Seems cool, but I could see myself getting extremely frustrated with this game. I'm not sure it's worth that for me.

I like the boss rush idea, but the video gives the impression that the boss phases need to be about half as long as they are to be enjoyable. Given what people are saying about the difficulty, I don't think it would be fun to repeat a bunch of long preliminary phases every time you need to get back to the point you are stuck on.

Yeah, I played about 30 minutes of this, never got past the tutorial boss, and just got annoyed.

I feel like this should be a game for me, but I just don't... get it... I think.

@lawgamer: Brad could've been playing more aggressively most of the time, the only times it's really pointless to attack the boss is when they glow red/orange, if they're dodging just let off for a second for an opening. You can beat them within 10 minutes each. There's even a trophy for beating one within 5 minutes.

The game's not entirely like this, but I wish they did a quick look of Jotun (when it comes to console probably). The game has pretty challenging bosses too, and using your abilities makes it so it never feels cheap, it's just up to your ability to use the move sets at the right time. I just feel like it's a game many would enjoy, and yet not many of have played.

I made a thread of it some time ago, and a lot of people said they didn't play it. I think the thing I can say about it in terms of negativity, and I think many will catch, is that it can kind of look like a flash game. The art is fantastic, but how many animations are in a frame may not be as much as one could hope, to look smoother. Here's one of the bosses. It can be frustrating, but it's not cheap in my opinion.

I started playing after watching this and those first two bosses were way easier than Brad implied. Beat them both on the first try. (These kinds of games are definitely not my forte either.)

The difficulty definitely ramps up with that 3rd guy though. I got through most of it, but that last little stretch will require some practice. Especially on the parry timing.

Is Brad visual cue-blind?

Also Danger (with a French pronunciation) is fucking awesome. Admittedly I got into his music because of the video game-ness of his album teasers:

One of my favorite games of the year so far. Maybe I just don't know the genre (which btw need suggestions for things like it) but it floors me! Great feeling when I finally get it.

@brad: You really should be using the rapid fire gun a lot more in the overhead stages of the fight. It's the safest and most reliable way to inflict damage to a boss. That last fight I didn't see you use it once and you missed out on a lot of easy damage.

To be fair, I probably should learn to use the charged shot and slash more though. It's easy to over rely on the gun when there are probably good opportunities for burst damage with those.

@brad: Just in case you didnt notice this: Each health bar the bosses have is two health bars, one blue, one orange.

The blue one is the overhead, further back mode. Once that's gone, the bar will be completely orange and the game moves into that close-up dueling mode.

Also, when one person loses one of their health bars, the other gets their bar filled back up. For example, if you were down to one hit on your bar of health, but finished the boss's orange bar, your bar will go back up to full. On the other side, if your health bar goes down completely, the boss's bar will go back up to a full blue bar.

@ripelivejam: At one point he lets the first boss he fights recover from their downed state and return to full health because he was talking to Dan, which was pretty frustrating to watch.

Not going to rip on Brad but that's totally a Brad move. That's why we love him.

@brad I haven't played it, but from watching it looks like when you deplete one set of health bars, you get one back and vice versa.

I wondered if anyone else was going to notice this...was amazed he hadn't has I noticed in on UPF and here pretty quickly. But then I am not playing the game and oh wow does it look like the concentration needed for this game would be amazing. Not for me given the time I have to devote to such things. Hope some people find it fun more power to you.

to which i say: try talking AND being entertaining/informative AND playing the game WHILE having the pressure of showing it to a large audience at the same time. no i'm not saying there's nobody out there who can't do it perfectly, but i would wager most can't (including probably you and most definitely me). it seems quite the balancing act to achieve.

just watching him on the 2nd boss at the start i know his reflexes and handle on the game are already probably better than i'd ever have even if i dedicated myself to it, but that's just my opinion.

i guess with anyone it's a spectrum, and there's a few out there who are just exposed to the elite of the elite and thus hold everyone to the same standard. i get that sort of; they just sometimes tend to be dicks about it. i would say there's a select few who just immediately default to the extreme "brad sucks at games" tired old chestnut in typically complete denial of reality.

i know you're not hating on him at all, just explaining my viewpoint for those who may be... less charitable...

They actually go by way quicker if you know what you're doing and don't die a lot. Brad wasted a lot of opportunities to do damage in that last fight and he seemed to be unaware that dying during that duel phase means you have to redo the previous phase.

Your first encounter with a boss might take longer as you're trying to figure out the fight, but once you know what you're doing you can generally breeze through the early phases in a few minutes.

@zeik: Ah ok, that makes me interested in this again, might pick it up on sale in a year or so, otherwise I was totally out.

