If real-world cleaning were as quick and satisfying as it is in games like this and Viscera Cleanup Detail, I'd have the cleanest place ever.

This sounds like a pitch for a VR version of this game, to me.

Dan's overall cluelessness about pretty basic household things, ie fuseboxes, cold water need for washing machines, a heated towel rail, never ceases to amaze me.

Modern houses don't really have fuseboxes anymore, and I've NEVER seen (or even heard of) a "heated towel rail", mister/miss fancy-pants. :b

Usually when somebody says "this is probably a stupid question" what follows isn't that stupid. Unless your name is Dan Ryckert.

In my first house in Las Vegas we had a pool and an insane amount of cock roaches and my second house in Las Vegas we had a scorpion infestation. One night my girlfriend was doing her hair and a scorpion fell from the ceiling into her hair. I woukd always find my cat killing them too. We would find a dead one every week, I finally moved because fuck scorpions unless they are from the nether realms but come to think of it all scorpions are from the nether realms. They climb palm trees and get into your house and once they do you're fucked can't get rid of them. They have to crawl across poison and can survive for months without food or water they are horrid. Cock roaches were bad but nothing compared to scorpions.

The end game is cleaning houses from P.T and Resident Evil. It's kinda ironic that roaches are one of the cleanest bugs out there and the thought of us humans grosses them out even know their presence is known as "this place is gross"

This seems a cool premise for a video game, I wish games with a good idea had more money to spend so it doesn't look like any other steam fodder.

Such a great idea that deserves a better game. Hopefully they can improve the game or make a sequel.

I worked as a laborer in construction for a few years and I must say this is all quite accurate to the real thing, at least so far.

P.S. Thank GOD I never had to deal with cockroaches or a significant amount of bugs. I’ve been in some nasty places but I never had to be in one of those

Cleaning can be meditative too!

If I were in Vinny's place I'm not sure I could resist feeding Dan a continuous line of BS about how things actually work, and letting him learn the hard way. But at least he's sort of trying to learn I guess.

I guess Dan's not only clueless one. What's with Vinny and Alex thinking washing machines need a hot water connection? Also this:

Alex: "With color loads, you generally don't need to do hot water as much".

Vinny: "Dry wall is concrete in board form" (paraphrasing).

Wat?

@skumberg: This is all accurate. My washer has two connections, one hot, one cold. And hot water can make colors more likely to bleed, so it's generally reserved for your whites.

I've never seen a washer with a hot water connection, the washer heats the water itself to the actual temperature you set. Is that a Europe<>US thing?

I used to do janitorial work and yeah - probably one of the more relaxing jobs I've ever had. It'd be really interesting to see a more business/immersive version of this, like letting you look through people's offices while cleaning them.

By the way, yes Vinny you only need cold water and a drain for the washer, there is heating element in the washer.

@curenio: In the vid one is a water input which the machine then heats as needed and the other is the outflow of used dirty water. I know of no washing machine that has a cold and hot input.

Watching the shower installation at the first job and Vinny stating that wouldn't be allowed cuz it doesn't have a limiter makes me think of the places I've lived when stationed in Germany as well as visiting family in France. Usually there is the amount of water on the left knob and the right knob is the exact temperature, with a limiter built into the knob, you have to push in a button as you turn to get past a certain temperature, similar to medicine bottles being "child proof".

I'd love for the GBE crew to "work" "together" cleaning up a co-op Viscera Clean-up Detail map. I just adore that game's silly little sci-fi movie references and humor, though I'll admit I'd enjoy it a lot more if it had the sort of comprehensive trackers and task variety this game does.

@vinny We have a towel rail like that. It’s oil filled and wired into the wall like a shaver or a light. Electric heats up the oil and the heat dries your towels or keeps the bathroom warm. We don’t have gas central heating, so it’s the only way we could have one.

Also going to join the “what the..!” folk when it comes to the washing machine. 1. In the UK, you would never have a freestanding electrical appliance like that in the bathroom. 2. Washing machines have a heating element to heat the water. That’s how you can set it from 30•C to 90•C and everything in between.

Also also, this is one of those videos I finish watching and think “how has Dan not died in a freak accident yet?”

This is not universally true in the US. Must be a Euro thing. See here, two hoses - a hot and a cold:

(Dishwashers on the other hand have a built in heating element)

Yes, every washing machine in the US that I have owned has connections for hot and cold water, and a separate connection for waste water. When I lived in Japan, they only had a single cold water input and a waste water output.

"this is probably a stupid question"... but something about this QL reminded me about a question I've had for a while:

Has GB ever talked about how or if they get any type of compensation from doing their videos from outside sources? Obviously they get paid from views, subs, ads on the site, covering "hot" topics to drive traffic, etc. I've looked a little and have never been able to dig up anything useful on the site. And I'm sure they don't get anything for reviews, but at this point 99% of their content is not reviews. So to me it would stand to reason without being told that there would most likely be a decent possibility that people could offer compensation to have excitement drummed up about their product, be it a game, physical product (like with product placement, talking about them and so on), etc.

Sorry if this has been talked about to death before and I just suck at finding the info, if anyone can link or PM me a link to any stuff talking about this type of thing I'm quite interested to know more.

I'll try this as a forum post so that I can flesh it out a bit, I hate typing when trying to talk about most subjects since the details and nuances are so slow and cumbersome at least for myself to get out and express/explain yada yada yada... but I had to make this post to be able to make a topic in the forum so I thought why not just post it here as well.

@tonal:Read Jeff Gerstmann's Wiki entry for some of the history behind the inception of Giant Bomb. GB has always been supported by ads and subscribers and I don't think would ever accept a 'pay for play' agreement.

Never lived or even seen an apartment or house without heated towel rail in Finland. It gets the hot water circulating inside from district heating.

More I think about it heated towel rail makes sense with the widespread availability of district heating in Nordics and maybe quite not so much for US and most of Western Europe.

@tonal: I am not entirely sure what you are getting at. Like promoting energy drinks that got sent in the mail or something? I am not aware of any instances where they've deliberately pushed promotionals outside of what are very obviously paid advertisements targeted to non-premium members. One could always get conspiratorial about these things of course but that is not a worthwhile use of time so this about as far as I'll take this conversation :)

@imbiginjapan: No problems! I'm just bringing up something that I personally think about when I interact with any company. Maybe it's my problem! If you or anybody are interested I could dig up a couple examples sometime. But I'm not talking about the mail bags just to answer that part anyhow. :)
