Game is not very fun for the first half hour or so. Once you adjust and learn to play it as it is, rather than as a Souls game, it's actually extremely fun. The 1-on-1 fighting in it is very fun.

Enjoying this game due to the worthwhile attempt at storytelling and better defined tutorial and game mechanics. A more forgiving Souls alternative, with an art style I like better.

I'm a few hours in, loving this game a lot (I love the 3 souls games). The world doesn't feel as atmospheric (despite the atmospheric effects) as Souls and the enemies/world isn't as well designed (well maybe close to DS2 which for me was the weakest world design in a Souls game. Still having a ton of fun with this, the combat is great.

The BIG problem is it crashes every 20 minutes for me. They just released an update and told people to turn off "nvidia turbulence" for better stability. I did that and I still crash with the same error code. My PC is an up to date win8.1pro/4770k/titan which is normally rock solid and other people are complaining of crashing on the steam forums. I hope it gets fixed.

@ianh83: I been seeing a lot of people having crashes on PC. Seems to run fine on consoles though.

Im kinda intrigued, might check this out at some point.

Light Souls?

It's about time Souls was allowed to uplift the genre.

It falls short in those areas compared to those 3 yes, but think of how much better it is then most just by being that close in the first place! Glass-half full!

Wow it looks a lot rougher on xbox one. I have been playing it on ps4 and it looks not quite as good as what I see from the PC here (not 60 fps-ish like that) but it doesn't look nearly as reduced in quality or frame-rate as the xbox one version.

I'll probably play this game at some point.

Seek souls.. larger more powerful souls.

@vinny I think you have a bit of an audio popping problem going on early in the video.

Not sure if there is something up with the smoothness of the game either. It seems to stutter a bit. Whether that's the game or the video I do not know.

Watching Vinny play games of this type is always a delight and that Indiana Jones 2 reference was great. Kaslo and Zobek, birds of a feather.

Seeing what happens to your character after you beat the boss makes me wish someone restarted/re-imagined the Highlander franchise and made a kickass game about it.

I don't think I like those "shit on the camera lens" effects.

I'm interested at some point. I think I have some dlc to still finish in DS2, and I was still having a discouraging time with that Rot-lady .

Nice to see this getting a good reception despite what I was reading of the Dev's past effort. Nothing like improving and turning things around.

Sort of shocked as to how much worse the Xbox One version looks. It's not even the frame rate - perhaps it's their capture gear or something, but the lighting/color/effect detail seems vastly reduced.

It's almost like looking at the 360 version of an Xbox One game, if you get my meaning :(

But it has to be said, if you are running an older PC rig it's obviously not going to look as amazing as what has been shown here. But that is just how it is in PC gaming, you prolly still can make it look as good as the console version with a fairly dated rig though.

Man that looked gross on the XB1, and I'm not someone who goes crazy about framerate. Does the PS4 have severe framerate drops too?

@frankiebeanz: Yup the X1 version is 900p so that might be contributing to it having worse image quality.

Wow, The XboxOne version sure does look rough! Is the PS4 version any better ? It was to be expected, but it's still is a kinda disheartening to see how much better the PC versions already are compared to their console counterparts...I mean c'mon, it doesn't need to run 60fps on the new consoles, but it would be nice if it at least looked as good as the PC version and ran like 30fps...*sigh*

You can do the leap attack by combining Left and Right Trigger instead of the clunky as hell Forward + Right trigger. Much easier to do that consistently. Also the combo system is pretty damn nice.

Looks interesting, but I think I'll wait to see if it garners any hype. One of the main things that drew me to the Souls series was the lore, how things were presented, interesting locations etc. Similar gameplay alone won't do it for me.

But seriously, watching Vinny dodge those sword swipes gave me some Nam-esque flashbacks of Dark Souls 2.

It's weird. The mechanics are extremely similar to Demon's Souls/Dark Souls, but it makes me think more about a third-person Diablo III. I guess it's because my favorite thing about the Souls games is the presentation and world building rather than the moment to moment action (though I like that part too.) With all that said, I think I would still enjoy playing this game despite the seemingly generic feel of the world. In order for me to love it, however, it would need a world as interesting as that of Demon's Souls or Dark Souls.

Dark Souls has been kind of impenetrable for me. Might have to give this a go.

@ianh83: how are the boss designs specifically? Do they look interesting? Are there lots of humanoid bosses, or a good deal of monster types?

Seems like this ditches the long walks between dying to a boss and starting the battle again, which is Souls' deadly flaw imo, but also loses the compelling artwork and world building. Still, I was definitely compelled by that last boss fight, so I might try this out sometime.

The Quick Look actually sort of warmed me up to the game - it does look really nice on PC.

This is my first time looking at the game in 60fps and OMG, the slower, heavier animations really make this game look amazing. Kinda decided at the last minute to not pre-order this game but will certainly try to get this soon if impressions hold up after a month.

To put it in perspective; A $400 PC would not even be half of what is considered an acceptable rig but the consoles make it work, maybe even punch above their weight is some situations. Sure its not a 1:1 comparison but I think the old adage of "you get what you pay for" describes the situation well. Then again you can spend 2k on a sweet rig and still not get what you pay for either but that another story entirely. Its best not to look at one game and let it paint the whole picture for you just yet.

Concensus on this in reviews seems to be that it's an more accessible Dark Souls, but also doesn't offer much challenge.

As a Dark Souls fan, that doesn't sound too good. Because I don't play Dark Souls to play it once. If I'm not challenged, I won't want to go through it a second time. Yes, of course once you get good at Dark Souls you can go through it without dying much, but I still like that I have to pay attention to the game. If I mess up, I'll still die. I like it for that.

I still kind of want to play it though. A less good Dark Souls game can still be pretty damn good?
