You should watch the Stardew Valley playdate from yesterday for the start of the conversation on which day starts the week and the relevant ISO standards.

Sunday is the first day of the week. I've always pronounced "Deku" as "Day-koo." Should probably ask the developers how to pronounce their words in English. :-P

Yeah it looks mashy and not that crisp to me. Playing Hyper Light Drifter right now and by comparison looks rough. I like other aspects.

But I do think Vinny is right that Dan needs to roll (a move Hyper Light Drifter has so it's noticeable to me he never was doing it too).

What a cute little puzzle adventure game, I haven't even HEARD of the first one. The music is pretty solid, too, and I'm digging the art style. I might have to give this a try.

Americans lack of adherence to norms is just individualism in action. ISO 8601 just gives a standardised norm for businesses and the government to orientate, which turned out to be widely accepted by everyone but Northern Americans (there may be exceptions). Its similar if compared on why the GMT system and the Metric system have to exist.

The fact that the combat is challenging is a huge positive to me. Recent Zelda titles (and the few Zelda clones there are) have, like, mind-numbingly easy combat. Combat doesn't mean anything to me if it's not challenging. It becomes filler. All the cool items I have stop being cool items I want to use and just slower ways to get through the easy combat.

Give me tough combat where enemies take off multiple hearts, are super aggressive and I actually have to pay attention any day. Hell, I just beat the new Shantae and I have no idea what the death animation in that game looks like. I got 100% completion, too, which I almost never do. They give you healing spells, multiple types of healing items, etc. So if by some huge mistake you actually take enough damage that you're in danger of dying, you can just pause and refill it at a moment's notice.

Easy combat bums me out like nothing else. It's the antithesis of what combat symbolizes, in my eyes.

That would make sense, given their business address.

Also, the art style in this... I think I like it more than actual Zelda. It just has this super clean crisp POP to it. It looks like a cartoon, but then the camera moves so smoothly and it's clearly 3D. It's very satisfying to look at.

I'm European and the majority of people in my country consider Sunday to be the first day of the week. Even our calendars show Sunday as the first day of the week.

Most older countries, specially ones with historic ties to the roman empire or christianity, judaism and islamism considered Sunday to be the first day due to old traditions.

Even though ISO 8601 is now the norm that says Monday is the first day, it's a fairly recent norm that most don't follow anyway. For example ISO 8601 also dictates how dates should be written but each country has their own way, based on their language.

Are you able to back that up with some actual data? From what I know more people start their calendar week on Monday than any other day. Really doubt they would made it an ISO standard if what you are saying is true.

@johnymyko:Yeah its true that theres a lot of countries worldwide who adhere to the notion that sunday is the first day of the week. Heres a decent link about that.

Yeah, Americans also have ties to Christianity and Judaism so the same rules apply there also. But they're a little bit more extreme in a sense that they strictly don't want to adhere to the most commonly used forms of measurements.

Not that its bad or anything, it takes less than 10 minutes for everyone accustumed to meters to get used to inches and foot at school but its silly to use it in 99% of the cases because only a small range of cultures use it.

EDIT: Noticed a few spelling errors, fixed now.

@expensiveham: They made a standard to Monday because on modern times, where every country has Saturday and Sunday as non-working days, it made more sense to have Monday to be the first day of the week since it's the first working day. The week used to start on Sunday for religious reasons. There's a bunch of norms and standards that got updated to fit modern times, not just this situation. This is based on what I've learned during my life and some stuff I read in Portuguese, but I guess if you google it you can find it in English as well.

@dray2k: I guess they don't adhere to the norms the rest of the world use because they're so used to their own ways. I don't think they're all stubborn, it's just a mentality of "if it worked so far, why change?". But to be honest I really can't see how someone wouldn't want to use the metric system, it's so much more simple! Not using metric baffles me way more than this whole Sunday/Monday deal.

@colmarr: I'm from Portugal!

@drac96: I could be wrong, but I think "Day-Coo" would be でいく (De-I-Ku), making the proper pronunciation "Deh-Coo" でく (De-Ku). Either way, it's definitely not "Dee-Coo".

@danryckert With regards to the Deku Tree and its pronunciation, I try to think about where the game originally came from. With The Legend of Zelda technically being a Japanese franchise, I use that as my foundation for pronouncing anything. With that in mind, the hiragana character で is spelled "de" and pronounced "day",くis spelled ku and pronounced as such.

TL;DR - Deku -> でく -> Day-ku

@johnymyko: Eh, I didn't mean to imply that Americans are all stubborn, because these things are always enforced by the government and they're by no means respective to all the people living in the country.

Sorry if it read that way.

Maybe it interests you, theres actually institutions in the US who tries to redefine the Kilogram as a form measurement that should be in use worldwide. Its up to the government to decide though.
