This looks like a combination of lame, pandering humor and boring, repetitive gameplay. Also, frequent loading screens and annoying knockdown attacks.

@MetalGearFlaccid:

I guess you didn't watch Drawn Together, and you probably shouldn't if your mind can't handle this game. ;) Damn, now that you mention it, Twilight Sparkle killing zombies with a chainsaw .. I mean, the game looks slightly terrible but now I'm tempted to get it. :P

It's a shame that this doesn't look as good as I expected. Like Ryan and Patrick say it seems to be on the right track but it doesn't quite get there. Between Shadows of the Damned, that Kinect Baseball game, and this, Suda's most recent projects seem to fall a little short of reaching the level of quality he's been known for.

The zombies on treadmills made me laugh but eh.. not really my sort of game. Like Patrick I thought the music was good at first, but even in the quicklook you can see how annoying that must get after a couple of plays.

Did he just say what the dick? This isn't Bulletstorm!

Well, at least I didn't have high expectations for it (although maybe I would have had I remembered beforehand that it was a Suda51 game).

I liked No More Heroes the original and Desparate Struggle. The way I see it, Suda 51 is in that realm where the games are allowed to be graphically inferior, or the quality not be as solid as other games. If you are coming into this thinking it's a product of Kojima or Team Ico, then one can talk. It's not a good game, far from it. It's a Suda 51 game.

I really do not like this game. Humor isn't funny, camera is awful, combat is shallow, level design is boring.

But people will still claim it's a good game.

That's because not everyone shares the same opinion as you. Crazy world, isn't it?

I share the exact same opinion as him.

You're not "everyone", either, are you? I like the way this game looks.

I'm finding the game pretty fun. However not everyone is into Suda 51's games. Me? I'm enjoying the stupid humor and the style that it brings just as I have with The other Grasshopper games since Killer 7.

But I also take stuff at face value. In a world of Sequels and FPS games and everything being too cinematic. I'm finding this to be enjoyable, but hey, VIDEO GAMES right?

Exactly, regardless of how you feel about the humour or the somewhat thrown together gameplay, at least it's not trying to be a fucking Hollywood action movie like most games are striving towards these days.

So far I prefer Shadows of the Damned mainly because the protagonist of that game was awesome, as someone who finds Steve Blum fairly annoying he really out did himself there.

This looks like the kind of game I will gladly pick up in 6 months for cheap and have a good weekend with.

Suda is generally known for his style and tone, not "quality." His best games have all been "nearly there but not quite." Would be interesting to see what he could achieve with a western budget.

@rebgav: Yeah, I think you're right, but still, something seems to be a bit off about this one in a way I don't feel like most previous Suda games have been. It looks like it has some very repetitive moments and even in terms of style I'm not sure it entirely holds together.

It looks like it has personality and something going for it, this just doesn't feel quite as surreal or off the wall as the other stuff I've seen him come out with, cheerleader fighting zombie horde may not be exactly run of the mill, but it almost feels like it could have been thrown together by a businessman trying to work out "what the kids these days are into" (not that I'm saying that was the circumstance under which this was created) and nothing that came out of the protagonist's mouth seemed all that interesting.

Things I will likely never understand:

Ryan's obsession with menus an systems, and explaining menus and systems.

Ryan's (and Jeff's) unwillingness to explore combat systems past basic attacks when the game doesn't demand otherwise. Just because you can beat the game like that doesn't mean that there isn't more fun to be had by learning the intricacies of a combat system (even one as basic as Lollipop Chainsaw's). Mix it up!

Side note: I was relieved to find more Suda-isms in this game than what it initially let on. Don't know the extent of his involvement, but you can definitely tell.

@Gamer_152: On the other hand, it's a short score-attack game based on leaderboard competition which spends the entire first playthrough making you unlock your abilities and changes the makeup of the encounters and boss fights for each difficulty level, and makes you work to see all of the content and get the collectibles, none of which is really a populist direction. It's very much a niche title, so it's not surprising that other people look at it and can't understand what it is or who its for. There are undoubtedly people who shrug and shake their heads at SotD, NMH and Killer7 as well though, so it's kind of Suda's MO at this point.

The bolded really sticks out for quick looks of games they aren't completely hot on. Of course quick looks should never be taken as the ultimate demonstration of an experience of a game, but all too often that's how viewers respond. It's a shame but it's also not entirely GB's fault. Just something that viewers of quick looks need to keep in mind before they judge a product based on these videos.

I have a pretty big stack of games to finish up, so I'm going to wait a bit before picking this up. Maybe wait for a price drop. Looks pretty good though. It's no "No More Heroes 3", but it's close enough for now ;)

Still, a bit too offensively stupid. Bulletstorm and Duke Nukem Forever are still way worse, but still. With James Gunn involved, I was hoping this game would avoid the usual Suda 51-nonsense of "Let's just throw out as many cuss words as possible out there!". It's even worse because Juliet is a girl; she's clearly a sex object - way too many "jokes" are made at her expense. This game seems sexist as shit. It's bonkers that the game industry is freaking out right now about Crystal Dynamics saying that, "You should want to protect Lara" in the new Tomb Raider, or the whole "Feminist gets attacked by trolls because of her Kickstarter video thing" (google: Anita Sarkeesian, Kickstarter, Kotaku), and yet here's a game overtly being sexist, and it's not causing a stir whatsoever.

Internet, you be weird sometimes.

@vinsanityv22: The game definitely puts Juliet in a "Hard Candy" kind of position, while in the trailers they show her eating the lollipop and being sexy, and set her up as a sex icon in this silly game world. Though once the zombies and all that start looking at her that way, she immediately turns on them and cuts their heads off. Though yes this game is supremely stupid and arcade-y, and a lot like House of the Dead and Crazy Taxi.

Shadows of the Damned wasn't the best game, but its style made up for that. Besides it was still pretty solid in the gameplay department, add to that some interesting characters, some kind of story and humor.

Lollipop Chainsaw doesn't look at all fun to play. And everything else about it annoys me. When I heard about the game I was pessimistic, but knowing Grasshopper were making it I gave it the benefit of the doubt. Not doing anything for me.

I finished Lollipop in a single sitting this week and it certainly isn't the best made game, the combat is pretty clunky but holy moly never before have I experienced such weirdness and unabashed glee for stupdity. Highly entertaining for a few hours but yeah probably not worth buying new for most people, they really should have priced it at 40.

Shadows of the damned had an over sexualised male protagonist and was filled with dick jokes. When it comes to sexualised females too many people get their stuffy dry cunts all itchy and fel the need to bitch and moan about how women are treated. It's a game, shut the fuck up and other play it or don't. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean other people like the style and depiction of women as sex objects. This isn't porn, it isn't real.

Holy shit, I just found out Jimmy Urine of Mindless Self Indulgence composed the boss music and voiced Zed. That's fucking awesome! I've never played a Suda 51/Grasshopper game, but I think I have to give this one a shot based solely on that fact.
