Quick Look: Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash

I might still have to get this to have a couch multiplayer game over the holidays. I'd rather not spend 50 US dollars on this, but the Wii Mario Tennis game requires motion controls, and who wants to do that.

Just another filler game that assures the NX is coming soon. They just have a bunch of the b-teams working on crappy filler games like this and the animal crossing games, Twilight Princess remake and whatnot, while the A-teams are working on the real shit for the NX. Also i would not at all be surprised if Zelda Wii U is released for Wii U and NX just like Twilight Princess did.

It's a real shame to see just how bare-bones this game is.

This could have been great but instead it just makes me angry. And thirsty. Hopefully whoever at Nintendo that approved this pile gets a huge zit on picture day.

How long was this in development? It seems like a rush-job.

This should be a $10-15 downloadable game only. Makes you wonder, with how personable Nintendo is trying to be, how they let this obvious cheap money grab happen? It's just so disappointing I want some answers ;3;

I remember on the Gamecube version that Boo's shots curved in a 'tricky' way. My friend always picked him and I had a hell of a time anticipating his moves.

Why did Camelot even make this game? Maybe they are working on another secret project for the nx.

@ottoman673: I would have to challenge you on the Captain Toad assertion there friend. That was one of my top 10 games last year and I got more play out of it than most of the other 60 dollar titles I bought. Plus I think captain toad was 40?

Man what a shame about this game. I dug the earlier Mario Tennis games from the N64 original to Power Tennis, but this game feels so forced and lifeless. And those portraits of characters like Waluigi, those were portraits taken from Mario Party 6, a GC game from 2004! That's how rushed this release was! They couldn't put the effort to put fresh portraits of the cast and had to rehash old art.

This game looks about as disappointing as the recent 3DS Mario Golf game. Stripped down and somehow worse than previous generation games.

This is a bummer. I guess I can always just go back to Mario Tennis 64.

I love Mario Tennis. This looks like it's barely passable.

..and the tennis looks like it's a bit too fast paced for my liking, but I still feel the need to get this.

I wanted another Mario Strikers but if it'd end up being like this, then no thank you.

The GBC Mario Tennis had more content.

Man, either there were problems with this game, it was rushed for the holiday, or Nintendo doesn't care about the WiiU anymore. I mean, it is a sales failure but it has had a lot of good stuff.

Game looks fun, but yeah there is almost nothing there. Very disappointing.

Seriously though: This seems like some kind of ploy to throw people off the NX's trail. I don't want to get anyone's hopes up, but there has to be a true version of Mario Tennis coming soon right? I'd hate to think this was it...

This is really disappointing, and I didn't even care to begin with. Just sucks seeing releases like this.

That said, if this was 20 bucks, I'd be all over it.

Maybe this is the way of things now? Sports games just launch with no features, then the following year they start getting features? Can we expect Mario Tennis 17 next year with manager mode? (No.. No.)
Which makes this even weirder.. Only thing I can think of is that they shut down development early with limited features, switched to the NX and started working on a launch title for it... The NX is probably no more than two years out. I'm guessing Nintendo would want a stellar launch for the NX after the fairly middling launch of the Wii-U. Maybe they are corralling all their efforts into that? I don't know how much sway Nintendo has over this developer, but it's probably a fair amount?

Seems like this should have been priced at $30... What were they thinking? 'Hey guys, let's make the basic Mario Tennis game in the Mario Kart engine and shit it out the door.'

2015 hasn't been the best year for Nintendo first party games, has it?

@gaff:I don't know, I don't have a Wii U, but between Splatoon, Mario Maker and Yoshi's Wooly World (which the guys apparently totally forgot about?), that seems about as good of a lineup as you can get without a new proper Zelda or 3D Mario.

My only nit pick about Dan playing games in Quicklooks or whatnot, is that I wish he would pick a variety of characters. Isn't the point of these to show off as much of the game to us as possible? I wish when he had the choice, that he'd taken the opportunity to pick different people. This applies to fighting games too. He often just picks one character and never changes. I guess he's only playing to win most of the time, but I just wish he had bothered to pick more than just Waluigi even if the game isn't good.

It's sad that this isn't a better game. Tennis is a fun game, Mario Tennis have been great games in the past. This game should have been better.

So I'm just listening to the last Beastcast now and I had no idea that there was a whole Xenocross thing on there haha wow.
