About 4 hours in and I'm loving it. It's like 60% golf and 40% story.

edit: use LB/RB to put spin on the ball. Hitting the top/bottom of the ball is for punch/loft shots.

Ok so, Dan hitting X and moving the hitpoint to the bottom isn't backspin. That's something else, forgot the actual name. Back/Frontspin is holding L/R.

Cool QL. 4hrs into this game and and I'm loving it. Following on from Steamworld Dig 2, Vinny is right; it's the best time to be playing game.

Also, tip for anyone playing this,

I don't know about you guys, but I'm terrible at putting. Luckily this game lets you use ANY club at any point in the course. Including the Green.

Chipping/dunking/whatever its called with a wedge or another club is a thousand times easier and more reliable than putting ever was.

Yeah, hitting X changes the point you hit the ball and causes it to either loft higher or cut lower, or to curve left/right. Useful when dealing with trees in your way or the wind, also has an impact on how the ball will land and roll (higher loft means it's coming at the ground with less horizontal motion). But actual spin is applied by L/R which causes a little shading to appear on the top/bottom of the ball and spin once it hits the ground.

Whenever I hear the noise when you hit the button during the golf swing gauge I think it sounds just like the start screen noise when you hit start during Super Mario All Stars on the SNES. I can't unhear it and it's driving me crazy.

I'm not sure where the Stardew Valley comparisons are coming from. It definitaly has more of an Earthbound vibe to it.

Quick comment from someone who's further in the game (been to 6 of 8 courses so far): The game stays charming throughout and the sense of humor stays spot on. But the actual golf stays just good, not great. The courses are certainly differentiated and you go to some wacky places, but overall the golf mechanics aren't that different. Slightly different obstacles or course design, different things to avoid on each course, different challenges, but it doesn't go crazy with it.

But the golf is fun enough and the game is definitely worth it just for the story and goofy things it does. I won't spoil the moments, but there are a ton of unexpected, funny scenes, lots of good characters and dialogue, and weird, non-golf things that mix up what you're doing.

That's interesting to hear because I am a few hours in and had no idea.. like Dan I thought that changing the point of contact on the ball would induce spin on it (like you would expect physically). I don't think the game communicates how to put spin on the ball very effectively.

The core golf mechanics in this seems way too basic. Fetch quests can't really make up for that imo.

@stachestash: It's probably a combination of Stardew Valley being a recent game that has a similar look and Earthbound being really old.

Any reason this is exclusive to Switch? They're not a Nintendo dev. I don't like buying games and later finding out they're coming to PC, like Nioh.

Why use a pixel-art aesthetic if you're going to plaster a mobile game-grade UI and HUD over it?

It looks kinda mobile UI on a big screen, like a TV or PC monitor, but when you play it in handheld mode it looks normal and fitting, it's something I noticed when I first tried it in the dock. I think it has to do about the colours on icons being too flat and limited. But like I said, looks great on the handheld screen when they're not the size of your hand.

I also wasn't sure about this game when I seen it all of a sudden show up on the switch store. Looked up a couple reviews for it and still wasn't sure if it was genuinely a decent game or just people starved for content. Bit the bullet and payed the whole 20 Canadian pesos for it and got hooked hard within the first 5 minutes. Been taking my switch to work every day since to playing it my whole lunch break.

Switch is really becoming the heir apparent to Vita in being an indie powehouse, All we need are scads of somewhat overpriced JRPGs and we're good.

Good week for Switch indie titles wonder if Dan is going to quick look stardew valley I can see there being a different audience who may be attracted to the game now on mobile like this. My problem with stardew is that it's so dependent on mods to strip away annoying bulls hit.

Leading up to this games release they showed some trailers with crazy things going on but everything I've see has been grounded in reality for this game. Do you ever get an ability to spawn endless golf balls or did they just do that for The trailer?

Oh, WOW, I'm like 5-8 hours in and I had no idea this was the case! I knew targeting the ball at different points gave it different trajectories but I assumed the spin was being put on it at the same time. There's so much about this game that it just doesn't tell you.

This game is weirdly unpolished and buggy but it's still compellingly worth playing. Gonna see if this back/front spin can help out my game.

Oh man this had me shouting at the screen worse than a Layton Quick Look .

In the 14 shots challenge: Hits every shot too long. Keeps moving precision cursor past hole anyway.

Speaks to Archeologist has digging wedge equipped: "I need to find something to dig with".

Right at start shows off the power bracelet he's bought from the 2nd pro shop: Completes quest, is told to buy power bracelet. Goes to pro shop "I don't see anything new here".

I'm about 10 hours into this game, and it never stops being amazing. It's so charming. The writing is really good. It's easily in my top 10 for the year.

A spoiler in the loosest term: there is a golf rap battle in it between a crotchety old man and a backwards hat wearing youth. It goes on for about 4 minutes. I was rather in shock that it was happening. It is literally like 4 minutes of golf-related rhymes.

But really, everything related to the angry old guys at Tidy Park is the best.

Also, the writers leaning into Max Yards being a egotistical sellout piece of shit never gets old. They make him the biggest scumbag and it's so good. He tries to shill at every opportunity and then as soon as the camera's off he talks about how none of stuff he shills does anything.

@octocoq said:

There is one. You also have to take out an evil army of skeletons by chipping shots at them with your pitching wedge. Oh, and then later you have to reassemble an army of skeletons, but the skeletons can't see so you have to hit eyes into their heads.

Surprised only one person has mentioned the various Mario sports handheld games made by Camelot. This seems pretty heavily inspired by Mario Golf Advance Tour for the GBA more than anything else; much like how Stardew Valley was heavily inspired by Harvest Moon.

Yeah, no idea what's up with that. The worst thing you can do visually in a game is have multiple clashing art styles.
