Reading some of the comments. I hear there's heavy Bradding in a video of my favorite franchise. Oh well.

I'm still sort of going to not buy this and just wait for when all the mods have been ported and multiplayer is in.

Nope. Not gonna do it. Not gonna post unnecessary grief.

Only 2 minutes in, and already fucking up the most basic shit... The Homeworld games do not take place on a flat plane! One of the best things about these games are their masterful use of, and intuitive controls in, a fully 3D battlefield.

Fully 3D movement is a serious back-of-the-box-bullet-point level feature of these games, and one that is still yet to be surpassed in the RTS genre. You can attack, or be attacked from, any direction! Several of the missions make use of this, and it slowly ramps up over the course of the campaign.

@evilsbane: What are you talking about? There are formations in HM1 remastered. Fighters just don't pop out in fighter wings like they do in HW2. Play the tutorial if you forgot how to play the game.

Bought it. Played the first few missions. First time since probably 2001.

I forgot all about the asteroid mission. Fuck the asteroid mission.

Story in Homeworld is one of the most unique amazing stories in video games!

Basically (MAJOR STORY SPOILERS AHEAD):

Your civilization on Earth found an ancient artifact in the desert, its remnants of an ancient spaceship. Its technology allowed your civilization to develop warp drives. The game starts with you testing these warp drives. You blink out... all is well... few minutes latest blink bank... BOOM EARTH IS DESTROYED!!! WHAAAAAT? How? Why? WHO WHA...?

You have no choice but to follow the star map from the ancient artifact found in that ancient spaceship. Hoping that the place marked "Home" is a habitabile planet.

You then discover that the people attacking you are from that home planet, and you actually were from there as well millenia ago, in conflict you lost, and were exiled, you settled Earth and as part of the treaty agreed to never develop warp drives. This was millenia ago, all knowledge of this was lost. So unknowingly you develoepd warp drives and by testing them you broke the treaty. The other side saw it as you wanting to attack them (breaking the treaty). So they attacked first, destroying earth etc... That ancient spaceship you found... thats actually your spaceship from millennium ago..

Basically Battlestar Gallactica story :P How is that not fascinating? You peace this together as you play.

@bluefalcon: He's referring to two significant changes.

First, formations are not held by units in motion - fighters and corvettes abandon them if they are moving or in combat. This is new.

Second, tactics no longer exist - instead of changing how units engage enemies (aggressive tactics would favor slow motion maintaining the formation and firing distance from target for constant attack, evasion would have units fire less and move more to reduce time vulnerable to enemy fire) now it simply determines if units will move to engage targets they detect or not engage at all until directed to.

It's amusing that I'm having the exact same scripting bug that Brad has in this video... only scuttling my stuck mobile refinery didn't fix it. I hope they iron those things out because I do love me some Homeworld.

They are way different. SINS is a 4X game, Homeworld is an RTS

For anyone wondering whether to give this game a shot be aware that this video is full of misinformed opinions and ignorance of core game mechanics. It sucks that whenever some future giant bomb user gets curious about homeworld this is what they'll look at. I give this video 2 stars outta 5. Brad's laid back don't give a fuck attitude works against him on this one.

After watching this video, I'm having a hard time trusting the myriad of fans saying that HW1 is so much better than HW2. Can I get an honest opinion on what makes the first one better because it looks like HW2 is the one to play.

Giant Bomb really needs to get a dedicated RTS quick looker that understands the genre. It's painful to watch this when they make a comment that they don't understand core gameplay concepts such as moving in 3 dimensional space.

This is one of the worst quicklooks on GB. Brad said a few things that are completely not true about the game. Homeworld 1 has an amazing story, and thats what makes it a better game for me personally.

@onemanarmyy: That's definitely part of it for me; I love Homeworld, and I first played it when I was in my early teens. Nostalgia gives you a heck of a perspective shift.

But there's plenty of stuff Brad gets wrong here too, so it's not just salt.

@schonebaby: Homeworld 1 Remastered is the campaign from Homeworld 1 running in Homeworld 2 so some things in regards to small fighter craft and corvettes changed (in Homeworld 1 they need to refuel) and the way formations work for them also changed. From what I've seen its been a rather hotly debated topic.

After you right click to move, hold and drag the mouse up or down for z axis. You can even waypoint this way, brilliant system. The heck Brad... the only reason this game is a classic is because of the 3d space. On one plane this game would be boring as shit.

3D space is pretty much the defining characteristic of Homeworld as an RTS. The game would be fairly unremarkable without it. You'll also end up getting destroyed if you ignore it since you can get attacked from any angle.

Isn't the first level a tutorial or something that introduces how to control ships in the 3D space? If my memory serves me right, all you need to do is do like a shift+click or something like this. I don't know how Brad could have missed this.

I'm pretty disappointed to hear that your resources and ships carry over from mission to mission still. It's a neat idea but made the late game tedious and unbalanced. If you didn't complete a mission with a sizable fleet surviving, and of the right ship types, you would be screwed from the very start of the next mission, making you reload and replay the entire previous mission. Part of the fun of RTS games (or any game really) is to be able to win by the skin of your teeth. In Homeworld, though, if you don't completely overpower your enemy you don't win in the long run.

Here's a video demonstrating broken formations in remastered edition:

Also notice the UI clutter. The original game relied on context menus and keyboard shortcuts. Not super user-friendly, but it was damn pretty (granted, you can hide the UI with remastered edition...)

Yeah, three minutes in when I heard "Space is a flat plane"... a 3D battlespace was the biggest selling point and historical innovation of this game.

@schonebaby: I'd say HW2 was better in multiplayer but HW1 in single player. HW1 has a fucking amazing and deep story and it is mostly that which makes the game for me. It is probably in my top 3 of games ever made just because of it. HW2 has a story that is not really playing in that same ballpark, but is totally fine. My biggest gripe with HW2 was the dynamic difficulty. If you did well later missions would become more difficult, if you ended a mission with a big fleet then the enemy fleet on the next mission would become larger. I tried to finish it on three separate playthroughs but was never able to, I would claim to be pretty good at RTS games HW1 included but HW2 was literally so difficult that I could not finish it.
