two stones with one bird.

This is one of the best action RPG's of the last couple of years.

I'm usually pretty tolerant of peoples tastes in gaming, but anyone that claims otherwise is just plain wrong.

Dragon's Dogma is so good. A game they stirred in the cauldron for quite some time mixing stuff together and It's great. One of my favorite games in the recent years. The things it does well it knocks out of the park. Hope they make a sequel, I don't care about an MMO.

I love the ending of this game so much.

I would have liked the original Dragon's Dogma better if I hadn't spent so much time exploring, looking for cool areas only to discover that you visit pretty much all of them by just sticking to the main quest. That and the map is like 50% filler of oceans and mountains making it appear a lot bigger when you set out than it actually ends up being.

Still, I never played the expansion content and it has been a good couple of years since it came out. I'm totally gonna check out this PC version. With a good framerate and my expectations in check I'm hoping it'll be a good time.

I loved this game right up until it drove me insane with the 1000th fetch quest into the middle of nowhere (visited for the 50th time). I love the sense of adventure the original's lack of fast travel fostered, but I also wish it respected my time at the destinations.

I might give it a shot with the upgrade's new fast travel stuff. Is it all just "return to home" or is there more versatility to the system?

God, I can't wait to get home from work and play this tonight! Here's to hoping it runs well. Capcom's ports have been rock solid lately so I'm expecting nothing less here.

I should give this game another try. I didn't hate it, but it didn't really grab me in the first couple of hours. I think I have more time to dedicate to this kind of game now, it really does look interesting.

@theanonymousmrp: It also includes the original "port crystal" system, where you can place crystals in the ground and spend ferry stones to fast travel there, but they're MUCH more common and available way earlier on than in the original game.

I agree that goblins are ill much like fire.

When I got my PS3 this was free and man I dumped so so much time into it! It's so good! Lost my save, so I'm super psyched to get back into it on the PC for sure. Thanks for doing this one!

Also special note for ANIME fans out there:

You can get the full armor set for Griffith and Guts from the anime BERSERK in this game, complete with the huge sword and nimble rapier.

You look bad-ass in both. (Personally I prefer the Guts one cause c'mon.. that sword)

One of my top 5 favorite games of the last gen of consoles. It has a kinda ridiculous slow burn but takes a really dramatic turn towards being awesome almost nonstop in the second half of the game, and man when "that thing" happens in this game it really fucking goes for it and its amazing.

For those wondering about the Dark Arisen content dungeon, it is huge, difficult, and almost diablo 1 or dark souls-esque in its design.... like a ton more of the final 1/3 of the game in design (which is the best part).

It's great to see these Japanese console games come to PC. It's a shame Square Enix and Atlus are still so beholden to console exclusivity.

@shtinky: Square-Enix has ported most of the Final Fantasy games to PC. They're getting there.

Now if only we had SMT games on PC though...

I recently started playing this on the 360, I found it cheap used, its enjoyable still

Hotkeys for items sounds amazing. You can get your stamina and health right up if they go down, as Austin does a bunch in this episode, but pressing a button is much better than having to navigate that menu every time.

I think navigating and exploring the world is something you kinda have to do even if there is fast travel. Because you have to go to the place where you want to place a portcrystal first, and you want to place them in spots where they're relevant for quests, it's not something you can just do right away. But sometime during my second playthrough, I had placed portcrystals at all the appropriate spots and didn't have to walk very much anymore.

It's also worth noting that this game gets easier with every playthrough, not harder. There is a hard mode, but it's not a significant upgrade for the enemies compared to your own growth(The big difficulty spike is in Bitterblack Isle, the Dark Arisen content, which _does_ get much harder). There aren't actually that many quests you have to do in order to progress the game, most of it is optional. There is a speedrun mode that imports your main save into a new game and times you and you lose if you go past something like two hours. It's completely doable, and a lot of it just depends on taking necessary items and have good portcrystals available from the main game.

Man, I love this game. I'm not gonna get it on the PC because I already played a ton of it on the 360, but this is the best version by far and I recommend anyone interested to try it out. I wouldn't argue that it's better than Dark Souls or Skyrim, but it is its own unique thing. At least, I think so? I never played Monster Hunter unfortunately.

Number one thing that could get me to buy this port: An option to make the companions shut the fuck up.

I tried playing this game on the PS3 and I enjoyed it, but the framerate was so shit in parts that I stopped playing altogether. I'd jump on a PS4 re-release with a steady framerate though.

One of my favorite things in this game is playing an assassin and ROUND HOUSE KICKING BIRDS OUT OF THE SKY

I mean this game could be called roundhouse kick bird simulator 2016 it's just such a pleasure to watch the animation as the daggers hang by your side and your leg comes swinging around knocking birds or bats to their rightful place, the ground. I can't get enough how this game was on the PS3 but it always felt clunky it looks so amazing now on the PC and I can't wait! My team will be assassin ranger tank healer probably from start to end. I love the animations for combat they are very fluid and almost seem to never end if you use daggers! Game owns. Buy it