Yeah I definitely noticed the last boss had to segments per bar and was reverting back to full health every couple of minutes, but Brad and Dan obviously didn't see that. Brad might have won those $15 if he'd noticed...maybe.

don't know how many millions of times they repeat it and try to explain that they're also not the best at a particular game

@nickhead: Just so you know, the boss fights definitely aren't as long as Brad's making them seem. He was stuck on the first phase of the poison boss for quite some time. But you can see that he's not even shooting it at all when it's doing its long attacks that leave it stationary for ~10 seconds, so he's missing out on a ton of easy/free damage.

There are also some mechanics Brad isn't using that would greatly speed things up. For example, you can power up your sword with electricity, and then your next attack deals tons of damage (like 1/3 an HP bar). He mentioned that he wasn't sure how to activate the cool cinematic attacks. You get those by hitting the boss with charged melee attacks, which he only did once or twice. Additionally, you can dodge while you're charging your sword. So you can charge, dodge, dodge, hit the boss with the charged attack, and then immediately activate the cinematic attack. That combo will usually do ~1/2 a bar.

Hope this doesn't sound like I'm hating on Brad. This game is very tense, and I can't imagine how tough it'd be to play and explain it. And the game's tutorial doesn't do a great job of explaining some of the mechanics. I had to go to the How To Play menu to pick up on the 3 mechanics I mentioned.

Having literally just finished the game a few minutes ago, I would love to see a Breaking Brad series based on this game.

Admittedly it'd probably be a pretty short run (though I haven't messed with Furier difficulty to say that for certain) , but knowing Brad... well, you never know.

That's the downside of everyone these days demanding that games not hold their hands. Developers can and do depend on people to find solutions on the internet if they run into problems now. Which, for the 20% who choose not to do that, will likely wind up causing them to struggle through sections of the game like Brad did with that boss.

I didn't find out any of the things you mentioned until I was about 7 bosses deep into the game. By then I was so accustomed to playing a certain way it was too late to incorporate them into my playstyle. A lot of stuff like shooting down specific projectiles to clear a path, or getting health back from green pick ups are left completely up to the player to find out by accident.

Speaking of which, it would be really funny if Vinny or Jeff were to play this and couldn't see the green bullets at all, since they're often accompanied by yellow ones that are the exact same.

I needed a game like this. It takes a while to feel comfortable with all the different combat tools but once you do, learning all of the bosses patterns and mastering them is very satisfying. Perfect for quick pick up and play sessions. And needless to say but great soundtrack as well. I was wondering when I'd hear from Danger again

Small warning for any interested PC buyers: The game does not support any resolutions above 1080p, it also has trouble with 16:10 resolutions, leading to letterboxing.

It's also interesting how the duders always end up loving synthwave/outrun music, without actually naming the genre. Besides Waveshaper, there's also Carpenter Brut, Toxic Avenger, Danger and a couple of really great other artists on this games OST.

Glad you guys did a quick look of this. I would have missed it, and for free! It's very satisfying. I beat 3 bosses tonight. I didn't want to give up. Sure, I would lose, but once you start figuring out the patterns, you make it deeper into the fight without losing one of your own health bars (or any at all). Looking forward to playing more.

I found controller inputs to feel a bit laggy in this game; particularly, the dodge wasn't happening when I expected it to. I suspect this is due to there being a hold variant of almost everything, combined with other things, so if it is a design decision, that leaves me a little disappointed. The game looked a lot tighter in the Quick Look.

This seems less interesting the more I see and play of it. Music is great, but that's about it for me. Story and dialogue definitely feels like Afro Samurai and boy did I hate Afro Samurai. Gameplay takes a lot of concepts from NieR, but it isn't near as fresh as that and is just off enough for me to not care for it. It's prettt okay I guess, but nothing except the music really jumps out at me. Not bad for a PS+ game at least.

@jesushammer: It's got some major story issues for sure. The game is borderline obsessive about maintaining it's vagueries and it's not really to it's credit. There's a pretty world and the audio design is great, but some of the bosses are straight up slogs that are not any actual fun.

So far, I'm pretty sure I've died at least once on every boss past the second's final form because you're being asked to participate in a bullet hell ballet that feels borderline unfair. It seems like the game is all about repetition and improvement but... It's kind of not a game I want to play more than I have to just because it is unnecessarily punishing, especially with later stages where falling off platforms becomes a hazard during combat as if there wasn't already enough to deal with on screen.

@xxizzypop: I actually got more of that dark souls "when you die it always feels fair/like its your fault". The vague stuff towards the beginning wasn't great but I liked the reveal at the end of the story/the last couple bosses stories as well.

Brad's on the 4th boss and he still doesn't understand that health regens after beating each phase? Cause and effect is definitely not his strong suit.
