3DS then, and just swap over once there's a price drop. Or play an older version of Tri on Wii, or PSP.

Yeah, solid quick look. I think this was the right way to present this complex of a game, with just enough pre-playing to have some idea what to do, but not enough so that you're taking the basics for granted.

If I had a WiiU, I'd be willing to give it a try, but why in the hell would I buy a WiiU?

Right, I could buy the 3DS version of a multiplayer heavy game that I can't even play online unless I have a Wii U. That's not happening.

Ditto for the Wii, the servers are going offline in April, and I don't have a PSP.

You can defend it all you want, but it absolutely silly that in order to play Monster Hunter proper I have to buy a Wii U, which I will never own. Nintendo already fooled me once with the Wii.

Strangely informative. Still have zero interest in Monster Hunter, but it's good to know what it's about. Shame Capcom didn't up-rez any textures though.

If Patrick sticks with this, I would not be adverse to watching a continuing series of his adventures in Monster Hunter.

Oh man! First off, thank you Patrick and Vinny, and good job showing/playing the game! All the memories of playing it on the Wii with my friends over Skype rushed back. I'd love to see what kind of nonsense a terrible trio of Patrick/Vinny/Brad (and maybe someone else?) could get up to in MH multiplayer.

It came out before those games and Demon's Souls was called a Monster Hunter like game in some of the forums I went to. Except in the Souls game, at least in Demon's Souls, your character didn't flex for 3 seconds when he took an herb.

to be fair, the lengthy animation for that (in dark souls its using your estus flask) is important to the gameplay to give healing a risk-reward type thing, and allow you to be interrupted.

I'm a huge fan of the D* Souls games and the monster hunter combat seems in line with that, but its never looked attractive in the say way. Maybe i need to give it a shot. Depending what platforms 4 comes to I'll probably try it out.

I think I read it'll be a 3DS exclusive which is a shame for me. I don't want to buy another system (even if it's a handheld) just to play a new Monster Hunter game.

Hey, I'm in the same boat pretty much. I'd also like to play this version, and also won't commit to WiiU right now. I'm just saying there are a lot of versions of the game available on the cheap if you're really eager to play it, because they've remade it many times now.

I'm hoping an E3 price drop on the WiiU will happen, that seems like a move they'll have to make unless they have a ton of mysterious unannounced games that will get to market before holiday time. If not, I can always say screw it and wait till Monster Hunter 4.

The 3DS demo of this turned me off completely.

Just curious, what about it in particular?

I've played a bit of MH Tri on the Wii, and even I thought the demo for Ultimate was... off putting. Mostly because they give you no introduction to the mechanics whatsoever, and start you off on a hunt that's decently far into the game itself, even if you choose the "easy" one.

Felt like I had no idea what I should be doing and the game had no intention of telling me. Don't think it even shows the controls at any point during the demo either.

Yeah, that demo wasn't good for learning the game. The real game has a better start but if you really want to get in to the game watch how other people play it.

I am still kind of annoyed you can't port over you standard Tri progress to the new one. Tacky.

Good thing I did not get too deep into it. The past versions in this series are way too disposable.

Cha - Cha cracks me up though.

I found this on GameFAQs:

A companion can now join you in online mode if there is an empty slot.

Interesting.

Any Monster Hunter-fans out there who could recommend which of the three PSP/Vita Monster Hunter games that I should get?

On PSN Sweden Monster Hunter Freedom, Monster Hunter Freedom 2 and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite are available for around $10 each. I guess there's no story arc across them, so should I go with the most recent, Freedom Unite, or am I better off starting with one of the earlier games?

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is the latest one of those three; that's what I have. I believe Freedom Unite has everything Freedom and Freedom 2 have, plus whatever new things they have in Unite. I could be wrong, it's been a while.

Thanks, as far as I can tell, Freedom Unite is Freedom 2 plus extra content, can't find any definite info on whether it includes the Freedom 1 content as well. I'll buy Freedom Unite, and hope I can find more info on if I should buy Freedom 1 as well.

Yeah, tell me about it. I'm pretty close to dropping down money for the Wii U and the game, but I have stuff to pay off, so that 's not really an option at the moment =(

I started Monster Hunter with Tri on the Wii. While it was VERY cumbersome to get started, I do like the game. I bought Ultimate on the 3DS and have the combo pack for the PSP...

But having said that, I'm disappointed in the game's clunky, "snap-to" camera. I know the MH faithful will call me a heretic for questioning what they have grown accustomed to, but as a player who is just coming in, the camera feels archaic and inappropriate. You can't adjust both the X- and Y-axis at the same time, like just about every other game with a moveable camera. It also has awkward, jarring "snap-to" positioning for the Y-axis.

I think the came could truly benefit from a lock-on feature, which would reduce the constant and annoying misses. Notice at the beginning of this video how often he is basically swatting at the air. Not fun, IMO.

Truth be told, the game could use some tightening up on both the camera and controls.

Have you tried the new lock on for the 3DS version? I find it super helpful. It isn't perfect because it doesn't lock on to the boss forever, but the camera snaps to his position which is worlds better than manual camera moving.

I hope so. I already bought a Wii U for this but it would be cool to see this on the PS3 and 360. Hell, I hope they release the PC version out to the west.

Except for the four Monster Hunter titles across the PS2 and PSP. There's precedence for this. I was just wondering if something was in the works.

@cincaid: I too am glad this comments section hasn't been flooded by hate comments to Patrick's inexperience with the game, but... come on!

I know it's a complex game, i know there's a lot to learn, but he has come to the point where he hunted an Arzuros and a Qurupeco and still can't see the commands laid out in plain view in the interface!

He didn't notice he could combine items directly from the combo list; he didn't notice he could compare current equipment with new one by pressing X twice (and actually preview the equipment pressing X once); he didn't notice that there are two sets of each armor type not just because there are elemental and defence differences but because one set is for melee and one for ranged and you can't equip some of the ranged sets if you dual blade!

That's not inexperience with the game; that's not looking at the DAMN SCREEN! Press L/R to change pages in item description, for monster's sake!

Freedom, Freedom 2 and Freedom Unite were not 1 & 2. Portable 3rd almost was, but not really. First True inter-"console) play is Tri Ultimate. Monster Hunter Frontier basically counts as the only cross-platform title (Windows PC and 360, though both are Microsoft platforms), but no one cares because they're never letting anyone but Far Eastern countries play it.
