I'm showing my age, but I loved this game and remember being shocked when I saw Mario for the first time thinking.... this is a ripoff of Gianna Sisters, LOL.

Weird that they would release this now (in the US), almost 3 years after its original release.

I'm with Jeff, it doesn't look THAT bad. The animation on the beholder eyeball looked okay, and the squish sound when it died was okay too. Okay.

This game was actually released on the iPhone a couple years ago. Which could account for the short level length.

Great to hear that they put a variant of the main theme in there. But nothing beats the Commodore 64 theme of Giana Sisters. Just listen to it:

I've never seen this.... and it's appealing to me though it looks sorta bad. That don't matter to me though. I just might consider this game.

Many months ago I was looking at gameplay vids of this on Youtube and there were people in the comments talking about how much better it was than New Super Mario Bros.

@RVonE: I was completely prepared to tell you that "Pfffft, that theme isn't very good, it's just your nostalgia talking." But dammit, that's actually alright.

I was a British PC gamer kid, with all the implicit weird memories of Giana Sisters, but this seems amazingly terrible. That's what nostalgia is supposed to do, right?

Noticing the same thing. The sound from Jeff specifically sounds muffled.

Edit:  And as it's gotten going, Ryan sounds very scratchy. Weirdness.

The original game is 25 years old running on 30 year old hardware. What did you expect?

You're right, I obviously expected Ps3 quality graphics.

The original Super Mario Bros. isn't beautiful but Mario's character model at least doesn't look like something exploded on his head.

That scrolling menu screen is getting annoying. I once heard someone try to make the case that modern games aren't innovative like games like Green Beret and the Giana Sisters.

@Rodiard: Come on it aint that bad. It is good for c64.

Giana sisters was my first video game. I played c64 before I played super mario. I still have commodore 64 and Giana sisters. Those maps were similiar but no the same as in Giana. Those who made that game didn't ask original composer to work on those tunes. The composer was Chris Hülsbeck.

I'm pretty sure that level 2-4 shown in this game is the first underground stage from the original. I wonder if they changed the spot where you can get trapped between some falling rocks and unbreakable blocks.

Ryan was right, the original got pulled after Nintendo sued the publisher Rainbow Arts. About a year later they were sued again after Activision thought their game Katakis was too similar to R-Type, which Activision had bought the home computer rights to. (When Activision's programmer couldn't finish the C64 version they hired Rainbow Arts to do the port instead, but that's another story.)

Pointless trivia: The graphics of The Great Giana Sisters were drawn by Manfred Trentz as his first commercial game. Later he became more known as the creator of Turrican.

I remember playing a hack of this game on the C64 that exchanged a bunch of sprites for Mario. Until now, I had no idea it was a hack. The stinger before the level started gave it away.

@antime: Rainbow Arts made one of my favorite games of my childhood, Apprentice.

Or what we called it at the time the guy with the boxes.

Just listen to that music in the intro~

@Deathcrow: While I appreciate that version on its own, I don't think it compares to the original. Maybe I'm crazy, but like Jeff I just really appreciate the sound of chiptunes; especially that coming out of the Commodore 64's SID. There's just something about chiptunes that jives with me in a way that doesn't cross over to other forms of music.

Here I am, talking about chiptunes, Commodore 64, and jiving. I suddenly feel old.

Oh yeah I totally get where you are coming from. When the topic comes up I always point people towards the Skate or Die Intro composed by Rob Hubbard. If this doesn't convince them I can't help them. ;)

I love ZZAP 64's quote on the box art "The greatest platformer of all time?"

Of course they had to put a question mark there because the next bit was probably "Sadly, no. But for Commodore 64 fans who can't enjoy the platforming excellence of Nintendo's Super Mario Bros here is a game they can play to get a feel for this style of platforming game."
