Seems like the people on this site are more cranky with comments as of late.

3D space is pretty much the defining characteristic of Homeworld as an RTS. The game would be fairly unremarkable without it. You'll also end up getting destroyed if you ignore it since you can get attacked from any angle.

Yeah, three minutes in when I heard "Space is a flat plane"... a 3D battlespace was the biggest selling point and historical innovation of this game.

This was really the weirdest oversight I've seen in recent QLs.

I can only think that what Brad meant to say was that the game defaults to a flat plane for movement commands in order to make positioning units possible in an endless 3D environment. He must have known that you can move them around in 3D since he does try to do it, albeit unsuccessfully.

If you have never heard of this game before and come to this quick looking for an idea of what it's about, then this QL is really empty.

It's a full fledge RTS that operates in 3D, it maintains the rock-paper-scissors combat style (corvettes kill fighters, frigates kill corvettes, capital class kill frigates, and fighters swarm capital class), you research new units (HW2 you even research improved armor/engines per class or new abilities), etc. To not even show any ships above corvette class is really weird.

The QL also doesn't show that in HW2 higher class ships like the battlecruiser and mothership can be customized with different modules and sensors. And agreed, creating a Shift account sucks to play multiplayer, but to not even glance at that is also strange (or to have a saved skirmish game to load up to show late game stuff).

Appreciate the GB crew for giving Homeworld Remastered a look.

I have to assume this is one of those cases of people half-watching a video and then getting upset about what they think they heard, because yeah, I said all of this flat out.

What do you mean you don't need to move ships up and down!

@brad If you like zooming in on big ship battles you should play Sins of a Solar Empire

Yeah Sins is my go to game for space battle porn. I'm currently playing around with the Star Trek: Armada 3 mod and it is awesome.

I'm looking forward to picking this game up. Hopefully the scripting issues/bugs get sorted out soon.

Ehhhh ignore em. 99% of everybody else understood what you meant. You can breeze through the vast majority of the game's single player without having to worry about the Z plane anyways.

Homeworld Remastered: I'm talking about the remastered original. I haven't tried HW2 yet, and am wondering if I will even bother. What a disaster. What a botch! Thank goodness they included classic (which I have on disk from the original release anyway) or it would have been a total waste of my money. I was hoping for Homeworld with better graphics and a full screen, not this player-unfriendly mess that requires macro-managing of every damn ship. "Shoot that ship" in the original results in the ship doing just that, even if it has to move half way across the map. In remastered? "Perhaps after I go off in the wrong direction, or just sit here for ages. Maybe then, if they come near me, I'll shoot." Harvesters? "Nothing here, so I'll just park. Go looking at that rock that is a couple ship lengths away? God no, that would mean I need to move without specific instructions!" Bah! What a frustrating mess.
A previous poster said HW players wouldn't like this. How accurate that comment was.

Yea maybe that's what was meant, but I didn't interpret what was said as "you can move on the Z axis."

I think I'll get this, and then play the original versions. That'll solve all of the mechanics problems right? I only ever played HW2 in the past and loved it, so I'm sure I can do that again.

In regards to salt, though, did Brad say that HW2's cinematics were updated? Did he mean from HW1, or from the original HW2? Because they look just like I remember.

This is pretty much exactly how I remember Homeworld when it was released. It's an awesome idea, but the tedious controls and poor readability just made the game too much for me.

@evilsbane: This was one of my big deal breakers for playing it again. The formations are pretty important to strategy.

To be fair a couple minutes in Jeff very clearly asks if it is just a flat plane and you say yes. I'm assuming most of these comments are from people who paused the video or stopped watching at that point since I know you did correct yourself a little bit later.

I'm always really confused as to why they have Dragon Age II on that PC.
